The Wii is torturing the graphics whore inside of me.

I wouldn't mind seeing a game go for a flat shaded look with loads of polys. Could be interesting...

Make it a helo sim featuring big cities, with nunchuck used like in Heatseeker, plus wiimote for camera/cockpit clicking and I'm in. E.g. Gunship 2010.

Wii sucks, other than the lame graphic, we all know Nintendo couldn't make anything else other than Mario, Pokemon, etc. I am way out of the range of Nintendo's targeting audiance.

What the hell?...

Miyamoto already answered this thread a while ago.

If devs would put their efforts on the Wii, the console would have great games. Right now they seem to take the Wii exactly like they took the GBA and DS: the quick bucks backyard.

What is completely stupid is that they slowly kill their own market. They want to make a quick buck with barely no investment but this will only result in a console that won't be popular anymore and where only Nintendo games will sell.
After that they will blame Nintendo.

Publishers lack mid-term and long-term vision. They would make more money in the long run if they would invest more in the present Wii momentum.

Pat yourselves on the back nintendo...you did good. :)

I think this confirms ninty is not trying to appeal to kids.

It's nice that the Wii is so cheap, but I really expected something along a dual core 1,25 ghz processor coupled with a slightly more powerfull gpu.

One could argue that they could launch Wii 2 in 3 years at the same price with HD gfx and everything for the same price and one still wouldn't have paid more than you would for a PS3 now, but since the Wii is selling so well this won't happen soon. It's really a bit sad that we're stuck with those GC graphics for the next few years. Nintendo really screwed this up a bit

Yep.

The PS3 price will come down, but Wii will never be a next-gen console.

And Nintendo absolutely could've found a balance between essentially last-gen technology and the bleeding-edge hardware Microsoft and Sony chose. Even if they just went the Xbox1 route of using basically off-the-shelf PC components, they could've put something "Good Enough" together for $250 easily.

Well the wii price can come down too. It'll probably hit 99-150 before we know it, and regardless of its graphical prowess, we'll all buy one at that point.

I think above all, my gripe with the wii hardware is the lack of memory. It just doesn't make sense, and most gamers will have run out by the end of the year. The SD card setup seems sloppy, and they need to get on an HD attachment ASAP.

funny thing is everything you just wrote can easily be applied to Nintendo as well

Not really the difference is when nintendo makes something cheap and fun we get Wiisports when activision or ubisoft does it we get horrible ports. Most devs aren't even trying the same that nintendo is on Wii

Not if they were to make it as small as the Wii.

Least they can do is finally get their online service running after screwing us over in the hardware department.

I got my 360 after my Wii... the difference makes Nintendo look like amateurs, everything from graphics, to their online, demos, live arcade, the GUI.

Still love my Wii, but man, Nintendo is making out like bandits while the consumer gets sub-par product.

Small chassis = better games?

you have an interesting approach to game design

I meant to say that, were they going to use off-the-shelf parts, they wouldn't have been able to fit all into so small a place.

What difference does it make?

How does Wii being small make it better?

This is quite possibly the most eloquent attack on Nintendo I've ever laid eyes on.

I didn't say smaller=better: I said if (built with off-the-shelf parts) then Wii should have been bigger in order to be "good enough" and affordable. Either that, or it should have sold it at an enormous loss.

Yeah. Based on what Reggie said this week though, its part of their strategy. "Provide a new product that actually underperforms on an established industry metric for 'progress'". I think skimping on both CPU and GPU was pretty intentional.

I kinda wish my Wii could at least pump out some better graphics though too, but it won't. Regardless, it will have Mario, Metroid, and Zelda and I really love those franchises.

this looks amazing and it's the best looking wii game, even after all this time.

The eternal ***ing question that destroy my brain every single day is why, WHY only Nintendo & co. can output this graphics with the Wii ????

1) They know the hardware best
2) They actually give a shit about using it?
3) They're apparently using this game to write more detailed docs about the new ATI chip in the Wii - hopefully this helps all the clueless devs

When Nintendo puts out a game that stuns the naysayers visually, I wonder if that will force the 3rd parties to actually put some effort in...

Same question I've had since launch. Doesn't look to be answered until SMG. We'll see I guess.

edit: freakin mind readin, faster gaffers.

I've heard that 1000 times and I don't really doubt it, but what was the original source of this? Who said it first - like, IGN speculation, or Nintendo?

That just doesn't really seem like something they do. They are so damn protective of their assets, why would they use their strongest game to show other devs tips and tricks to make their games look like it (at least in overall quality, obviously they arent providing design docs)

Why yes, yes it is. And absolutely pointless too!

"I think Wii has shite graphics and it bugs me. Do you think so too and does it bug you?"

I mean, what're you trying to gain from this thread?

I think this question was answered a couple of posts back, and the answer is LAZINESS.

Tell me that Spiderman 3 image isn't real... wtf...
Anyhoo, I'm not bothered about the Wii as a platform in terms of graphics. The games that look good enough, look good enough and are easily worth consideration. The lazy, visually repugnant shit that's getting trotted out by some parties is obvious for what it is.

Generally speaking, I enjoy Wii quite a bit. However, I do find myself being bothered sometimes when looking at the latest Wii screens thrown up here on NeoGAF. I'm not expecting Mass Effect or Metal Gear Solid 4 or anything, but I, like most human beings, enjoy things that are aesthetically pleasing (we are talking about video games here). It's not what's under the Wii's hood that bothers me (though admittedly, it might start to get to me toward the end of this generation)--it's a matter of effort that developers put (or, in this case, don't put) into their work. See, I'm generally satisfied with the Wii's capabilities when they are actually taken advantage of; unfortunately, this seems to rarely happen. I mean, we’re half a year in and the results have been so inconsistent that even us message board nerds seem to be sketchy on what exactly the thing is capable of, graphics wise. I've posted examples below of what I'm visually content with on Wii, and I can only hope that this--and beyond this--is what the future generations of Wii games will look more like. Am I alone in being satisfied with visuals like this (assuming they become the norm)? To me, these games show that the little box has something worthwhile in there. Now lets put some effort into this, devs.

That's exactly the main point. Well said.

Maybe we should all shoot Nintendo an email with these requests. But then again, this is Nintendo. They'd probably slip us a fee for requesting such outrageous demands.

Probably because the Wii is a lot weaker than the other systems, so giving devs an idea on how to use the system would probably help with the "OMG WII SUCKS GRAPHICS HUR HUR" deal.

Looks like Konami is catching on quick, though.

Look... I've seen the SDK. Not the most recent one, mind you, but I've seen it. It was the exact same as the damn Gamecube docs, not outlining wtf devs can do with the extra juice and the extra pipes on Hollywood, aside from a few extra lines here and there. I don't know where that discussion was started (devs on Beyond3D?), to be honest, but I'd believe it. Nintendo is protective, but not to a ridiculous degree as you're stating (friendcodes notwithstanding). The point being, they've gotta update the docs to include more on the visual side of things. There haven't been many changes to the CPU (it's a 750 series PPC, just like the GC's, but at a higher clock and some extra instructions), but the GPU can handle more than Flipper ever could. By using examples from Mario, they're not exactly giving devs the tools to MAKE a game as good looking as Mario... just examples of how to do the visual tricks with the TEV, I'd presume. (i.e. "here's how to do an effective method of normal mapping on Hollywood", or "here's an effecient method of how to write a refraction shader to the TEV"). I'd simply expect these things over time. Sure, it's not as easy as XNA/DirectX, but it's certainly not the cluster**** given to devs by Sony/IBM for the Cell.

The Wii's size and shape are part of it's appeal to the mass-market, believe it or not. You would be suprised how much more positive the reaction is from non-core gamers when the see the wii just because of that fact. :)

Guys, Spiderman 3 has textures a little bit better than SM2 when near the ground, but when you reach the top of a very high building during the day, the textures go missing. The textures aren't gone for all of the game.

Oh, well that's okay then.

That screenshot is shocking, I'd rather have Turok style fogging than see a bunch of gouraud-shaded polys appear across the city to be honest.

EDIT: In fact... are they even gouraud shaded? On second look, they're just flat-shaded rectangles for buildings. That would look rubbish on an N64...
