The Witcher 3 to be most expensive Polish game; $15M dev. budget + $25M ad. budget

TW3 will cost at least 110 000 000 PLN (34 000 000 USD), out of that 40 000 000 PLN is for production and is paid by CDPR, and marketing budget (25 000 000 USD) will be paid by distributors and publishers in advance and deduced from the copies they sell.

Machine translation of the original text:

- Directly on the production of the game plan to spend at least 45 million zł. We also expect that the marketing budget is the third part of The Witcher around $ 25 million - says the head of CD Projekt.

This is a total of more than 110 million zł. No other game, which was produced and financed by the Polish company, did not cost so much.

Adam Kicinski emphasizes that while 40 million zł, which goes into production, I immediately fall in the cost of CD Projekt Red, the $ 25 million will be settled otherwise. The assumption is that the first lining them came distributors Witcher 3, and then collect them from the revenues of each copy sold. Global publisher of games is because CD Projekt.

- Marketing expenditure incurred by our distributors will not be our costs, but will be deducted from revenues due to us from the sale of the game - says Adam Kicinski.

Emphasizes that The Witcher 3 will be to bring the greatest profits in history. The President does not want to comment on the potential sale. It is still too early. The more that the developer has not chosen distributors. The first will be announced early in the third quarter. Its release is scheduled for 2014 years and it has to appear on the PC and the new consoles: Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

Oh ffs, it's only going to sell to hardcore gamers anyway, and they barely need to see advertising. Just spend more on the game. EA/Activision are fucking killing this industry with their AAA marketing budget bullshit..

Damn, they are going to make a great game with such a small budget. That's awesome. (I know those people work there for less money, but still)

What's up with CD Projekt RED showing up at Microsoft's conference and presenting the game, although they have a very anti-DRM stance. The Xbox One won't even function in Poland.

Something is rotten in the industry when you spend far more money on shit advertising than you do paying developers to make the game in the first place.

Advertising budgets mostly tend to be costlier than the product itself but it also shows what type of sales they are targeting. I think CDPR is going all out with The Witcher 3.

It's a big thing for Polish company - to be on main stage during E3.

Iwiński said that they don't really know how the DRM will work and that he's eager to find out himself.

The original article didn't mention publishers, only distributors. I remember one of the CEOs saying that they will self-publish all of their future titles (that was after the whole Namco battle)

Edit: Yup, here's the confirmation:

Adam Kiciński podkreśla, że o ile 40 mln zł, które idzie na produkcję, od razu wpadnie w koszty CD Projekt Red, to 25 mln USD będzie rozliczane inaczej. Założenie jest takie, że najpierw wyłożą je przyszli dystrybutorzy Wiedźmina 3, a następnie odbiorą je od przychodów z każdego sprzedanego egzemplarza. Światowym wydawcą gry jest bowiem CD Projekt.

Which basically says that CD Projekt will publish TW3 worldwide.

Well Witcher 2 sold about 2 million with very little marketing. That's quite a lot more than $45 million I think. So I'm sure they will at least be profitable. Hopefully very.

They will self publish only in Poland. They will start signing other publishers in Q3 2013.

There is no way CDPR are going to take any shortcuts in production, it's just not what they do.

Thats what happens when your studios is laser-focused on making a great game, without paying attention to forced multiplayer, filling experience bars, achievements and collect-a-ton bloat shit that is ruining western gaming.

Being in a cheap country also helps.

If you are anti-DRM go with PC then, seems to be their stance: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...-projekt-responds-to-xbox-one-policy-concerns

"We have no influence on the decisions of platform holders, neither Microsoft's or Sony's, but there is a platform where we can decide what we think works best for the gamers, and that's the PC."

The Witcher 3 will be the first game CD Projekt has simultaneously released on three platforms - The Witcher 2 appeared first on PC and then a year later on Xbox 360. "What it means for gamers is the previously mentioned freedom of choice," he said.

"I am sure that a lot of gamers will choose one of the consoles for its convenience and easiness of use - that's fine, and by doing so they will agree to whatever rules the platform holder will impose.

"What I can, however, guarantee here and now, is that if you want the 100 per cent DRM-free experience you will have it on the PC, the platform where we set the rules for our games. The Witcher 3 will be available 100 per cent DRM-free on our digital distribution platform GOG.com, and that's one thing I can confirm."

It's every industry. Add space is really fucking expensive, especially if you want during a NFL or FIFA game.

Well that depends. I think they made their money back pretty quickly with Witcher 2, but many of those sales after that were cheap Steam deals, so I don't think they made more than $45 million on Witcher 2.

Most likely, Microsoft paid them for their time at the conference.
I know that. But given all the talk about how they despise DRM it's just disappointing. They show up on stage at the most anti-consumer company in this industry. You would think they are going to ditch the development for this game because of their principles. But fuck principles, because money. Nothing but hot air form CDPR if you ask me.

Already do.

I real hope they aren't reaching too far with that budget. I understand the concept of marketing, but they are going to have to sell at least two million copies for all parties to profit in this scenario. It's reminding me of Tomb Raider sales "disappointment" all over again.

I hope its worth it.

I wonder if they will try and give Obama another copy of their game.

Yet when good games like Vanquish for example predictably bombs, pretty much everyone says it's due it being sent to die or in other words a lack marketing. You can't have it both ways.

Marketing is a necessary 'evil' to suceed in the AAA-games business whether you like it or not.

15million for development is actually much less than I had imagined. I had the impression that high end games were already north of 20m.

isn't this only next gen and pc?

I can't really see it do that much better than witcher 2. Internationally, pc might be the best selling one lol.

Makes me wonder why more publishers aren't looking to poland and countries like it to set up studios.
Various publishers have studios in Eastern Europe (assassin's creed vita was developed by Ubisoft Sophia), but you must also realize there aren't many easily available specialists here in Poland (and presumably in other countries in this region).

From what i heard EU will be hit with a massive deficiency in software engineers and other IT related fields.

Good News: Dev budgets are leveling off.

Bad News: Marketing budgets are ballooning to the point that they exceed dev budgets.

Ladies and gentleman, the state of the video game industry.

I'm glad to see this kind of investment going in to the Polish economy. Hopefully it'll stop the Poles coming to the UK and stealing our jobs.
Did I do that UKIP style?
