I'm glad to see that EMS stages have been improved but I'm worried about the first person perspective from the BMS stages, it looks way harder than the current format from TFFCC, I hope both styles can be found in game.

I really like the new EMS. Might actually be playable. I also like what they did with the slide triggers.

New BMS looks nauseating. And I've played DDR for years so I'm used to the top-down flow. It's that angled perspective that's killing me.

I agree.

God, I wish there was a Theatrhythm for everything I love. I want every game OST to be playable.

I agree.

Wow... I don't have anything to add. Yall took the words out of my mouth !

I'm still waiting for my Theatrhythm Kingdom Hearts, Square. Would pay lots of money for that. This looks fun so I might pick it up, even though my experience with Dragon Quest is very little outside of Rocket Slime.

I'm not a fan of Dragon Quest, but I might buy this anyway if it comes to the West.

I think the EMS change is good, but still not what I want (EBA-style controls), but definitely an improvement. The top-down change to BMS makes sense given how Dragon Quest displays combat, and I really like that there's apparently an effect to getting consecutive hits in specific lanes. As another poster mentioned, however, the apparent angle makes it harder, as does the fact that there's less screen space between the top and bottom compared to the left and right.

Not the orchestrated tracks?!?!?!

FUUUUUUUUUCK!

Using the game versions is definitely the way to go in order to avoid everything sounding samey. There will probably be orchestra stuff available, if not in the game then as DLC.

Just played through both songs in the demo for myself. The BMS stage actually felt easier in DQ than in FF. I think that's due to the notes falling vertically as opposed to horizontally. It was easier for my eyes to track.

Now I just need to decide which version to get; eShop or Retail. eShop version works out to $51.25 if the current yen to dollar conversion holds. But Play-Asia is only asking $49.99 for a copy. Once you add shipping your only paying an extra $14 for a physical copy.

And aren't there some first print bonuses? 3DS themes I think? Are those for all first print retail copies, like a pack-in? Or are they retailer exclusive? Would the eShop version include those bonuses?

I'd go with the physical just because of the DLC factor and space concerns.

By the way, in case it wasn't reported, all of the DLC for this game will be free.

Do the NES stages all use static images like that?

No animation at all? No walking around or whatnot?

The game has no 3D. Fuck off Square Enix

On one hand, I never used it in both TT because it was waaay too distracting and they might even be churning this out on the cheap. On the other, very shitty thing to do for people who enjoyed the 3D effect. With the n3DS out, the 30 fps vs 60 fps shouldn't even be a concern at this point.

Wow, this is great. TFFCC is probably the game where I've spent the most DLC money ever.

Theatrhythm FF runs at 60 fps with 3D enabled on 3DS, so the framerate shouldn't have been an issue regardless.

Oh, really? That tiny default track count is easier to swallow now.

Or would be, if it was ever coming out in North America. :p

But the EMS stages could only run in 30 fps with 3D on, which was probably why they added so little of them (and the old ones didn't even come back).

I think its for lowering used games sales. They are doing the same thing for Dragon Quest Heroes.

Can you explain how it would lower used game sales? Can you not just sell the cartridge to someone who then downloads all the free DLC to their system, or does the way DLC works on the 3DS prevent that somehow? I know it's tied to the system, but I don't think it would straight up prevent you from getting it with the same cart.

DLC in all 3DS games AFAIK can only be accessed through the respective games. Nintendo's "account system" is so rudimentary that it won't even let you buy free content from the eShop.

How does that translate to fewer used game sales? I'd think the investment in paid DLC would increase how attached someone is to a game, making paid DLC decrease used sales. It would surely help to prevent "lending" if DLC was free/available for a limited timespan, but sales are a more final thing that wouldn't be affected by that. Am I just braindead?

I think it's more as a thing of prolonging the game's life, like DQH. Less people will sell the game if there's still free (and good) content coming their way.

It's a good strategy, and always nice to see more games with free DLC.

That makes more sense. Like Monster Hunter. And by the time the DLC trickle ends, almost everyone who would buy the game has. Hyrule Warriors and FE:A have a similar (but paid) strategy.

Beyond that, the game is worthless used after 6 months. That's actually a really good overall strategy. Better than limited activation DRM for sure.

I hope this is released in the west, I'm still loving Theatrythym Final Fantasy and have dozens of songs to still download in the meantime. A Nintendo/ SE Theatrythym Zelda needs to happen tho.

Yeah I'd be all over a Kingdom Hearts version. Actually I still need to pick up curtain call.

Those BMS stages are madness.

I'm not sure if I'll like this one as much as FF. Dragon Quest has never been my thing.

Oh! Free DLC? That's amazing!

Recently got Curtain Call bundled with a CD and really enjoying it. Wasn't expecting nearly FF game and Advent Children to made it. Then the DLC eith other games; hoping Chrono Cross makes it.

*watches the BMS section* Oh god its like zooming triggers except it is on all the time and the perspective also makes it really hard to tell spacing between notes.

Remember would be importers if you're not playing the Japanese version on a Japanese 3DS (as in using regionthree instead) free DLC translates to no DLC as DLC availability is handled on an eShop country by country basis and there won't be anything on non-Japanese eShops for this title.

The DLC strategy here suggests they are going for an audience who is less interested in buying DLC or maybe these are actually removed from the main game so they can be drip fed out (I remember earlier screenshots implying the song count would nearer the first FF Theatrhythm game than Curtain Call).

DLC in all 3DS games AFAIK can only be accessed through the respective games. Nintendo's "account system" is so rudimentary that it won't even let you buy free content from the eShop.
That is more to do with the fact they didn't want people buying DLC for games they did not own which has got nothing to do with an account system.

I'm guessing this was complained about because on the Wii U the only way to buy DLC is in the eShop and every time you download a piece (IIRC even already purchased bit) you have to pass a screen saying "I own this game" even in cases when it should know (e.g. DL off the eShop).

Yuk. I consider myself decent at Curtain Call, getting SS on most Ultimate stages, but playing along with the BMS in this was annoying. Just a horrible perspective thing, makes it feel way harder than it should be. Do not like.

The EMS stage background videos were only recorded at 30 fps (which makes sense because FF7-13 are all <= 30 fps games) but the foreground overlay was still 60 fps in 2D and 3D..

The DQIII song must be from the SFC version, because it's not what I'm all nostalgic for in my childhood.

Hopefully there's NES/FC versions of songs too, especially that one awesome song in DQII.

All in all though, I thought it felt a bit weird. Mayve just takes getting used to.

Yeah, as a HUGE Theatrhythm fan (come participate in our weekly challenges in the OT!) I'm really, really disliking the BMS perspective.

I'm not sure if I prefer it or not, but it was the right thing to do. Does well to carve out an identity for itself, plus it reflects the nature of the series.

Real talk, I think the BMS phases are better 'feeling' than in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy.

It's really really cool but I had issues with it. I had a few times where I had no idea how quickly the notes were coming and missed them entirely.

That said, I'm excited for it. I'll wait to see if it's localized before importing. The localization news should be coming soon but with the free DLC, I'm wondering if they'll bother.

I like the BMS perspective. I didn't find it any more difficult than the other Theatrhythm games. Ultimate is hard (that's what's shown in the video), but it's not like it's easy in the other games.

I agree that you have slightly less time to react, but I don't think it's harder per se, just something you need to get used to. I personally liked the change in perspective. Something about it felt more tactile compared to TFF in my opinion.

Really hoping the final game has 3D. It makes the games more playable for me with the notes on a separate plane than the rest of the background.

By the way, that they added a simple mode is actually nice for people who can't do the slide notes, or for just practicing the note timings on the hard songs. I can definitely see myself using it for the latter.
