Here some of the features introduced by this gen(don't kill me if there's a mistake!):

-glassless 3d
-gyro(aiming)
-speaker on the gamepad
-rearpad
-touchpad on the gamepad
-lightbar on the gamepad
-jack on the gamepad
-additional buttons, levers etc like the xb1 pro controller.

what do you think it should be kept and what removed?
 
I really want the paddles on the Xbox elite controller to become standards for gamepads going forward. They're awesome.
 
Headphone jack being on the PS4 gamepad is a really great feature even if I rarely need to use it and it doesn't get enough props. Keep.
 
Kept:

Gyro aiming
Share button
Controller speaker (fuck the haters)
Controller headphone jack
Touchpad (more devs really need to take advantage of this. Killzone SF did it perfectly)

Left behind:
Light bar
 
Leave: Rear pad. At least keep it away from the fingers' resting or gripping areas. (I'm not talking about rear buttons or paddles)
 
Rest mode and spotify.

Also like how holding ths PS button on the pro has the pop up mini menu that doesnt take you out of the game.

And remove the lightbar or let us turn it off not just dim it.
 
Gyro aiming needs to be a thing in every controller going forward.

I absolutely detest using a stick for aiming. I'd prefer something closer to wiimote honestly, but saying that would give GAF a heart attacks.

The audio jacks on controllers are an obvious keep as well, no reason not to.

I'm not a fan of the current touchpad implementation, I think it could be good but would require more of a controller redesign (so that share/options aren't hobbled only to be replaced by the bad touchbad 'buttons' instead). I would like to see this worked on, and kept.

Most of the other shit this gen I'm totally fine without/actively don't like.
 
I really like the headphone jack on the controller and the touchpad on the DualShock 4, even when it's just mapped as two big buttons.

I really have always hated 3D, which is probably the most divisive tech of the last five years. I will not miss it and will be very glad when it's gone, but I do feel bad for the people who seem to really love it.

Edit: Oh God, and Rest Mode. I don't know how I ever lived without it. I feel like it's always been there even though I know it is a new feature. But not being able to suspend console games is a History I never want to revisit. This new luxury is now a vital necessity and gaming for me would be nearly impossible without it.

Yes, love the paddles.

My mates who bought elites don't have them on and I just want to take their elites back to the store for them and say they don't deserve one.

That and headphone jacks.
 
Headphone jack and Share button need to become industry standards going forward.

Also, I wouldn't really call it a gimmick, but now that Microsoft was able to get backwards compatibility running on XB1 I'd like console manufacturers to incorporate it in future consoles.

Yeah, I want a select and start button again.
Fuck the share and menu buttons.

That aside, fuck lights in my controllers, they are distracting (this goes both to the PS4 and Xbox, the minimal LED light for indicating the player number is fine, but the X1 logo and the PS4 colored light fucking suck)

This gimmick was on the 3DO controller also. I love it.

I use the share button to take pictures. Unlike movies, videogames have plenty memorable scenes, gorgeous scenery that to see it again you will probably have to replay it and end up asking yourself why I'm I doing this?
 
Share Play. Easily is my favourite feature this gen, it's so good.

I also like that both PS4 and Xbox One allow you to map custom buttons. I'd like to see this further fleshed out so that it only takes effect in the game you set it to and not while navigating menus, in the case of the PS4 at least it affects menu navigation on the OS level, which is a pain, not sure about on Xbox One. Also, on PS4, you can only have one custom button profile, I believe you can have multiple on Xbox One.

Share button is really simple and straightforward as well, with the touch pad in place, nothing is lost, so bring them both back.

Built in streaming capability is incredibly convenient and awesome, keep it.

My Kinect is still boxed, couldn't care less if they never brought it back.
 
I'd keep:
  • Headphone jack - Keep it but increase the sound quality please.
  • Rumble triggers - Lovely little touch, that can add to the immersion.
  • Share button - Not really a problem that it doesn't exist on the XB1 but it's much easier to take screenshots on the PS4 and WiiU thanks to it.
  • Paddles - More buttons / assignable buttons that allow to you keep your thumbs on the analogue sticks? Yes please.
  • WiiU's update check - Please MS and Sony bring this feature to your consoles as well. I don't want my console to be in a low power mode 24/7. But I don't mind if it checks once every 24h for updates and installs them. (PS3 did this as well.)
  • UHD-BD drive - One less box under the TV that I need to worry about.
  • Region free of the XB1 - Buy from every store, mix DLC and games from different regions.
  • Save share between digital and physical copies.

I'd remove:
  • Touchpad - It's mostly used as a glorified start button. I'd much rather have a physical button ( or two/four smaller ones) than one large touchpad.
  • Light bar - Useless for me, and it annoys me. I don't own a PSVR ( no longer, sold mine)'. Games that use it to indicate health (or anything else) please stop, I'm not looking at my controller when I play games I'm looking at my screen.
  • Controller speakers - Just stop with the low quality speakers in controllers already. They stick out painfully when you have a decent speaker set and can't be heard when you're using headphones.

Fix:
  • Auto trophy syncing - Sony it's idiotic that trophies still aren't instantly synced on PS4. Fix that this generation or the next.
  • USB headset support - MS why is the Xbox still not compatible with USB headset?

Gyro(aiming) = Removed. I think the level of precision to make gyro work for the majority of games would require a radically different controller. I'm not opposed to a radically different controller, but I would like the standard packed in the box controller to be as simple and straightforward of a controlling device as possible.

Speaker on the gamepad = Kept. Introduce better speakers in the next controller.

Rearpad = Removed. I'm not even sure what device would use it.

Touchpad on the gamepad = Kept. Upgrade to a touchscreen.

Lightbar on the gamepad = Kept.

Jack on the gamepad = Kept.

Additional buttons, levers etc like the xb1 pro controller. = Kept for Pro controller.

As someone who only plays on Xbox can someone tell me why the Share button is considered so good?

On Xbox I can double tap the Xbox button then hit Y for screenshot or X for video. It takes less than a second to do.

What does the Share button do exactly? Do you push the Share button and then it automatically takes a screenshot? Or a screenshot and a video at the same time?

Obviously one button press to perform the same action as three button presses is better but because I don't actually really play on Playstation I don't get the love for the button. I don't have the proper experience to make the right judgement or to understand the button, that's all I'm saying.

Like, what's puzzling me is, people aren't saying "I love the ability to take screenshots and videos, I want that to carry forward next gen". No, they're saying "The Share button is great and I want it to carry forward next gen".

What is the difference between the Share button and "taking screenshots and videos"?

Jacks on controllers (but now that USB-C is here I don't think this will last)
Gyros
Light bars (but make them turn-off-and-onable)
Speakers
Share button




Discard with disdain:

Touchpads
Non-removable rechargable batteries
Shit dpads
Controllers that need to be updated
 
Gyro can go. Even in games that it's "good" I hate it. I'm really good at Splatoon but I won't be caught dead using gyro. As long as it's optional I'll be good.
 
I'm really liking the HDMI pass through on the XONE, made things easier for the family, and let's me move from TV, to games, to Netflix without any effort. Haven't switched inputs since 2013.

Also, I know it's not popular, but I like kinect facial recognition. I have a large family, and its nice to have all the kids logged into their accounts automatically.
 
In a manner of graphical novelty, just fuckign stop with the chromatic abberation. It adds nothing, makes the IQ worse and hurts my eyes.

Double tap kinda sucks because the OS is not that responsive sometimes. More often than not it just minimizes the game and I have to go back into the game and try double-tapping again to get the guide and options to screenshot or record. It's even worse with the recessed guide button on the S controllers. I say this as a person who only turns on his PS4 to play Adventure Capitalist and plays everything else on Xbox One.

I can agree with these. I think headset jacks should be standard going forward on every console and rear input levers or buttons would be nice if they were included on future standard controllers.
 
Having to pay to play games online would be something nice to see killed swiftly and painfully, but that's obviously not going to happen now that it's been accepted by the mass market and normalized by both Microsoft and Sony alike.

Start button essentially being relabeled as an Options button, as well as a clickable touchpad standing in for the Select button, are things that can stay though.

You can actually customize the way it handles all of this. You can have it the same as the Xbox where you press the Share button and then press triangle to save the screen shot, or square to save a video clip of whatever length you set your clips to.

You can set it so a press of the button saves the screenshot without having to leave the action, you can also set it for a double press to take the screenshot just in case you don't wanna accidentally take unwanted screenshots.

You're able to double tap to tell the console to start recording a clip form that point, then double tap again when you want to stop the recording, again without having to leave the action.

On top of all this, the Share button handles all your other sharing, whether it's tweeting a screenshot or video clip or sharing it on facebook, or starting a stream, you press or hold the button (depending on your settings) to select what service you want to use and setup your stream. You can also start a share play session directly from the share button. It does a lot that I'm sure people aren't aware of.
 
The DS4 is the thing that bothers me most. For the DS5 Sony should get rid of the light bar, touchpad, and speaker. keep the headphone jack..that's about it and stick as much battery in it as possible.

the Xbox One controller for me is perfection. the battery life is amazing and it doesn't have all that stupid junk in it.

Hell, I'd just take letting me turn the light bar off. I don't know what Sony was thinking when they designed it. It's a cheap gimmick that only hurts the battery life.

On PS4 you can currently swap it out. We're probably a ways away from the all SSD future.
 
I'd like to keep the headphone jack on the controllers. Everything else can go.

Now add wireless charging to the controllers.

I'd also like to be able to disable buttons like the share button.

I agree. Truly one of the most cherished things from this generation for me as a 3D fan.

Everything that the Steam Controller introduced needs to become standard, by far the best and most versatile controller I have ever owned.
