A Pennsylvania judge threw the book at several protesters accused of rioting — by setting their bail at $1 million each — in wake of the police shooting of a knife-wielding Lancaster man

Lancaster police nabbed a dozen people and one juvenile for staging the riots around 3 a.m. Monday in clashes that culminated in police deploying tear gas at the crowd.
Twelve adults — Jamal Shariff Newman, 24; Barry Jones, 30; Frank Gaston, 43; Yoshua Dwayne Montague, 23; Matthew Modderman, 31; Talia Gessner, 18; Kathryn Patterson, 20; Taylor Enterline, 20; T-Jay Fry, 28; Dylan Davis, 28; Lee Alexander Wise, 29; Jessica Marie Lopez, 32 — face a slew of felony and misdemeanor charges, including arson, riot, institutional vandalism and criminal conspiracy.

A 16-year-old boy was also busted on riot, disorderly conduct, possession of instruments of crime, possession of a small amount of marijuana, propulsion of missiles onto a roadway and institutional vandalism.

Good. Send a message to all those who would be violent. Next up, harsh prison sentences, or even better,, community service that works on cleaning up areas hit by rioters with the guarantee that if they don't do the community service, they go to prison for years.

Taking the worst off the streets immediately is the best path to deescalation. It allows any truly peaceful protestors to do as they will while removing the agitators from the board.
Lancaster PA is Amish country. The local prosecutors will know that they need to keep peace alive and at the forefront of people's minds when thinking of Lancaster. Therefore, I predict NO MERCY, NO KID GLOVES, FULL PENALTIES for these fucks.

If Portland did this to 10 rioters on day one, then the last 101 or whatever days we are up to would not have happened.

Everyone knows this. These riots are dependent on a law enforcement apparatus that supports them.

Don't you know that putting people in prison might hurt their feelings? Its just property they are destroying. Property is nothing compared to hurt feelings!

Amazingly effective and fair at stopping riots/violence but not stifling TRUE peaceful protest. Excellent job, Lancaster.

Can someone explain to me how the bail system works in the US? I'm from England so I've never quite been sure if it is different to what we have over here.

No way this will be allowed to stand.
Why? What is the issue? The amount of bail?

These people are known to go out and just re-offend immediately, there is plenty of evidence of that,
so a bail that is so high it stops them from going out and immeiately re-offend makes perfect sense.

Also, sets an example for others that "don't start shit if you are not willing to take the consequences."

Another brilliant post from Nobody_Important Nobody_Important

It will stand - they are domestic terrorists and this is part of the county with some common sense.

However, even if they get another bail hearing and the judge lowers their bail, they will still spend at least a week behind bars, which is more than enough time to send a message and stop the rioting.

This judge is a hero.

Pathetic that this was his only takeaway. But he knows what he's doing, maybe.
