This year alone the Wii U got many of the best games EVER in their respective genres

NeoGAF acknowledges that the Wii U had a fantastic year, but I believe it deserves even more recognition when you actually think about it. The Wii U didn't merely have a year with good exclusive games; it had a year where its best games, can be considered the best ever in their respective genres.

I thought about this when I was remembering the threads I've made this year since I got a Wii U. I said that Tropical Freeze was the best 2D platformer of all time, Mario Kart 8 is easily the best Kart racing game I've played, and having just finished Bayonetta 2 for the second time, this is the greatest character action game ever. The picture above also includes Shovel Knight, which I haven't played yet but will soon, but based on the kind of praise I've seen, this could be considered the top indie game out there.

Many platforms have had damn good years, but it's hard to see a year where you are getting simply the best of the best and in a variety of genres/styles/gameplay/etc. Let's not forget about Smash, which will probably be the cherry on top of the cake.

In short, Wii U has an excellent library that doesn't include merely good games like other platforms; it has what can be considered the best of the best.

Discuss.

Agreed. I feel the best games are on wii u. Some of the best games, and they are all pretty much exclusives. It's hit after hit

I think Mario Kart 7 is better than 8 TBH. I think it has much better balance and more tame bumping. 8 is 2nd in the series for me though, especially with the DLC.

Shovel Knight is legit though.

But the WiiU isn't gonna get Crash Team Racing!

Anyway, yeah the end of this year and the beggining of the next is finally Nintendo getting shit done software-wise.

I feel like I've been seeing these threads for a while, about Wii U being the best and all...

Also "Indie game" is not a genre.

Agreed. Enjoyed MK7 far more, personally.

Personally prefer last year's output for the Wii U, but Tropical Freeze is uncontested. There's still Smash and Captain Toad coming out, too.

Bayonetta, sure.
Mario Kart, Yeah I'd say so.

Donkey Kong? No. It's great, but it's not even the best of the modern 2D Platformer resurgence (That's Rayman Origins.)

Shovel Knight is fantastic but Indie isn't a genre. (Although I'll say it's closer to best 2D platformer than Tropical Freeze is. :p)

One of these things is not like the others.

Also Pikmin 3 is great and if there's ever a WiiU thread that does not acknowledge how great it is I will be there to put things right. Short though. What genre would it be?

Mario Kart 8 does a suplex on concrete to CTR. I love kart games, and nothing holds to 8's audiovisual presentation and DAT gameplay.

I don't know about this. Yeah 7 was good but the game felt uninspired and the hang gliding and underwater sections did little to remedy that. In a way, MK8 is a much better version of 7

Wow, I did not even know this opinion existed. Never heard anyone put MK7 above MK8, but fair enough I suppose. Imo MK7 is the worst in the series and doesn't even come close to MK DS.

Captain Toad could be gunning for that adventure-puzzle game spot, too. Truly a magnificent year for quality Nintendo games, easily the best one that I can remember.

EDIT
Is Hyrule Warriors the best musou? The bar seems pretty low in that genre.

From my very limited experience with the series: yes. The amount of love and fanservice packed into the game outweigh the technical deficiencies (still pretty polished though, for a Warriors game anyway).

With regards to Tropical Freeze and Bayonetta I completely agree. Tropical Freeze is the best 2D platformer since Super Mario Bros 3. It's also the best looking game on the system, aesthetic wise. The levels are nothing short of gorgeous and they're a blast to speed run over and over. Such a step up over the bland DKCR. And let's not forget David Wise's OST.

And I think Bayonetta 2 speaks for itself.

I feel like none of the games are the best in their genre. Bayonetta 2 is close, but it doesn't touch Ninja Gaiden Black. The rest... nah (and I loved DKC)

Shovel Knight is just an above average 2D action game. Game is way overhyped around these parts.

Since it seems it doesn't have to be this year

Let's not forget Mario 3d world, wind waker HD, pikmin 3, hyrule warriors

Not interested in Baronetta. I've got Donkey Kong. It's okay.

Mario Kart 8 is stella. It's really close between that and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. I've got the latter on PC and WiiU and 60fps @ 1080p with better textures on the PC version is very hard to beat.

LOL at Shovel Knight. The OP is really reaching there.

Preach the truth brother.

Tropical Freeze - Greatest 2D platformed of all time

Mario Kart 8 - Greatest kart racer of all time

Bayonetta 2 - Greatest character action game of all time.

I said DAMN. Hats off to you Nintendo

I pretty much agree with 1, 2 and 3. But indie isn't a genre, and Shovel Knight isn't the best action-platformer. Megaman probably still takes that cake.

Regardless, yes Wii U has a pretty robust library of best-in-class games in their particular genre, minus shooters, of course.

DKC and Shovel Knight are in the same genre more or less. So which one do you think is better?

Shovel Knight isn't really meaningful, when it launched on a bunch of platforms, is it? Maybe not a lot, but I'm pretty sure it's on 3DS and PC at least.

As for particulars, I could give Mario Kart 8 best MK maybe... but it feels a little lacking without battle maps, and insulting with the DLC slots autoupdated into your game. No, I don't want you to shove in my face that I didn't buy that. Though I get that that advertising is more important than my enjoyment of the game, and I guess it's whatever. Actually can I delete that update? <.< Best racing game for me is going to be F-Zero GX though, and I can't imagine a Mario Kart changing that (Edit: Just noticed that you mean KART racing. Understandable). I haven't played the latest Sonic racing game, but I've heard good things about it too. Might be up there with MK8.

DK:TF is amazing. I'd say it's a contender. I personally think of SMW and maybe SMB3 in slightly higher regard as far as 2D platformers.

I haven't played Bayo, but DMC3 and NG (Xbox) are tough competition. I could see B2 taking it.

All I can remember about MK7 is that I really liked it. Thats probably cuz i played the whole game in 1 session then never touched it again.

But I remember it being fun.

MK8 is definitely my favorite. 2nd is tied with DS and Double Dash for me, then SNES MK

I know indie is not a genre. I should clarify that I meant shovel knight could be considered the best of those new "old-school" aesthetics, 8-bit era kind of games.

Is this a troll thread? Not even close to "greatest of all time". Better than the competition, sure but nothing else.

Just had this debate with a certain "penguin". MK7 is the better balanced game by far but it's impossible to go back to 7 after playing 8. How does one reconcile this paradox?

I think even with its core issues, and they're glaring issues, MK8 is a better game than MK7 but MK7 was a more polished game if that makes any sense.

Oddly, I feel exactly the same way about DKCR and DKCR:TF. I think DKCR was the more polished experience even if TF is technically better.

Agree. This is the highest example of quality over quantity. Sure the wait between each title release is extremely long (4 MONTHS from MK8 to Hyrule Warriors for example and zero retail releases in between) but at the end it's definitely more than worth it. Especially if you have a another console to complement it. You play 3rd party stuff on either your PC/PS4/X1 and Wii U for their top notch exclusives. More than excellent mix IMO. Here's to an awesome 2015 for Wii U. Wich it looks it'll have less game droughts than 2014 so that's great.

I'd say you're right about Rayman Origins for sure and I don't even have to play TF to know that. Hell, even Legends couldn't hold up to Origins.

But as far as Bayonetta goes, I'd have a hard time believing that, as Bayonetta wasn't the best character action game in the first place. I'm sure, depending on preferences, it would take a hell of a lot to dethrone the other games people hold as the champion (including: DMC3, NG:B/NG:S, MGR:R, etc.).

Mario Kart 8 is my favorite game on the system. It is just perfect in every way - and the DLC only made it even better. I really, really love that game

You haven't even played Shovel Knight but list as possibly best "indie" game of all time?

lol.

Edit: But yo, my short time with Bayo 2 actual put it in the running for my favorite Character-Action of all time.

How does Bayo 2 compare to Ninja Gaiden?

That's my bar for greatest action game ever, and Bayo (as great as it was in its own right) fell well short.

I heartily endorse this thread. I have been gobsmacked by each of the games in OP. For me personally, the Wii U has been utterly amazing.

Also, OP forgot 3D World which is the best 3D platformer of all time. Technically last year, but it was the very tail end.

Come at me.
