PSU: What is the primary advantage with the technologies for next-gen? Are there differences between the 360 and PS3 that you found aided you in the game?

Valve: We defintiely feel next-gen technology aided truly in our development process. You know---you have complexer AI, you have more characters to work with, an enhanced ability to work with the animations on a higher scale--all that stuff. The only difference between the 360 and PS3--which both as a collective helped us develop The Orange Box is definitely there. For the 360 version of the game, we can probably say we are using around 93-94% of the console's power given our current optimization. With the PS3, we can't exactly say what power cap we reached, since no developer really knows where the boundary is for the PS3. We can tell you that in terms of the whole game together on the PS3, we are not even using the SPU's and it is purely built on the graphics card and Cell. We're still optimizing for PS3 more because we can, which can explain the slight delay to you. But no worries, everything is going smoothly to put down any rumors.

Rest of the article can be found here:

So devs are already hitting the ceiling of what the 360 is capable of. That's too bad, I'm sorry they can't make their true visions come to life on it.

y'all should be ashamed

That's ker-azy!

There is still 6% untapped power left. Who knows what can be squeezed out of there.

So basically, the PS3's power is limitless?

It'll be very interesting to see the kinds of games PS3 devs will make.

GenericPseudonym said:
What does that even mean? There are far, far better looking 360 games than Half-Life 2, is that 6% just so much more powerful?

You can max out the power of the 360 by just giving it a really complicated math equation to solve. Graphical fidelity is NOT the litmus test for how much power you use. It's very, very easy to waste clock cycles.

So essentially, they're saying the Xbox 360 was pushed to 94% of it's capacity, even though no one has maxxed it yet, but the PS3 can't be defined, because no one has maxxed it yet?

interesting...I can't decide which version of this to get.

if the PS3 and 360 versions are 60fps, that'll probably rule out the PC version...

This is probably the most informative part of that quote.

We can tell you that in terms of the whole game together on the PS3, we are not even using the SPU's and it is purely built on the graphics card and Cell.

Shit, well I can put out a big sigh of relief for the PS3 version. :D
It would be nice if they used the SPUs though... I mean, Half-Life 2 was all about 'teh physix!' and here they have a processor to do physics stuff with... right?
Anyway, if they are actually optimizing the PS3 version and it's just as good as any other version of the game... DAY ONE PURCHASE.

apparently gabe hasn't seen gears of war.. or bioshock.. or resident evil 5, or the other 100 games that look way better then hl2.

Hl2 looks like an amazing set mind you, but graphics aren't the reason i'm impressed.

jesus. it's almost like they're proud of their negligence. i guess that settles which version to buy.

What an odd statement. I can see saying 95% or 90%, but 93 to 94%? They really must have the boundaries of the 360 worked out.

Not using any of the SPUs? For fuck's sake...

"Guys, what are those things?"

*looks through design documents*

"According to Sony, these are ES-PEE-USE."

*scratches head*

"Oh, sounds dumb. Shit, why is Half-Life 2 running at 10fps on PS3! Stupid Sony and their stupid designs!"

I love how they just decide what percentage of power their game is using.

oh shit this is defiantly 92.6%!

Maybe they know.

Inefficient shitty code can still utilize a CPU's power 100%

Exactly. This doesn't mean HL2 should represent the 94th percentile of visually stunning games or anything.

To be perfectly honest, if they're not using the SPUs, then I'd be pretty worried about the PS3 version. Inferior port and all of that. As we've seen too many times, if a game doesn't make PROPER use of the PS3 architecture (i.e. using the SPUs) then it ends off worse than the 360 version.

0% of the power confirmed.

Gabe=The new Mark Rein confirmed.

Double speak ftw.

Backfire total.

God said let there be an advance console - with blazingly fast processors, bluray, unworldly graphics, a heart of gold, and a sleek almost senusal exterior

You guys do realize that the PC gets the superior version, right? It's not like either the 360 or the PS3 is the lead platform here.

It's not just that they should be ashamed of underutilizing the PS3.

If a PC game from 2004 nearly maxes out the 360, he's either an idiot or that's pathetic.

Valve? How bout being a little bit more specific PSU. Also isn't EA handling the PS3 version and Valve is only working on the 360 in house?

Well I can guarantee you the Orange Box will use well over 283% of my PC's power to run at a steady framerate.
