The random battles of the older games make them pretty unplayable today in my opinion. It’s so archaic. If Square ever updates FF6 with a more modern system, I would be all over it.

Better yet. Maybe they can integrate both options into a single game?

I live for the battle systems of the older games, and absolutely hate the modern ones. It's just more fun the old way. The last FF I bought was XII, and I vowed that I wouldn't buy another RPG without extensive research. Such was my disappointment with XII, and it was mostly due to the battle system.

Final Fantasy X was the last good one. It's not the best ever imo, but it's the last time the series was any good. In my view..

Unironically: yass slay queen.

FFX is unforgettable. The pilgrimage through Spira is excellently paced. People dock points for the linearity, but there's so many optional gameplay & story tidbits sprinkled along the road that I never minded it went in one direction.

As someone who has beaten I, IV, VI, VII, VIII, and IX, I also don't think the world map added much to those games. The exception to this is FFVI's second half where exploring the world map as Celes was pretty cool and couldn't have been done in X's linear structure.

Final Fantasy X is a fantastic game on all fronts and is one of the very best entries in the series. It was very well-received back in the day as well, so why there is this sudden backlash is something I cannot understand.

Final Fantasy VII is a good, but also extremely overrated game. I'd take X over VII any day of the week. I prefer XII over both.

I started with 7 but replayed 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 on Switch last year and tbh I came away liking 12 the most now (unpopular opinion I know). Its aged extremely well (was almost a bit ahead of its time in some ways) plus its a really good remaster.

FFX is my favorite FF so I agree with this list. FFVII is a close second. Anyone who would place FFXIII or FFXV on their list is just wrong ...or they have a different opinion than I.

I prefer FFVII among all of them but FFX's ending is the most emotional. My mind wasn't ready for that 18 years ago and probably never will be.

FF X deserves a remake that expands on the story a la FFVIIR.

Only took 20 years and 4 remasters for FFX to be considered the best FF.

For me it is between 9 and 10. 10 is more memorable for the Journey and 9 is more memorable for being a Pantonime Medieval type of affair with great characters and villian.

I see FF7 as the Shadow the Hedgehog of Final Fantasy, trying to be "edgy" and "hip" which for some of the game was pretty cool but then I hated the way they portrayed the Adventure from Eco Warriors to stopping a Meteor because the Antagonist thinks he is the son of an Alien.

i 100% agree

however, i do believe going linear was a step in the wrong direction, which continued on in XIII but started to get back on track with XV (yes i know the game has problems and the open world tends to be a bit empty but still, it wasnt completely linear and thus a step back into the right direction for me). im hoping VIIR will continue the trend and we will see a much more open world, especially after leaving midgar of course.

all that being said, i still dont understand the push for a more linear experience, like that was one of the reasons i loved rps's to begin with, an open world you could roam around in. then they just shit can it and say, no linear is what they really want...? just never made much sense to me. then again, a lot of what SE did from FFX through FFXIV didnt make much sense to me so

but yes, if youre going to do a linear rpg, take notes from ffx bc that game nailed it beautifully.

Wow wow wow, wait a minute they also included the spinoffs for the poll? then nvm I take back what I said I don't agree with the top 10, FFTactics should be top 3 at least it's like the best story written for a FF, it's like the game version of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace or even fking G.R.R Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire and it's also one of the best TRPGs ever made, wtf japan? you guys almost convinced me this time, but Tactics not even in the top 10 pff.
