Top 10 Worst E3 trends from 1997 Computer Gaming World

With a few text tweaks basically the only things that don't hold up are the bimbo one (and that's more because female protagonists barely exist in the kind of games that go to E3 now) and the 3D card one. Also lol 50-75 MB installs.

I remember when Fallout 2 humongous installation scares me with it's 600MB size back when it released.

Lack of innovation compared to other genres. RTS games fit with the graphics of the era pretty well. But it's strange EA can't even manage to bring their C&C project to life and Blizzard doesn't seem too eager to do Warcraft 4 anytime soon. It's like the genre is stuck in a time warp, with only the Toal War games really trying anything new.

To be fair, Blizzard still has StarCraft II. They released an expanion not even a year ago and another one is coming in a year or two.

While not as popular as LoL or Dota2, its still one of the biggest competitive games.

Regarding that 50-75Mb installs, I remember when installing Age of Empires II would eat up all my HDD lol

Of course to install The Conquerors expansion pack I had to buy a new HDD lol

Old video game magazine articles that are relevant today?

B-b-but why are we only now talking about female characters guys? No-one ever had a problem with it before

LOL that jumped out at me, too. And it felt especially ironic considering that their taking a different approach with the reboot opened up a completely different (and far more facepalm inducing) can of worms.

At any rate, it's nice that I haven't encountered anything nearly as bad as point 4 when it comes to game compatibility on PC. Number 5 (bad writing) is especially depressing, though, seeing how much better everything else about the presentation has gotten--and how much more money is being dumped into these games.

Shout out to TEN on that Online Gaming page. I remember throwing down some Duke3D on TEN. I think they eventually became POGO Games... how sad.

#4 is basically a non-factor these days. Everything else with some light modification applies today as a it did back then.

That's incredible. It also shows how the overloaded genres can wildly change. I wonder what will be next?

Uh there are plenty of girls who liked the old Tomb Raider games.

Yes. Lara has even been called a feminist icon in some quarters (even though she is loathed in others). I can see what aspects of her that people would like, while seeing the aspects of her that people wouldn't. She's kind of like the Spice Girls. Singing about 'Girl Power' while dancing provocatively in skimpy outfits and being forced into roles you see regularly in porn movies.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
Yeah. We predicted all of this long ago
None of it was unstoppable or irreversible, but now it's practically too late. Net Neutrality, micro transactions, most all of it. At least I'm still having fun.

I remember getting my first 1gb drive back in 1999 and man was it amazing. "I'll never use up this much space" I said as my 12 year old self booted up his 799 emachine

I had a 1.2GB HDD at the time! So a 75MB install was something cringe worthy back then to me! Oh and 1MB of VRAM!

But yes... That article seems spot on minus the RTS overload.

Like many others in this thread have already said, I wouldn't mind if RTS' came back from the dead.

50-75 MB installs? Outrageous!
Do you guys realize that the average HDD back then was 2-3GBs and the prices were much higher, right?

50-75MBs was a lot of space, similar to a 25-40GBs installation nowdays, except the HDD cost much more.

This reminds me of an old NGC review of Red Faction 2 in 2002 where they complained everything was brown.

The only thing about E3 that has changed is the money put into it, pretty much.

Yeah, I remember when me and my dad went to pick up Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight from EB. He didn't think he was going to have enough space for it and other things. I think it was a 75MB install.
