In 1990, another classic Arnold science fiction film was unleashed upon the world. Like Terminator and Predator before it, Total Recall is one Arnold film that can genuinely be called a true classic.
Paul Verhoeven directed this as a followup to his classic, Robocop. He brings his satiric edge and love of ultra violence. Him teaming up with Arnold is a match made in heaven.

Based upon the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," and adapted by Ronald Shusett, Dan O'Bannon, Gary Goldman, and Jon Povil, the film tells of a regular joe worker Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) that dreams of escaping his humdrum normal life.

Somehow, Arnold thinks he doesn't get enough excitement at home with Sharon Stone.

He goes to Rekall, a company that specializes in false memories. Custom designed memories implanted in your brain. It can achieve anything that you want. Be a secret agent? Sure. Dump Sharon Stone for a hot brunette?

Check. But sorry, Arnold. Rachel is hot, but she is a downgrade from Sharon Stone.

How about being an action hero set loose on the Mars colony bent on overthrowing the evil corporation and setting the people free?Or all of the above!

They can remember it for you wholesale!

The future presented in the world is still fascinating.

The future of public transportation.

The future of the TSA right here.

But things aren't going so well for Quaid. Now everyone wants him dead, including his wife. And now there is a group of bad guys chasing him down, somehow able to track his every move.

You know there is trouble if Michael Ironside is after you. Still one of the most badass, underrated actors ever.

Soon, Quaid finds out from a message from himself (WTF), why they can track him. There is a tracking device in his skull, and there is only one way to get it out and lose his pursuers.

Does anyone else get a headache while watching this scene?

After eluding them, there is only one option left. He has to get his ass to Mars.
But if you are a wanted man, and spending two weeks on Mars, how do you get past security?
11.gif

Still awesome.

Of course, we also learn of Mars and its wonderful atmosphere.

So that is why the windows are never opened.

Soon, Quaid has to question his reality. Is this real, or is it an elaborate fantasy implanted by Rekall? Quaid delves deeper into the mystery.
Falling into the underground Mars resistance movement, there are many pleasures to be found.

Slightly NSFW: You wish you had three hands.

And some not so pretty pleasures too:
totalrecall07.jpg

QUAID!

All of it leads to the man behind the oppression on Mars. Ronny Cox, a staple of awesome 80s films. (Beverly Hills Cop, Robocop).
total-recall.jpg

Let me show you something…

One thing leads to another. Quaid still must question his own reality.
total_recall_aotd_main.jpg

And they will forget it for you wholesale, too.

Escaping, there is only one course of action. And that is action that only Arnold can deliver.

See you at the party, Richter!

It seems that the corporation has been hiding the fact that they could in fact create a breathable atmosphere on Mars, but would rather bleed the residents dry instead of giving them free air. But Quaid will have none of that. Of course, venturing outside before the atmosphere is working is not a good idea either.
totalrecall09.jpg

Ronny Cox has looked better.
total_recall_remake.jpg

So has Arnold.

The beauty of the film is that it ends ambiguously. Was the entire film an elaborately created fantasy that played out in Quaid's mind, or was it reality?

Truly one of the best science fiction films of the last thirty years, and in the top 5 of Arnold's filmography. It also has a spectacular soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith.

Total Recall Theme

More Arnold love:
Conan The Barbarian
Commando
Predator

1) Best Schwarzenegger movie.

2) Much better than alleged classics with similar themes.

3) Functions as a critique of the action film genre.

4) No crying about the poster. IIRC, this was one of the first giant blue head posters.
in b4 some wiseass posts a picture of Fantastic Planet.

5) Verhoeven is a god.

I got the bluray for christmas... not a very good transfer but it is one of the best sci-fi movies I have ever seen. I love it. It was definitely Arnold at his best. The one liners always have me laughing like an idiot.

I don't know... was it really that ambiguous that it may have been an elaborate fantasy? There were hints at it, but I never thought it would be a real possibility.

6) Has a chick with three tits.

From what I remember of my last sitting it kind of felt like it was a fantasy...

Not ambiguous at all, IMO.

There are enough clues to tell you that Quaid is fried.

The guy from Rekall came to him in the hotel and told him it was actually just a fantasy. And then Arnold shot him. They tease it halfway through the movie that it might actually be fake.

Of course, since this is based on Philip K. Dick, the plot is paranoid as all hell.

But it's a Verhoeven film. The outrageousness of the entire film is standard fare. :lol

But what about the sweating? :lol

Seriously? Where?

Where is the Running Man thread btw. I loved that movie. It's probably one of the most rewatchable Arnold flicks from the 80s. Great critique on reality television too before there was reality television.

Also the technician's incredulous line in the begninning about "blue skies on Mars" and the fade-to-white at the end.

That is tomorrow. I debated about doing a Running Man thread first, since it predates Total Recall, but there were more requests for a Total Recall thread.

Saw this about a month ago... one of the funniest movies I have seen in a while. I laughed the entire time.

Screw you Benny!!!!

Total recall is a fantastic movie. I'm so happy the plans for the remake seem to have been put off.

Plans for a remake? This is surely blasphemy. I cannot think of a greater crime against humanity.

Up until Arnie punches someone is simply amazing sci-fi. Post punch it transcends into an enjoyable action flick but the first 15 minutes is far and away the best part of the movie

Didn't the events after his visit to Rekall played out according to the memories he requested to be implanted for his virtual trip?

Definitely another Arnold classic. Top 5 easy.

Best Arnold movie Dookake? Let's not get crazy.
The top 5 are easy (if we are going by quality and not cheesy awesomeness):

Terminator
Terminator 2
Predator
Total Recall
True Lies

The order is the hardest part...

Swap out one of the Terminators for Conan.

I would replace T2 with Conan. T2 tried give the Terminator too much character in order to highlight Arnold as the star. I know they came up with the whole "learning computer" plot line, but that was just an excuse to allow Arnold to have lines with more personality to them. T2 is a great movie, but the changes to the Terminator character removed a lot of the edge that the first movie had. Conan, much like the Terminator in T1, is a role that Arnold was born to play. I believe both movies would have been failures without Arnold as the lead (yes I consider him the lead in T1).

Edit: Sheeeiiitt. Beaten by the Count.

T2??? I would take T2 over the original any day...

I might just be my personal preference, but I found T1's gritty science fiction atmosphere to be above and beyond T2, which for the most part felt like a corny and (albeit awesome) action film.
