Touhou 17 is Coming to Steam on September 10; Story Summary

Full story summary for Touhou 17 〜 Wily Beast and Weakest Creature, whose demo is accessible on Steam.

Touhou 17 〜 Wily Beast and Weakest Creature will be available on Steam on September 10. ZUN stated that he wishes to complete Touhou 17 by summer though, so the game will probably first release physically at Comiket 96 in August.

Touhou 17’s demo, which was first released at Reiteisai 16 on May 5, is now available on the Steam page. You can find plenty of runs of the demo on YouTube to get a quick idea of the game.

Needless to say, September 10’s Steam release will only include Japanese text. The story obviously isn’t the main aspect of the main “official” Touhou games. We’ve translated the story summary for those interested though:

The Children’s Limbo
A desolate place where countless stone stacks have been piled up by the souls of dead children.
Reimu: “Do we really need to get through this place to reach Hell?”
The animal spirits accompanying Reimu stay silent.
Reimu:” You could at least answer you know”
The animal spirits never said anything since when they were possessed by Reimu.
Reimu: “Well anyway, we’ll know what’s happening once we’re in Hell”
Animal spirits have crossed Sanzu River. It seems a group of them is planning to take over Gensokyo by force.
The animal spirits with Reimu used to be animal spirits of Gensokyo. They decided to betray the other animal spirits from Hell. Together with a group of humans, these animal spirits venture in Hell, trying to stop the attack on Gensokyo.
Reimu doesn’t know if the animal spirits accompanying her speak the truth. However, it is a fact that Gensokyo is currently under attack by animal spirits. As such, Reimu decides to believe in the traitors and check what’s going on in Hell.

Touhou 17 also has multiple new gameplay elements. Those accustomed to the series will notice these as they try out the demo.

ZUN announced Touhou 17 via his official blog on April 17, describing the game as darker and more aggressive than usual. This is the newest main “official” game. A multitude of Touhou games are releasing every year, developed by tons of different companies. I’ve written a quick overview of the franchise in a previous article.
