These are code names.

Unsure if Trinity is the code name for the PS5 Pro or a game.

Royal is 100% a game.

I don't understand why nobody realizes this!!!! While there have been great games this generation (99% coming from third party), ALL games have been nothing but PS4 games. There hasn't been ONE game that truly looks, plays, feels and is designed as a PS5 ONLY game.

During the PS3 gen, many games were jaw-dropping: MGS4, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, LittleBigPlanet, The Last of Us, etc.
During the PS4 gen they had Uncharted 4, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, TLOUS Part II, Spider-Man (among many others).

All these games were truly current gen and unthinkable about running in last gen hardware.

During PS5 there hasn't been ONE game that you look or play and say: This is truly new! Whether graphics, design, gameplay. Every single game INCLUDING THIRD PARTY, have been games that either are still released on PS4, or are still designed as PS4 games.

Those designs are evident. Remember those anime-like games that release on each console and still feel like PS2 games? (Like Neptunia and stuff like that). Every single game this gen, still feel like a better-looking PS4 game.

Do people really want to pay $600 or $700 just so their PS4-designed game runs at 60fps at 4K? Everybody loved Super Mario 64, but even if you run it at 240fps/8K is still an N64 game. This is what the PS5 Pro feels like right now.

The first 3 years of ps4 was literally people asking where are the games then Sony dropped e3 2016 and made Sony first party games as elite as Nintendo overnight...I'm sure naughty dog will melt eyes soon on ps5 pro

Yeah, and there would be significant backlash too.

But you are right. This make perfect sense.

Now I'm worried.
Yeah, said the same thing. They put all that work into making a disk drive. Get the feeling it'll be the standard to get console costs down.
While making even more from the drive? 🤔
Personally dont give a shit either way. Im a sucker.

It's annoying af that the pro will most likely be the best option for GTA6 when it comes out, the proper PC version wont be out for at least a couple of years after due to the double dip greed philosophy of R*. This alone will most likely tip me over the edge to actually get a pro.

Dont blame u bro, earliest we get pc version will be around or even after next gen so 2028-2029.

What does this even mean?

PS4 designed games? what game on PC is doing something that couldn't run on a PS4? I've got a 4090, I haven't played a single game that as designed couldn't be made to run on a PS4.

Game visuals have hit diminishing returns, even playing at ultra settings on PC you are hard pushed to spot differences unless a game is side by side, IQ is better on PC, frame rate is better, what else can they do?

There's no dual analog moment, our inputs have largely been perfected, there's no great leap in visuals, there's nothing that can reasonably stand out from gen 8 to 9, it's why PS4/Xbox One were so crucial, play a PS4 game on BC and it doesn't feel jank or look terrible, sure textures are lower quality, there's less triangles in the but unless you're really looking for it you won't tell.

R&C Rift Apart and Spider-Man 2 are the only games that would have been objectively worse on PS4 because of the portals, but even then, it could have still been made for PS4 you'd just have a longer transition between hitting the portal and coming out the other side.

If you want an entirely new experience you need to go to VR, we've hit the limit of what we can do with our current interface and input.

Don’t get me wrong I’ll probably get one cuz I’m an idiot. But the hype around here is batshit stupid for this.
In the same boat. I reckon part of the hype is coming from the feeling of 'this generation hasn't started properly yet' with the lack of truly next-gen exclusives. Logically or not, there seems to be hope that the PS5 Pro might somehow be the herald of the 'real' next generation, really showing off what it can do. 🤷‍♂️

The biggest generational leap for me was returnal with the insane Sound quality in my home cinema. Even non gamers were perplexed at what the fuck Was going on.

Pretty sure pc could do it as well, but i dont think anybody did so far.

Mark Cerny gave a literally flawless presentation talking about PS5 architecture with his "road to PS5" speech, not a single "uh" or "ehh" and he talked for almost an hour. It is easily one of the best presentations I have ever seen.

I can listen to this man talk about the benefits of moving from 2 millisecond seek time to instantaneous SSD or custom I/O units for hours.

Mark Cerny is a god and easily one of Playstation's most important assets.
That's most likely because he spends a day or two rehearsing his talk. I do that as well with important presentations and lectures.

True, but cerny completly fucked the competition in console Design.

Hopefully he will do the PS6 and even PS7 but the men sadly gets old like everyone else.

I don't get why we are making this complicated.

I am sure I now sound like a broken record, but I have been saying this for months now.

PS5pro will be $100 more expensive than the PS5slim.

PS5Slim + DD = $500
PS5pro + DD = $600

PS5Slim Digital = $450
PS5pro Digital = $550

And at some point in the future, Sony will "drop" the price of all Playstations, but that will just mean they discontinue the DD bundled SKU, and drop the digital PS5 slim and Pro SKU down to $400 and $500 respectively.

$500 for PS5 Slim, $600 for PS5 Pro is just too low a price difference to make sense to me. I would like this to be the case but I highly doubt it. Hopefully they announce pricing tonight.

Absolutely, that's the right price.

But I'm still going with...

$599*

*Disc Drive sold separately

It's actually super easy to analyze this.

The first and important question to ask is... does a PS5 pro cost Sony $100 more to make than a PS5? Please note, the question isn't if the PS5pro cost Sony $$$ to make, it's if it costs them $$$ more than a PS5 to make.

I think this is what has people quoting strange prices, they aren't looking at this from a BOM perspective.

eg. If Sony currently spends $80 on a PS5 slim APU. Then they would be spending around $120 on a PS5pro APU. That is not $120 more expensive, it's only $40 more expensive. Then take the RAM, if Sony spends $60 on PS5slim RAM, then they could be spending $80 on the PS5pro RAM (same amount, just faster), Again, this is not $80 more than the Slim, it's $20 more.

And after you have done the RAM and APu, you will quickly realize that sony is not changing much else in the Pro. Its literally a PS5 Slim, but with a better APU and faster RAM. Thats it. Hell, the PSU that is currently in the Slim is likely powerful enough to handle the Pro. Oh, and more heat sinks. Those are the three things being changed here. APU, RAM, and heat sinks. Maybe throw in a bigger fan?

Well I don't really know what the manufacturing price difference will be. It has an integrated AI Block with 300 TOPS, how much does that add on? $5? $15? No clue. APU, Ram, Cooling and probably a higher wattage PSU will contribute to a higher BOM.

I'm just looking at it more from a product line-up perspective. BOM dictates what they need to charge to break-even or profit, but not what they have to charge. It doesn't make sense to me to have such a small price difference between the normal and premium version of the console. Especially at your proposed digital pro price point. $500 for a PS5 DD, or $550 for a PS5 Pro Digital? Hmmmm.

PS4 Slim to PS4 Pro was $100 true, but proportionally that was a 33% increase in price. Whereas $500 for Slim and $600 for Pro would be just a 20% increase in price.

It's probably not a dedicated NPU. It's just WMMA instructions.

Really hope the upscale isn't temporal like FSR and is AI based like DLSS.

At first the idea of FSR sounded great but in reality it's an absolute eye sore the worst upscale out there even Intel XESS is better.

Such a shame as most consumer devices are using AMD for some reason (cost?).

If Sony have managed to secretly engineer DLSS type upscaling than that would be absolutely incredible but I fail to see how they'd be able to. As far as I am aware they don't have much of an AI engineering team and would have to suddenly leapfrog AMD solution.

Later on should be very interesting.

All modern upscalers are tempral upscalers. They all use "temporal data", ie, data from previous frames to upscale the image. If your question, however, is whether or not PSSR will use machine learning like DLSS and XeSS, the answer is yes.

DLSS 1.0 wasn’t really temporal-based ironically enough and suffered as a result of being spatial-based. If I recall, it was trained per game using 16K (resolution)sample images from NVIDIA’s neural network and tried to upscale them in game. Sounded awesome in practice, but it did a shit job in reality.

The PSSR really is the make or break for this device and we need to see it in action. Otherwise a 45% increase in GPU Performance, a 10% increase in CPU and a little more ram available to games isn't much to write home about. DLSS quality upscaling on a console would be game changing though.

3-4x RT performance is nothing to sneeze at ;).

looking forward to tonight, bring it on. Hope they can show some games running on the Pro.

I reckon we may get a glimpse of some gameplay, or screenshots, but only fleeting glances, just enough to enforce what Cerny may be discussing at that point.

Team (of one) £529.00.

All I want to know is will the current slim external drive fit the new digital pro? Don't want to wait until Dec if that's true!

Every single game this gen, still feel like a better-looking PS4 game.
I think this warrants a deeper conversation (what does 'feel like' mean to you, or anyone really).
And it also cuts both ways. What on PS4 isn't just better looking PS3 games? (eg. nothing from the list you posted is mechanically doing anything we haven't seen before, outside of visual fidelity).
Of course you can say 'it doesn't look improved enough' - but that's fundamentally still just about 'better looking PS4 games' - the argument just becomes 'more better'.
