All modern upscalers are tempral upscalers. They all use "temporal data", ie, data from previous frames to upscale the image. If your question, however, is whether or not PSSR will use machine learning like DLSS and XeSS, the answer is yes.

DLSS 1.0 wasn’t really temporal-based ironically enough and suffered as a result of being spatial-based. If I recall, it was trained per game using 16K (resolution)sample images from NVIDIA’s neural network and tried to upscale them in game. Sounded awesome in practice, but it did a shit job in reality.

The PSSR really is the make or break for this device and we need to see it in action. Otherwise a 45% increase in GPU Performance, a 10% increase in CPU and a little more ram available to games isn't much to write home about. DLSS quality upscaling on a console would be game changing though.
Yeah PSSR really could be a game changer, which is why I am going to be skeptical until I see it.
I remember leaks a while ago suggesting it could upscale beyond 4k for supersampling, but lets be honest its more likely to be on the weaker side and PS6 will be the biggest uptick.

But its one of those things that could extend the console lifecycle. Considering DLSS can upscale from 50% scale to decent results than I can see it being transformative. Means games only need to render at 1080 native and then scale to 4k which means something like Space Marine would be 4k upscale at 60fps if similar to DLSS that would be acceptable.

Spider Man unlocked mode would be 80-100fps upscaled to 4k.

GT7 120 fps upscaled to 4k.

It would be pretty epic.

I dont use DLSS perf mode really so im not sure what the level of artefacting etc would be and what Sonys method would be like as Id imagine at best wed be looking at DLSS 2 levels of improvements.

I can imagine this becoming a release type thing, PSSR launches. PS6 launches with PSSR 2 tick on the box and then big updates meaning we get PSSR 3 etc.

What I hope to NOT see is any kind of Frame Gen, im really not a fan tbh.

Honestly I think it gets worse. At 47 I have much more disposable income and now the kids are growing up and have more things to do without Dad.
Pretty much. My daughter is 15 now and generally wants to do her own thing. Saying that, she does want to come and watch Man Utd live with me, so I’m happy with that at least.

As far as I am aware they don't have much of an AI engineering team and would have to suddenly leapfrog AMD solution.
Sony has 120k employees (roughly 4x more than NVidia). Even if you work for them - chances are you don't have visibility in many(most?) of the teams they have there.
That being said - image processing(including reconstruction) has been an active field of research in Sony far longer(decades, even) than any of the other companies we're discussing here - so the one thing they don't lack is relevant domain expertise.

Better than I have achieved with their interest in Utd. Still though not hard given our start to the season :)

My guess. Cerny will present pro's hardware specs and pre-orders will open later this month at state of play event.

Not to console war (or basically pc war), but I dont understand buying an incremental upgrade for 500/600 dollars, when you could build a PC for the cost of 2 PS5's which will outlast the entire console generation.
But this may not be the best thread to state such a thing.
Some crowd doesnt like to play on pc, on top there are amazing playstation exclusives(recent example astrobot) that are only avaiable on playstation mashines, if enough of musthaves land on playstation even pc user might feel compelled enough, not for base ps5 at launch but 4-5years in for the pr0 instead.

Plus people keep treating this as you have to pay $600 to upgrade your PS5 to a PS5 Pro... no you sell your PS5. Just as I'll sell my RTX 3060 when I upgrade my GPU.

Yeah I don’t get it either. All this hype and excitement, ready to splurge money just for…. Not having a gimped FSR and shit RDNA RT. Basically what the consoles should have been day 1. Minimum requirements at launch should be to not become a pixel soup with cross gen titles, it failed.

But when making a price list for a PC in the $800 range, don’t forget the extra cost of a windows key

Then add the monthly fees on consoles for online and these machines make even less sense than they ever did.

But Astrobot will be on PC 💯

I don’t think any exclusives will make a PC gamer budge now if all times since Sony opened the door. Time exclusive? Sure, but its easy to wait.

It's not the same thing man. And I keep seeing this comment being regurgitated.

You don't have to understand. It's a preference you enjoy. I have a PC for music production but have it to play a few games should I choose to. I prefer being at the couch. Comfortably. On my big "77 OLED screen. With my Console. Pop in a disc or play a digital version of a game. Done.

If games were more day and date releases on PC then I can understand the argument a bit more, but it's still a preference. Not waiting 3 years for a game to hit PC (or if it even happens). Shit my time is short these days to play games. It's on Console? It's out now? Boom, done.

It's just like it is to buy that phone or car or even the new GPU / CPU. You don't need to buy those every year even though there's a new one on the market annually. And those are incremental upgrades too btw.

""I hope Mark Cerny will officially present it, with a complete Tech deep dive"", at least what I said on Sept the 2nd, on ps5-pro-specs-leak-are-real-releasing-holiday-2024-insider Thread.

I said "I hope", in reality I was sure, but didn't say for superstition :D

Can't wait people !!!

Just start learning to understand why people prefer not to build PCs versus having a Console. Your question comes up on a daily basis. You should have gotten your answer long ago ;)

This is what most people are missing completely. Sony litteraly kickstarted the image reconstruction era using dedicated hardware on a console in 2016. They have probably started working on CBR years before that. They have at least 10 years of experience designing and doing image reconstruction on a console.

And for RT they were the first to showcase high quality RT reflections at 60fps in an open-world game. They also have years of experience designing tools and solution to improve efficiency on a closed hardware. I do think all of that is going to shine on PS5 Pro.

They can emulate the PS1 and PS2 right now on your existing PS5. Sony elect to charge a monthly subscription instead. I doubt they'd hand away PS3 emulation for free.

I think PS2 games especially are tested on game by game basis. Those VU were tricky motherf**ers to code for.

CELL? I think that is a nightmare to emulate right now on PS5

Someone tell the R&D team at Soony that same world it opens leads to the damn PS4 as well seeing as everything is cross gen this generation.

What does this even mean?

What difference does it make if it's cross generation? what can they do different if they don't make it cross-gen?

Game visuals have hit diminishing returns, even playing at ultra settings on PC you are hard pushed to spot differences unless a game is side by side, IQ is better on PC, frame rate is better, what else can they do?

There's no dual analog moment, our inputs have largely been perfected, there's no great leap in visuals, there's nothing that can reasonably stand out from gen 8 to 9, it's why PS4/Xbox One were so crucial, play a PS4 game on BC and it doesn't feel jank or look terrible, sure textures are lower quality, and less polygons, but unless you're really trying hard to look you won't notice.

R&C Rift Apart and Spider-Man 2 are the only games that would have been objectively worse on PS4 because of the portals, but even then, it could have still been made for PS4 you'd just have a longer transition between hitting the portal and coming out the other side.

If you want an entirely new experience you need to go to VR, we've hit the limit of what we can do with our current interface and input.

People are simply seeing just how much everyone except for NVIDIA is struggling in that area.
This is a very exclusive high tech club were a handful of architects can make all the difference, and obviously these handful of top of the line specialists all seem to work for NVIDIA which have kept their technological lead for quite a while now.
Overall manpower doesn´t mean squat here, the cashflow and which experts you can attract with it does.
The expectation, that Sony has any chance of leapfrogging AMD and maybe even get close to NVIDIA is....far fetched to say the least.
