Holy shit...I guess I was sleeping on the pre-order price for the 2TB XSX. Just looked it up and YUP the Galaxy Black version is $600...wtf.

Its freaking madness. Hopefully MS do some sort of price drop but I doubt it. Seems they are stuck needing to make certain margins on console sales now. Non of that sell at a loss and make money back from game sales.

Bit of a dillema for me.

I still don't have a PS5, and I feel it would be foolish to get one with a Pro so close. But there's also no way I'm going to spend 700 euros on a console. Besides I have a big backlog on Xbox, it's not that I exactly need it.

Only a few PS5 exclusives I missed out on, but those won't be going away or anything. Maybe I'll get one once I start seeing the real big differences in videos.

It's actually super easy to analyze this.

The first and important question to ask is... does a PS5 pro cost Sony $100 more to make than a PS5? Please note, the question isn't if the PS5pro cost Sony $$$ to make, it's if it costs them $$$ more than a PS5 to make.

I think this is what has people quoting strange prices, they aren't looking at this from a BOM perspective.

eg. If Sony currently spends $80 on a PS5 slim APU. Then they would be spending around $120 on a PS5pro APU. That is not $120 more expensive, it's only $40 more expensive. Then take the RAM, if Sony spends $60 on PS5slim RAM, then they could be spending $80 on the PS5pro RAM (same amount, just faster), Again, this is not $80 more than the Slim, it's $20 more.

And after you have done the RAM and APu, you will quickly realize that sony is not changing much else in the Pro. Its literally a PS5 Slim, but with a better APU and faster RAM. Thats it. Hell, the PSU that is currently in the Slim is likely powerful enough to handle the Pro. Oh, and more heat sinks. Those are the three things being changed here. APU, RAM, and heat sinks. Maybe throw in a bigger fan?
But...

MS are gone. Switch 2 is next year and presumably not a powerhouse home console.

Sony are alone for the moment. They can make a console that will be - even without DF pixel peeping - better than any other console available and that could continue for years.

For that console performance they could charge a premium.

I hope they won't, but they could... Especially if they think they'll get ~20 million thirsty Xbox owners in the US switching.

Can't wait for this little preview. Yeah, the hardware is interesting, but for me personally, I think once they finally unveil the Pro, they'll finally let us in on what games they have planned for 2025 and possibly 2026 and I'm finally closing in on finishing my 2022/2023 backlog.

Im a day one ps4 pro enjoyer but I dont see myself buying the ps5 pro. I dont have many complains over the amateur ps5. I like this machine. I have a 55" 4k TV that needed the ps4pro, I havent changed the tv...I would buy the system for a more stable 60 fps? this system its just not for me. Im not changing my tv, is good enough for series and movies. OLED is way too expensive here in south america.

I hope they share at least one new big 2025 game from their first party as a showcase for this today. Doubtful but it would help the excitement.

Let's be honest...the guy is just going to talk a bunch of technical stuff and why it benefits the developers. People want reasons to buy it. The sony exclusives released so far on ps5 have been well optimised to run well on base ps5. Major 3rd party games for the most part, have been well optimised as well. What do I need a pro for?

In 9 minutes? It would be a complete marketing failure to do so. I would expect Sony to have Cerny do a brief explanation. And then show, not tell, the benefits. Possibly with an announcement of an existing or future game that will demonstrate what the system can do.

The problem is this isn't the marketing aspect, this is for us nerds

What does this even mean?

PS4 designed games? what game on PC is doing something that couldn't run on a PS4? I've got a 4090, I haven't played a single game that as designed couldn't be made to run on a PS4.

Game visuals have hit diminishing returns, even playing at ultra settings on PC you are hard pushed to spot differences unless a game is side by side, IQ is better on PC, frame rate is better, what else can they do?

There's no dual analog moment, our inputs have largely been perfected, there's no great leap in visuals, there's nothing that can reasonably stand out from gen 8 to 9, it's why PS4/Xbox One were so crucial, play a PS4 game on BC and it doesn't feel jank or look terrible, sure textures are lower quality, there's less triangles in the but unless you're really looking for it you won't tell.

R&C Rift Apart and Spider-Man 2 are the only games that would have been objectively worse on PS4 because of the portals, but even then, it could have still been made for PS4 you'd just have a longer transition between hitting the portal and coming out the other side.

If you want an entirely new experience you need to go to VR, we've hit the limit of what we can do with our current interface and input.

Agree about diminishing returns in visual fidelity and performance. Disagree about reaching the limit in innovation. There are plenty of opportunities there, it’s just a matter of how well they are implemented. Augmented reality is the perfect match for gaming.

With 100% of big budget games forced to stay within scaling range of 2019 budget hardware aka consoles and even though outliers like the UE5 demos, CP2077 or Wukong exist which give us a glimpse as to where the journey will go just regarding lighting and asset quality and before we`ve even talked about simulation aspects f.e. you are talking about diminishing returns..........
