Republican President Donald Trump promised in his election campaign to restore U.S. coal jobs that he said had been destroyed by environmental regulations put into effect by his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama.

Dayton Power & Light, a subsidiary of AES Corp. (AES), said in an emailed statement that it planned to close the J.M. Stuart and Killen plants by June 2018 because they would not be “economically viable beyond mid-2018.”

Coal demand has flagged in recent years due to competition from cheap and plentiful natural gas.

Haha! And they are poised to lose their insurance that covers all the ailments from working in the mines too!

Good news this Monday morning!

Don't worry. Trump will do something to revive the clean coal market.

Honestly, i do feel sort of bad for the workers. They got conned November.

This must be fake news. I saw the coal miners with Trump at that bill signing for the bill to let them dump their coal waste in rivers. They had jobs again. They were wearing their miner outfits and everything! Coal is back!

First the circus and now coal plants? Who could have seen this coming?!

How is anyone supposed to live a wholesome 1870s lifestyle anymore, I ask!!

I can't believe that they would close down these plants that give off awesome smoke clouds. You'd have to be Einstein to figure out the digital that they are replacing these with.

I'm sure Donny's got a tweet that will save them lined up any minute now...

They voted him in and now he's over in the Middle East touching glowing orbs with rich Saudis while the coal plants shut down.

Can't make this stuff up.

Oh no! What will these poor white men who refuse to learn a new trade do!? Where is their advocate? Truly the most disenfranchised group in america...........

Economic anxiety intensifies.

Truthfully I pity the people in these areas who can't imagine another way forward without coal. They're ignorant and in many ways I won't fault them for that. But at some point they have to take responsibility for duping themselves into thinking that coal continues to be viable when it isn't. As they would tell others, I'm sure, they should pick themselves up by the bootstraps, saddle in, and learn a trade. Easier said than done, I know, but that's the reality. If you don't get with it you'll just hit the grave earlier.

I would absolutely love to see some of the reactions from trump supporters in those plants.

Not that I disagree with the politically charged comments in this thread, but it still sucks that these people and families have lost a likely vital source of income and security.

They didn't get conned. They knew exactly what and who they were voting for.

It's amazing how a majority of the minority working class can see through the the bullshit Trump and Republicans spew but some how these coal workers and others couldn't.

Come on. Have some empathy. You are jumping for joy that some people are going to have it even shittier, will die, will get homeless. Yeah, I know they voted for Trump but the reason why at least I hate trump and the Republican Party (cause let's not let the republicans place all the blame on trump when he is just doing what they want) is he is going to make it worse for people.

It's one thing to say this is karma. But to outright be jumping for joy over the fact people are going to suffer?

That being said, the cynical side in me says they blame it on people not letting trump do his job *sigh*.

Time to shut down all nuclear, solar and wind power plants and start subsidizing coal. With all the coming cuts to medicaid and anti-poverty laws and regs. Trump & republicans shall finally take America where it belongs.

I have Z E R O empathy for these people. We told them the stove was burning hot and they touched it anyways. I'll save my tears for people who actually matter to me and are in danger of losing everything. Poor white people never have empathy when its one of us, so i'm just repaying it in kind. You can feel how ever you want to about it, I really do not care.

Who needs coal when this thread is contributing tons of green energy?

Seriously. Tone it down. Yes a lot of them voted for Trump but you're cheering tons of people losing their livelihood. We're better than this. It's not like they chose these jobs among a plethora of high paying safe options.

yeah, sometimes I feel kinda bad. But more and more, it's hard to find some shred of empathy for the "fuck you I got mine" crowd and for knowingly voted for a man for his racism and harmful policies.
