And there it is. Not much more needs to be said. If sex ed wasn't a joke then teens wouldn't have to trounce the internet for shitty porn to learn how sex stuff works. How is that hard for dodgy Dave to understand?

I don't think kids are looking at porn to see how sex stuff works.

I don't think kids are looking at porn to see how sex stuff works.

I meant more in the sense of understanding sex through porn, and you'd be surprised. I know more than a fair few people who's sexual knowledge stems from porn because their sex-ed was lackluster. And many of them don't know that a lot of porn doesn't portray normal sexual relationships.

Edit:

That is not the point. Before they are of the age that they regularly look at porn (which will happen no matter what), they should have had proper sex ed so they know that what they see in porn isn't the norm.

Exactly. Added to that the fact that there is pretty much zero sex ed for non-hetero relationships, so kids who are curious about themselves and their sexuality are often left to learn about it from porn instead of actually being properly educated.

This is a valid concern, but should be handled through better sex education in schools and from parents.

Except this government is bizarrely squeamish about sex education. There was a proposal for mandatory sex education, supported by practically everyone (not least the Secretary of State for Education herself), yet it was blocked.

I think they believe they can somehow keep sex a secret from children until they turn 18.

Who could have guessed that a direct result of voting Conservative would be being forced to have an awkward conversation with your teenage child after a one pence test charge labelled PORNHUB appears on the bank statement of the card they stole the details from.

Because, you know, this law still wouldn't stop underage people getting access to these sites, and definitely not from accessing porn in general.

Er...are there any porn sites on the entire Internet that are even affected by these "laws"?

Is this initiative even going to accomplish anything except making the Tories look better to old age pensioner puritans?

I hear 'prove your age to access porn sites', but what I'm really getting from that is a veiled way to start tracking people's internet usage. More metadata for the government.
The Snoopers Charter is alive and well and flying the 'won't somebody please think of the children' flag.
Edit: In fact, I'd love to see how they think they can implement this - probably an 'ID-linked scheme for Internet access, under centralised control and monitoring'. Thin end of the wedge.

yeah, try that and see how it works.

just out of curiousity...how would they go about shutting down pornsites? i can't think of one that is based in the uk. they aren't gonna do anything about the likes of pornhub for example which is based in the US.

people will just use proxies/vpns.

Completely agree with age verification in principle but not sure this is the best way to implement it. Strangely though porn sites were far more restrictive in the early days with online passports etc.
never felt prouder to be an american right now
The country that doesn't even allow nudity or bad language on network TV even after the watershed? Despite the crackdown on online porn, the U.K. Is far more liberal than the US when it comes to sex and nudity, the rest of Europe even more so. Also do you know what 'Page 3' is?

This isn't about adults viewing porn, it's about kids viewing porn, getting addicted to porn and becoming desensitised. It's a bigger issue in today's society than many GAFers will be mature enough to admit.

I laugh at the belief that someone would be damaged by looking at porn just because they happen to be under 18. Somehow we as a society accept that 16 year olds are responsible enough to consent to sex with anyone of their choosing and yet we also believe they somehow will be damaged by looking at porn (I started looking at porn when I was as young as 13 and I turned out to be a normal person). There's a clear disconnect here.

Also, David Cameron FUCKED A PIG. And you can legislate on the country's 'moral standards'?

Ugh, utterly predicted this when I chimed as part of the public survey, and yes, noted that if they went with say, a credit card based system, that was creating a whole lot of risk. Not to mention the legal logistics of trying to deal with sites that are based overseas.

Admittedly put in a few alternate suggestions if they really did want something, but I doubt those even got glanced at.

You know, they might actually block Reddit for /r/gonewild, etc. But I'll just use a VPN in that case. Nothing's gonna stop me from looking at hot naked women. The government doesn't give a shit about consultations anyway, so I don't think they read them.

My government are ridiculous.

"Let's ignore the smaller problems like corporation tax dodgers and money laundering. Let's focus on the real big issues that are threatening our country. We need to protect poor Timmy, we need to stop as many people looking as smut as possible!"

'Most' would be more appropriate. That aside, if 14-year-olds are learning about sex from porn or go in thinking it's realistic, that says a lot about the quality of their sex-ed.

Well, sure good sex-ed is great, but it's not unusual kids would still see porn as "hot" and something they would want to try. It's the teacher's words against what really makes their socks rock in the videos.

No matter how good the sex education is, the overabundance and easiness of getting to watch porn is still a problem.

If a government enforces decent standards on industry, health and safety etc, its a 'nanny state'. If, on the other hand, a cabal of ageing white Torys want to enforce their morality on everybody.....

Also, David Cameron FUCKED A PIG. And you can legislate on the country's 'moral standards'?

I really don't understand why porn is restricted for over 18?

Shouldn't it be legal as soon as you reach puberty?

has the banking industry had any say in this? since this is likely to increase fraud cases 100 fold, considering most post sites are littered with fishing adds

Excellent. This will be the straw that gets a Yes in the 2nd referendum, since we Scots are a nation of wankers.

Teachers and parents. The parents have the most important role in this. I feel this is forgotten mostly and people just want to push this responsibility off to a school because it might be awkward to talk about. They should educate their child about these things. They should also monitor what their child is up to online to a certain point, so if they are looking at extreme things, you can have a talk about that.

I am not against some regulation on these things, but this is just stupid. The only thing this will achieve is driving people to sites not hosted in the UK.

Germany
I for one welcome our new British refugees. Here's Germany 101:

- you need a football team, go with the HSV for the most action
- learn a bit of German, even if most people should understand you just fine, we like it if you put in some effort
- no matter what they tell you, just say "Moin" when you want to greet someone
- if a Bavarian gentleman looks at you angrily after you said "Moin", follow up with "Ich mag Brötchen" and witness his Bavarian soul dying deep inside
- be nice to people

Isn't there any other way for age verification? Passport number/drivings license?

Yes, the best way forward is to put everyone's credit card details at the mercy of individual site owners. How could that possibly go wrong?

How are they going to do this when most of the porn websites aren't even based in the UK and wouldn't have to conform to any such laws here?

I agree that porn sites are too open as they are now, but they can't enforce this other than locking out non-UK internet sites for everyone in the UK and that isn't going to ever fly no matter how many "won't somebody think of the children" laws they try to pass.

That is literally the worst. I don't have either of those, because currently I don't need them and they're really expensive to get.
