Covid also boosted those sales. We might not like it, but digital is going to overtake physical in 3-5 years. Especially, with physicals having disadvantage of being produced in bulk numbers, marketing deals, and having to eat all those costs. While digital, its just a key that you are selling it, which makes it easier to make money of, and not lose all those money from producing physical copies (factories, hiring people to print those disc's, shipping).
Yeah, digital is the future, whether we like it or not. I personally go digital for most games. Especially on these next-gen consoles, it takes more time to physically switch a disk than loading the entire game digitally stored on the SSD.

Also, I'm lazy and wouldn't like the idea of storing 100s of physical disks in my room either.

This is a very important point that is easy to ignore, and many do ignore this.

This was the first time PlayStation ever recorded a net profit during a console launch year. Even if we assume a meager $50 loss per unit sold (it would be higher than that, I reckon), we are selling at roughly half a billion dollar in net loss. Remove that (just breakeven that Sony has achieved now), and we are looking at an even bigger cut.

If Horizon Forbidden West does manage to release this year, and there is a big Call of Duty game as well, I'm expecting Sony to easily cross $4 or $4.5 billion in profit this year.
Hardwares right now will sell at loss early, then gain profits, because of the increase demand. Before, it was slow for tech to progress at faster its doing now. Each year we have a new graphic card, which make the old graphic card cheaper as the year goes.

The service part like you said, is where consoles makes money. Its also the reason why Microsoft is doing the gamepass model. Hardwares hinders that service sales. Having a service which people can use it anywhere, will bring extra revenue, while you continue to sell your console, and other 3rd party gives you the profit, to cover the losses of the hardwares.

Right now Sony is moving to the pc market. That is extra revenue, which they aren't getting any slice from it, while Microsoft is getting those sales. Remember Microsoft sold 50m x1 consoles. The pc market covers advantages the Playstation has on those numbers. And Sony doesn't want Microsoft to enjoy those money by itself.

Let’s do some quick math:

- UK is between 8 and 10% of the global market depending on which data you take on Google;
The fundamental flaw with your calculations is that you're using the UK as some form of bellwether. Europe is between 40-47% of the console gaming market according to research and in Europe, Playstation's lowest share in any country is 70% (UK) and frequently 90% +

We have a very significant market leadership… Well, we have market leadership in every country in Europe, and have very significant market leadership in continental Europe. Extremely significant. I don’t think market-share’s any less than 70%, and frequently greater than 90% in continental Europe.

True. I don't think Sony likes the idea of supporting PC but it has become a necessary evil to thwart Microsoft's advantage that they gained for embracing the PC market. This inflated their userbase from 40 million to 160 million userbase, leaving behind PlayStation's 120 million userbase.

Once PlayStation embraces the PC market (it will have its negative impact, too), then PS will have a potential userbase of ~250 million. Xbox will lose that advantage over PS, and both these companies will again be competing on a level-playing field.

Regarding hardware profit, I was referencing to the latest official report by Sony will start making profit on each PS5 unit it sells from June onwards.

Since some are assuming things… I’ll try it

I’m assuming that’ll this trend continues, MS and devs will be aware that Xbox is not a huge platform that drive sales, meaning it could become a factor were a small/mid tier studio decides to only release to PS5 and not for Xbox SS and XS to save time and resources used for optimization.

I know it’s far fetched but it did happened with … Nintendo! So it could be possible

Xbox and game pass is entirely digitally focused, thus Xbox gamers will be much more likely to only buy digital copies.
This is me. I used to be a staunch physical only gamer. Now that I subscribe to gamepass I’m mostly digital only. It definitely changed my purchasing habits.

Microsoft doesn't need to pay for exclusivity. Just put the game day 1 on Gamepass, and let the game sell on Playstation. Would be a win for all parties. And it wouldn't be as expensive as actual exclusivity.
Those deals actually cover 1m copy sales. For example, if Microsoft pays 60m-70m for outriders and mlb the show each, they would cover 1m sales. Then you add non gamepass subs sales. After that, you add gamepass subs sales they do in this 1 year deal. That is alot of copies sold in 1 year. In a sense, gamepass increases their sales. They are covered by Microsoft, so they don't have to worry about being flopped. They gain sales from non gamepass xbox owners. Then they gain money from those gamepass owners. That is only on xbox.

You also have the pc and Playstation side. Your business will bloom.

If the game is a flop, you still have that 60m-70m from Microsoft, and whatever copies you sold. You covered some of the losses. For example, God of war cost $200m to make. Microsoft deal will cover 40% of that, not counting sales.

Overall, gamepass is healthy for business. If you don't buy it, Microsoft will cover for it, by downloading the game. If you buy it, you are helping Microsoft, by showing you are a sub, who is buying the game.

As a PC gamer, I seriously doubt anything you said end up being true. For both sides. PC gaming is not some untapped gaming landscape, and there is far less money in PC gaming than Console games per game title. Remember that Elder Scrolls switched from PC centric to Console centric because Consoles made FAR more money.

If you believe PC gaming is a source of infinite money, why did Tod Howard abandon PC and built Skyrim around controllers?

I mean, good luck to you... But trying to make it on PC is hard.

Xbox did a great job hiding their own failures. That is why so many people even now are claiming Xbox is somehow leading the world, when they are literally coming 3rd. So much so that they are throwing out pity and triggered emojis when they are told that Xbox is not number 1.

Assumptions. We don't have any such data that validates that the digital sales ratio is higher on one platform vs. the other.

Yep, so using the Physical charts to compare to the software sales for each consoles is stupid in fact without these digital sales ratio.

The pc market is different breed though.
While Sony games might be advantage Playstation, it has no leg in the long term for pc market.

To do that, they need to change their business model. Introduce other genre to their line up.

Pc are generally social people. Games like rts, mmo, shooters are huge market in the pc department. They need to have those genres, to have a chance of beating Microsoft.

Microsoft has halo, great shooter for pc. Forza horizon (not motorsport), a great racing sim game. Sea of thieves, a good sociable game. And lastly age of empire series. And I am not counting Obsidian and bethesda, which are beloved by the pc community for their games.

Sony needs those games. 3rd person games are great on consoles, but not on pc, where you sit on your pc for a long time. While console is just a couch experience. Spiderman and God of war will carry them though. Those games are top notch. But cant say for the rest.

There is no reason to believe that people who want to buy the game would disproportionally prefer one console over another when switching distribution methods from physical to digital. Assuming customers want to buy the game, having a larger ratio of them being Playstation in the Physical format, tells us there are more playing on PlayStation overall.

A large number of Xbox customers buy digital, but so do PlayStation customers. And the difference as far as i am aware is not large.

I swear i heard this from Gameindusty.bz or Christopher Dring but i forgot where. Resident evil Village sold roughly 50% and more on PlayStation, 25% on pc and rest is on Xbox. I believe this included digital as well. Sorry i just don't have the source so i will try to find it.
Alright found the source but it is not from gameindustry.bz or Christopher Dring.

This guy seems legit and I believe that he actually works in the game indsutry.

Honestly wish Sony had a gamepass equivalent. I would try so many new games that I would never think to try due to the price barrier and lack of demo's.

In the early days I was against gamepass but now I think it's pretty much essential.

Skyrim launched on 4 consoles. Ps3-ps4 x360-x1. If you did your research, you will have known it. Plus the game is a pc game.

X1 is half of Playstation, and that is to be expected. They shot their self with Don Mattrick, which made the console sell 50m, while competition sold 114m.

The fact you are ignoring elderscroll as a pc games, makes it hard to take you seriously.

The fact that I had to mod Skyrim to make it playable with a Mouse and Keyboard is laughable. Skyrim is a console game and plays like it. Otherwise, give me back the ability to fly like with Morrowind. You have clearly never played older TES games on PC.

Friend, the article you posted is six years old. Please do better research before posting information that out of date. The most recent figures for the UK - the focus of the thread - that I can find are from GamingIndustry.biz in January, citing GSD market data:
In terms of games sales by consoles, PS4 was the top-performing platform, with 39.6% of games being bought on Sony's last-generation device. Of course, the absence of Nintendo games from the digital data does skew the overall figure. In terms of purely retail sales, PS4 was still No.1 with a 37.4% market share, but Nintendo Switch was close behind with 35.1%.

If we purely look at digital sales, PS4 had a 41% market share, ahead of Xbox One's 26%. This is just for full game download sales, so Xbox Game Pass isn't included in this.
All current European market share breakdown reports I can find link back to console operating system breakdowns, summarised here, which lists Sony in first with 68.4% share as of May 2021.

Hahaha.
I play the game with keyboard and mouse. And I don't even need mods for that. The fact you said that, makes your word bulshit.

If anything, pc makes the game look graphicly playable. While on my pc, graphic mod, and ultra setting made the game look like a ps5/xsx level of graphic, on my weakass pc.

I have the special edition on x1s, and it looks garbage to play on it.

I love the false narratives because they’re based on merely part of the picture. When there are charts showing physical and digital combined wake me up. I’ve owned both since launch and wouldn’t buy anything physical on PS as it’s ridiculously overpriced. Buying physical, finishing and selling on is the norm for me on the PS whereas on my Xbox I’m happier to buy digital. Last 4 purchases have been that split. Returnal and Ratchet and Clank physical on PS, Mass Effect and Resi 8 digital on XB.

Might not reflect the bigger picture, but it’s hilarious reading some people’s completely made up notions based on half the picture.

Games that aren't available on GP. I just bought Far Cry Blood Dragon, RE Village, Nier Replicant, and Ninja Gaiden 2. None were on GP, but GP is still a great deal.

The thing is... there are so many games on GamePass that you might as well just play those, and not bother forking out for anything else - unless there is a specific game that you want to play. GamePass has killed the impulse buy, or the 'maybe I'll like this' buy completely for anyone with an XBox.

You can either have a subscription based model, or a single purchase based model. XBox physical and digital game sales are bound to suffer quite a lot when GamePass exists.

No, it's totally valid. Unless there is credible data which proves that one platform has a significantly higher digital sales ratio than the other platform, you can definitely use these physical charts to estimate the overall worldwide sales (physical + digital).

PSN on average has better deals than xbox live. Literally amazon last week had Demons souls for PS5 for $50. I bought PS5 version of MK11 Ultimate with all DLC for $23. The had Disco Elysium cheaper than steam has had it. I think it all depends on how much your willing to wait. ghost and last of us part 2 are on sale on the regular for $30-40.

But mostly I dont buy digital yet. ONLY whenits super cheap.

I see a lot of “Microsoft will pay devs to put their games on Gamepass day 1..” posts.

Yes, maybe for the next two years, but if they don’t see a ROI, it won’t last. They’re not a charity after all. And the power lies with developers. They don’t need gamepass or Xbox to turn a profit, if 70% of sales is on a competing platform.

Exactly. This is before PS4 hit it's stride. Before UC4, the break-out success of HZD, Spider-Man, Bloodborne etc etc etc. It was written before Playstation grabbed two thirds of gamings power three marketing/early access for COD and Fifa, which means everything to the casuals here in Europe. It's before Playstation started setting and then breaking their own records, as seen in their financial reports, quarter, after quarter, after quarter...

If you're suggesting that GFK and a third party, non affiliated, research group knows more about Playstations EU business / market share than it's CEO then you're not discussing things in good faith. And I'd rather end the conversation here if we're not dealing with facts.

But is that an issue? Microsoft is happy with more GP subscribers, and game studios will have an incentive to put their games on GP and get paid for that

No, not suggesting it's an issue at all for Microsoft. That's their plan, and it's working for them. It just means less actual games sales from here on out on the platform.

You should have seen the may sales of demon souls sales. It was 60.99$. Miles was like 10$ cheaper. That is after 7 months. It doesn't have better deals. Both are the same.

Digital is the better in the long term, as its more secure. Not everyone is gonna get up, and change the disc all the time. Its a hassle in this age.

Oh noes, Neogaf thinks Xbox is doomed again for the 124737574th time.

how will I, an Xbox fan ever cope knowing we’re doomed again!? Someone show me where to buy a PS5 with no Gamepass and £70+ games!!

I do thoroughly enjoy the fact that no one here can see the background finances of these deals and services and are already calling doom and gloom.

That is because they are getting paid upfront. And that matters more than sales data. You are getting offset potential losses of the game. These payments helps you cover the cost of the production of the game. And the rest after that is pure profit.

To me that is isn't hurting any sales, its actually gives developers financial security for their games. They don't have to worry about potential flop of their games, since Microsoft is paying them upfront.

Yep, that's why it's a win for everyone. Devs make guaranteed money on release. Devs can still sell games on PS5. Microsoft makes money via Gamepass. Sony makes money via 30% fee. Everyone wins.

Definitely. That upfront payment is beneficial to publishers. But there is flip side to that coin. What happens when a publisher backed by their own internal financials prices a game beyond what XBOX is willing to pay?

I was excited by the rumours of BF 2042 coming to GP day 1. But according to rumours on reddit/gaming leaks EA priced 2042 way beyond XBOX's allocated budget for GP purchases.

The big dick heavy hitters will always be outside Microsoft's price range. Games like COD, Battlefield, GTA, all the sports games etc are too big to be on Gamepass day one. But they're an exception, not the rule.

(idk how much MLB sells, is it a "big" sports game like NBA and Fifa?)

We decide what the future is, they can make everything digital. If we don't buy it, they will go bankrupt. We got the money they want, we hold the power, not them.

Go look at your files and check if you installed the SkyUI mod. There is no way you would be a PC gamer and be happy having to go through console menus. Frankly at this point I am accusing you of lying in playing Skyrim with a mouse.

Seriously, who the fuck is still buying discs?

Where I live, physical game stores don't even exist any more 🤷‍♂️
I buy (and lick) physical Switch games because Nintendo sucks at backwards compatibility. That's about it tho, everything else is digital.

I was proving a point to people that were complaining about games not going on sale. Demons souls for PS5 was $49 on amazon plain and simple regardless of its digital or physical. Most people are buying the Disc version of PS5 going by sales numbers.

I guess that's the good thing about the shortage.

By the time I get a PS5 many games wi be much cheaper.

I didn’t say that either :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Although it does seem that Xbox gamers are more open to a digital library, now that you mention it - only anecdotally though.
"Xbox gamers are more open to buying digitally", err yeah sure 🤦
Gamepass wont change anything. We will continue to buy games. That option wont go away. Its just that now we are selective about what we buy. before it was risky option. nowday, you can test them as demo, and buy them if they like it.
Of course Xbox gamers will continue to buy games, but with MS's stated goal of a first-party game every quarter (which will stay on GamePass permanently), plus the hoovering up of indie games, the number of third-party games bought is bound to take a dive.
That is a huge misconception. I have both system, and i buy digital.

No one bothers with disc these days. These sale tracks dont even have number sales. And i will guarantee you that most people who buy these games, buys it digital.

Physical age is dying. Only those who scream about those physical disc buys it.

Its easy to have everything digital. i can download, and delete my games. For discs, they are waste of space. I dont have big cabinet like those disc collector. Its just too much storing those disc, and not using them when you are done.

I have around 30+ OG xbox discs, and i have no space to them in. I am using one of my clothes cabinet to store them. I dont want to do the same for the my ps4/x1s. even though used games are cheap, I dont want to bother carrying discs. Once you go digital, there is no coming back.
The reality is that disc sales are still a significant minority regardless of how much you try to paint it otherwise:

Nevertheless, the physical games market remains hugely lucrative, and actually grew last year. 18.2 million games were sold in boxes in 2020 in the UK, which is an increase of 2% over 2019.

And the split in disc sales are likely replicated in digital sales too.
