Created by Epic Games, Kite is a short film about a boy as he pursues his stray kite through a diverse and beautifully realized landscape. Everything you see is generated in real time by Unreal Engine 4 at 30fps. This demo showcases Unreal Engine large world features, photo reconstruction and procedural asset placement. Get Unreal and get going for free at www.unrealengine.com.
This real-time short film was first shown during Tim Sweeney's State of Unreal Engine GDC 2015 keynote. Just before the GeForce Titan X announcement (which this demo was running on).

Here's the presentation/making-of/behind the scenes and Q&A: http://www.twitch.tv/unrealengine/b/632598238?t=45m28s

The GDC presentation is now on YouTube: GDC 2015: Creating the Open World Kite Real-Time Demo in Unreal Engine 4

There must have been some kind of gravitational anomaly in that cave. Someone should check that out.

Genuinely my first thought was: "Why are they making a stupid pre-rendered CG video to celebrate Unreal?"
It looked just 'fake' and goofey enough making me not consider it real time.

Now lets pretend we can keep saying "but it will all look like some beefed up marine from some future deathmatch tournament with exo-suits and rail guns"

Holy shit.

Between this and playing the Order this morning, a am really finding it hard to comprehend just how far we have come since I was a kid.

And how far we still will go.

They claimed it's running real time, but we never see graphics match that level of fidelity from actual games that come out. They are cut-scenes, pre-planned, with a fair amount baked rednering. Fixed camera angles. We will only see a handful of games come close, God of War has typically been one because of it's fixed camera angles.

Apparently movies don't have fixed camera angles.
They know exactly what will be in frame, they don't have to worry about culling.

Very nice. If I had to nitpick, it would be some of the asset pop-in. Will this be available to download?

This with the minor pop in ironed out is pretty much the point I say enough is enough. If graphics don't get better than that, I'm alright with it.

Can't wait to play Elder's Scroll VI with landscapes like those.

Ok, more like Elder's Scroll VII.

Or IIX, actually.

I can never understand this sort of sentiment. We have movies like big hero 6 which keep raising the bar further and further and people are willing to say "that's good enough". Someday people will be playing games in VR that look as good as that and will likely be bemused by the fact that their priors were willing to accept less

Dat rock!

At first I wasn't that impressed, maybe with the scale of it, but overall it didn't look like a huge step forward.
But then came the close up at the rocks in the second half, that was pretty impressive. An open world were even the little things have such detail!
Question is, is it feasable for developers to fill a huge world with such detail?
