Unredacted reaction to PS5's reveal, "We have a better product than Sony does" - Phil Spencer 30% GPU advantage

First, their million-dollar-retainer lawyers don't know the difference between Superman and Spiderman, and now Xbox management can't even do basic math; how do you get a 30% GPU advantage from a 20% difference in TFLOP rating?

I knew Xbox heads were delusional, but I didn't know they were THIS delusional. No wonder their fans are the way they are.

He got the 30% figure by speculating (or maybe his engineers speculated for him) that due to the variable frequencies of the PS5's boost mode the PS5 wouldn't be able to use the entirety of its 10 teraflops and so its effective performance would be 9 teraflops. It's in the first paragraph of the second image in the OP. Obviously it turns out he was wrong...again.

Ever since the PS4 massively outsold the Xbox One, Microsoft seem to have had this weird idea that having the most powerful console means higher sales and so forgot that it was actually having a good quality first-party library of games that made the PS4 a huge success, not its performance advantage over Xbox One. The performance advantage (and lower price) were just the icing on the cake.

Their response was the Xbox One X: a console I owned and one, that if I recall correctly, launched without a single first party game to showcase its power! PS4 Pro was much less powerful but it was the system I played on the most because it had, yes, games! And that 2 TFLOPS performance advantage that the Xbox Series X has over PS5 has basically given us games that are identical on both platforms because most games on the system are from third-parties, developed with both systems in mind and sometimes led on the most successful one (i.e. not the Xbox Series X|S!). Sometimes, the Xbox Series X version has a small advantage, sometimes it's the PS5, but neither is consistently better or worse than the other.

What Microsoft need is not the most powerful hardware but three or four high quality first-party games each year. Once they've established that they can deliver then people will want to own an Xbox. Sony didn't get where they are today by just focusing on having the most powerful hardware. They got their reputation from their first-party games.

As someone who spends a lot of time writing executive memorandums and crafting e-mails to C-Suite, yeah, I can tell you this isn't surprising.

I've always admonished people about the argument from authority logical fallacy.

There are people on gaming forums who know WAY more than the average gaming executive and in many cases many of the inline staff when it comes to the history of the gaming industry, strategy, and historic sales.

Just like you can have hobbyists put together emulators that are better than platform holders (given largely time).

Phil Spencer graduated with a BS in Technical and Scientific Communications. You might as well call that bachelors of science a bullshit artist. You look at his career and there is no reason he should actually be CEO other than the fact that he outlasted everyone else.

He was a general manager in the early days of MGS. Then he became General Manager of all of Xbox Europe... Can you name me the high level of success that Phil Spencer had in Europe? He very quickly rose through the ranks to eventually become head of Xbox. You compare his resume with Jim Ryan's and it is a joke.
The only thing Phil has on Jim is PR skills. And it works. The amount of people that fall for the “good guy phil” persona is incredible to see even in here.

Remember that pathetic interview when Red Fall released?

On the spotlight try to be a nice guy full of shit. But behind the scene has a fanboy warrior mind where Sony is the enemy.
Imagine how stupidl all these fanboys look now who tried argueing Sony isn't the competition and MS somehow bypassed them to bigger and better things. Or how Nintendo is a direct rival. Jesus Christ all MS care about is that playstation traditional home console market when it comes to it.

This was pretty obvious to anyone with a functional brain.
Yet the fanboys and 'real gamers' aka platform-agnostics were in denial.

I'd like to see them respond to all this. Seems kindnof quiet in the Xbox camp.

I mean.. having the ingredients for a winning plan and turning those ingredients into a winning plan are two separate things

Let's hope he got it right so that we have strong competition in the industry and great games from ALL sides

Whats sad here is no company will ever trust using email to communicate ever again.

That and the number of posters (and i use that term lightly, since many are reeally just trolling) in this thread trolling who've never owned an xbox but are industry experts who are smarter than everyone is staggering.

As to what Phil said, it's not that shocking that he thought they had the better hardware, it didn't seem at that point that the ps5 would keep up.

Of course anyone with any sort of reasonable response will just get trolled with more "witty" anti xbox gifs.

Even the MS board of directors was telling him not to get cocky and he still couldn’t help himself lol. How’s that working out for you Phil.
Dude is making unreal money and is basically set for life. His worst enemy is a bunch of forum warriors.

I say this with admiration that he is today where I wish I was in my career and 99.9% of people will never achieve.

Bottom line is if he was fucking up bad enough, they would ask for his resignation; which they haven’t.

We need a real competitor, not someone who blows smoke and would rather acquire than make it happen. It's why SEGA leaving hardware was so hard for a lot of folks. They actually did compete with their own shit!

The craziest thing is that Phil somehow keeps persuading the board of directors to fund his insane M&As. Bethesda was too much, but the fact they green lighted Acti is crazy.

How would we know ? From the two consoles (excluding Series S) PS5 is the lowest common dominator , so if they target those specs we will never see the difference 🤡

But in this case, Mark Cerny did explain everything in the beginning and "people" laughed at him.

The same people who are smarter than everyone.

"It eats monsters for breakfast" and several other PR came from MS and Spencer.

Spencer and his influencers rejoiced with xbox community.

It's a cycle and Spencer is a suit disguised as a gamer and good guy.

That's silly. Yes they will. Courts subpoena email and other types of communications all the time in these cases. If a company suddenly decides to exclusively use Slack to communicate (or Teams in the case of Microsoft), the court will subpoena their slack information - although that is trickier.

There are email retention laws. For a company like Microsoft, probably close to 10 years.

I really fail to believe that they learned all of this only with ps5 reveal like everyone else.
How could they not know every sony move from the inside?! Wtf. Industrial spying 101

I think Sony made a much smarter decision going in. A much smaller chip with a faster gpu frontend + the [wildly misunderstood] continuous boost clock scheme. Paired with stronger lower level dev tools, PS5 pretty much matches the XSX give or take a few % in certain areas depending on the application.

MS chased teraflops and I think it's put them in a worse situation. I wouldn't be surprised if the decision not to do a proper mid gen refresh was at least somewhat informed by the difficulty of scaling up their chip.

With the PS5 hardware I get the feeling that pretty much every penny I spend on the console is paying for actual, effective, performance. They did everything they could to get that box as efficient as possible for the cost. With the XSX hardware I get the feeling that a significant chunk of the cost is just going to MS being able to say "we have 2 more TF"; despite the fact that relative to the PS5, those 2TF are effectively useless. And that's before we get to the XSS...

I think I posted this one before, but I think this would have been the smarter play (clicky for biggy):

Numbers don't lie, we saw the 4k v 1800p launch with the likes of Hitman 3 and now we're getting RT in gameplay with Forza which the same people couldn't believe would happen. It just took time but he was right, expect more from the big first party games after Forza.

The much smarter play would have been to not release a gimped console like the Series S.
