News US Soccer star Carli Lloyd receiving backlash for standing during national anthem

Carli Lloyd, one of the faces of U.S. Women’s Soccer, decided to stand for the national anthem prior to a game against Colombia on Monday night -- the first time she started in a game since March 2020.

Her decision to stand prompted a reporter to ask her about it Tuesday.

"I think the beauty of this team is that we stand behind each other, no matter what," Lloyd said in response. "And uh, some players decided to kneel, and some players decided to stand, and at the end of the day, we have each other’s backs."

Lloyd added: "Ultimately, we’re here to support one another in any way that we can, and that’s what’s amazing about this team."

Lloyd’s teammate Megan Rapinoe began kneeling for the anthem back in 2016, around the same time former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started the popular trend, which he used as a vehicle for peacefully protesting systematic racism and police brutality.

Soon after, more athletes in the NFL, NBA, and WNBA, among others, decided to follow suit.

The U.S. Women’s soccer team wore "Black Lives Matter" shirts during their warmup session Monday night, but Lloyd and midfielder Lindsey Horan decided to stand when the anthem began playing. Lynn Williams and Crystal Dunn, two Black players on the team, were kneeling with Rapinoe and the rest of the team.

Back in November prior to a game in the Netherlands, the U.S. women’s soccer team wore "Black Lives Matter" jerseys and they all kneeled for the anthem.

"We love our country, and it is a true honor to represent America. It is also our duty to demand that the liberties and freedoms that our country was founded on extend to everyone," the team said in a statement at that time.

"Today, we wear Black Lives Matter to affirm human decency. We protest against racial injustice and police brutality against Black people. We protest against the racist infrastructures that do not provide equal opportunity for Black and brown people to fulfill their dreams, including playing on this team," the statement continued.

"As the United States Women’s National team players, we collectively work toward a society where the American ideals are upheld, and Black lives are no longer systematically targeted," the team said, adding, "Black Lives Matter."

The reporters should do their job and ask the kneelers why they are kneeling for the USA's first female vice president. It's openly sexist and is becoming a pattern of dismissive behavior that marginalizes women in politics. Democrats are complicit in their silence if they don't ask for better behavior from our female athletes. This is the US soccer team who represent our nation on the world scene, not some racist hillbilly high-school team from rural Georgia or Louisiana.

What a joke world we live in. Honestly, people just need to start having some courage and standing up to this sort of (not so) indirect pressure. When asked why she stood, she literally should have said dismissively “you’re kidding, right?” or “seriously?”

I've read a bit of history, don't think national pride has ever become a taboo amongst citizenry. this maybe a new phenomena.

Social media is a cancer. Who gives a fuck if someone stands or kneels? If we're going to criticize people standing or kneeling during the anthem then we should also have a conversation about the ethics of people who are in the bathroom pooping, or people at home watching on their TV, while the anthem starts. Absolutely disrespectful to be wiping poop out of your booty hole while THE SONG plays.

We should make it so any time the anthem is played in the United States or elsewhere around the world, even if you can't hear it , you need to making a fucking decision whether to stand or to kneel during it. But you must choose. I don't think even being asleep while one is played somewhere is acceptable. Wake the fuck up and get on your knees bitch.

The flag doesn't give a fuck either way tbh, it's just cloth and stuff

For perspective, last year's Women's soccer finals drew 2.5x less viewers than the average episode of 90 Day Fiancé. Stand, kneel, whatever. Nobody gives a fuck beside sports writers that don't write about sports.

Good response. That answer should end all discussion.

What happened liberal lefties? I thought the point of life and liberty is having your own freedom and expressions? What's with the herd mentality like you're all Lemmings in a video game?

Straight white women aren't very high on the victim totem pole, especially when they are at all successful and/or attractive. She should check her privilege.

Not really. Nice hair though.

That's actually a bit of an unflattering picture of her. He looks better in the press conference linked in the OP tbh. Maybe not "hot" and has a bit of a schnoz, but she's not unattractive imo. (But she of course is no Alex Morgan. Few are.)

With the way fads are cyclical it’s just a matter of time for weak enfeebling displays of emptiness to stop being favored and shows of strength like not kneeling for anyone to be revered. The empty posturing for fake virtue signaling points will 180 and people will rightfully not give a shit nor remember who kneeled or stood at a soccer match

It now takes more guts to stand. Haha this world.

No one after caperdick is unique or brave for kneeling. No one is going to ask you why you kneel. They don’t give a shit.

Personally, the national anthem shouldn’t be played at sporting events. It’s so dumb. Even in an international setting it’s still kinda dumb. Why? It has nothing to do with your sport or your team.

Save it for things like Memorial Day, 4th of July, and the Olympics. Teach it in school as part of music class so people know the words, but leave it at that.

Honestly this clown world stuff is going to happen a lot more over the next 4 years. You won't be able to reason with any of them. Just sideline and watch the devastation lol
