User-Generated Content Is Seemingly A Huge Focus For PlayStation 5

According to the patent, Sony is introducing something called “scene tagging” that is used to |characterize user-generated content associated with gameplay information associated with video games.” The meta-information used with the recording or screenshots will allow other users to search for specific content.

The present disclosure describes methods and systems directed towards implementing scene tagging. In particular, scene tagging is used to characterize user generated content associated with gameplay information associated with video games. Exemplary user generated content include video recordings or screenshots from within the video game that pertain to events that have occurred. Corresponding metadata would then be used to describe substantive aspects about the user-generated content such as details about where the recording or screenshot was taken, who was included in the user-generated content, and what objects are found in the user-generated content. The associated metadata would 1) allow users to search among various uploaded user generated content and 2) search within portions of those use-generated content for particular sub-sections of interest. Furthermore, the metadata associated with the user-generated content would allow viewers to experience the same events that were recorded.

The new system it seems will work in tandem with Sony’s PlayStation AI. It makes sense to allow fans to pull user-generated content using the PlayStation AI, the AI, in fact, is created to help gamers pull relevant user-generated content such as gameplay videos and pictures.

The metadata “allow viewers to experience the same events that were recorded.” In-game help, connections with other users via user-generated content, seems to be a huge focus with next-generation games.

Sounds kind of like an evolution of the excellent-but-oft-ignored "share your controller" feature of PSN. I regularly play offline-only multiplayer games using it, essentially turning any game into an online multiplayer title (albeit with limitations). This could be pretty cool, but I wonder how games will utilize it in practice.

It would be VERY un-Sony like, but it almost feels like they are gearing up for way more elaborate "social media" capabilities for PSN. So when you hit save screenshot, the game is going to save a ton of metadata (like what level you are on, what menu you are in, what enemies are on the screen, etc) along with it so you can have a fully pre-tagged screenshot to upload.
