Using Sixaxis on your PC? Stay away from MotionInJoy

About a month ago, I installed MotionInJoy while trying to get my PS2 controller to work on my PC, but the program was so unprofessional-looking (the GUI is hideous) and filled with ads that I gave up on it. I ended up using an Xbox 360 controller emulator (not Xpadder, but I can't remember the name off the top of my head), and that works perfectly... no rumble, but I can live without that.

I never did uninstall MIJ, though. Great, now I find out I really can't :(

I used motionjoy + ps3 controller wired via usb for about a year but it would randomly stop responding during gameplay and I'd have to close / reload motionjoy to get the controller working again, also if I'd forget to press Disconnect and unplug the controller it would BSOD my PC when plugging it back in every time.

Since I already had a 360 I decided to buy the MS Gaming receiver and use one of my wireless 360 controllers instead, Best decision ever... Zero problems in the last 2 years.

Since I hadn't installed the drivers on W8 yet, I decided to see what would happen.

After seeing some of the offline links posted here, I tried just running from them without installing MotionJoy directly, but none had the drivers.

I used SandboxIE to run the installer first, and copied/pasted only the drivers to the normal-looking (not the fancy one) offline version's directory. I clicked on the driver tab, and it went into Admin Mode; the driver installed flawlessly.

I tested a game, and it worked.

Things I noticed:

  • Two of the DLLs installed became unused? DIFxAPI and MijFrc.
  • I do get an odd message about namespaces when using the offline version (haven't tried the online one, and won't).

Or save yourself a lot of time and stress and get the Xbox360 controller. Just plug it in and I works. If a pc game supports gamepads the it will automatically configure for the 360 pad. Simples.

360 controller is currently the best option for most controller-based games on PC.

You could also grab a USB classic controller adapter so you can use your CC Pro on PC. Works for Wii fight sticks, too.

True that. I bought the wired 360 controller 2 years ago and it works so damn well. Plug and Play you are done. Loads of games have that nice thing that you can switch between kb/m and controller without going out of the game and disconnecting it.

I've recently got GTA: VC and wanted to play it with a controller. I don't have a dongle for the 360 pad, so after some googling I found MIJ. Piece of shit, could't get it to work properly. Xpadder was terrible as well. though right now I can't remember which kind of problems I had with it. Then I've tried the Pinnaccle Game Profiler, which was even worse. It got stuck in an infinite loop of displaying messages and I found no way to break it.

Frustrated, I resigned myself to simply using the mouse. Which was way too fast in the game, but the sensitivity setting only affects the horizontal speed. Never-fixed bug since release, as I found out. But there's a tool to fix it! What a shame that it doesn't work most of the time.
So, when that tool finally worked, I just played a few missions, annoyed by long freezes at the begin and end of cusscenes (supposedly also a well-known bug), and the game crashed during one specific cutscene. I tried a bunch of stuff since then (compatibility mode etc.), but it always crashes at the same point. Fucking hell.

I'm gonna format the PC soon, maybe that'll help. Has anyone here played the game with a 360 controller?

This controller is much better than the 360 pad for the following reasons

A) It's d-pad isn't shit

B) It uses the Playstation layout, so it's just as good as the DS3.

The Logitech controllers give you the support of the 360 controller with the layout of a PS3 controller, it's easily the best of both worlds.

MotionJoy fucked up my wife's computer and I've yet to be able to get it to work.

What version of motioninjoy are you all using lol to get ads?

I have no ads and no popups....
Also no bluescreens.

It has worked flawlessly for years. (been using it since long before there was a signed driver for it)

Yeah I am wondering if the OP has other issues with his PC. Are you using the DS3 tools program because there is like one ad on the program but it isn't intrusive and it's as simple as opening up the program picking your settings and minimizing it.

OP probably has 15 toolbars and uses IE or visits some nasty scat porn sites.

How ironic. Earlier I said I did not have any ads popup but I loaded up MIJ just now and a damn popup appears. Yep. Uninstalling now and I'm going to try 360ce linked on this page.

I've never had a problem, though it does look unprofessional. I personally haven't gone back to my DS3, there are much better controllers for PC use available.

Logitech ones are the best. For some reason Microsoft basically said fuck you to all games that used DirectInput (pretty much everything circa 2006) and only allows very limited functionality for those titles.

I use it, it works, but yes: it's ugly and requires online. If anyone's got some other options that enables sixaxis with full 360 emulation, please tell!
It doesn't require online.

Actually the PS3 controller emulating a 360 controller is by far the best....because that is what I like! Obviously using something else is an option too.

I already stated that I never had any real problem getting it to work, I never thought it was a problem, but then I googled the sh.com site that started popping up, and I found it was MotionInJoy's doing. Uninstalled it, popup doesn't show anymore. I get that people can use it without any problems, and I'm starting to lean towards mere incompetence, and not malicious intent from the developer of this software. Again, I'm never bothered by ads in freeware, because I understand the requirement for funds to keep things going. Anyone on NeoGAF does. That's why I was never bothered, and I had it installed since summer. It's just that the drivers fuck with bluetooth dongles, they're a mess to get rid off, I never agreed to getting sh.com pop up when I reboot, I never agreed to ads of any kind outside of the problem, and the latter I have a problem with.

It's just through and through tastelessly executed. I have slight hope that this is rectified in the latest version, and maybe even analogue works with offline mode? I'm just not at all pleased with my experience, and I'm slow to trust such a shitty developer, even if they might have come a long way since. Maybe they're just more subvert.

OP probably has 15 toolbars and uses IE or visits some nasty scat porn sites.
Excellent addition to the thread. I think you misread my OP, because the only way I could've mentioned anal, would be to state how anal I am about keeping my computer clean.

Sounds like the OP got other problems on his PC besides MotionInJoy, pop up ads? Not even once in 3 years I've been using it.

And the complaining about ads in the program is pretty ridiculous. Not only does the guy offer a local tab, and a totally offline version, the damn program is free despite him having to pay for MS driver certification fees. Do you guys complain about ads on GAF?

UI is ugly, but it gets the job done, and it has lots of features, and yes the bluetooth drivers do have problems with some adapters, but removing them on the program (before uninstalling) always worked for me. And the only BSOD I've had recently (they did happen more frequently before but it's been fixed for a long time), was when I had 3 controllers connected at the same time. It BSOD once in a +/- 2 hour play session.

MotionInJoy is the best thing that happened to DS2/DS3. Amazing how I can even get the sixaxis motion sensors to work with flight games, or even to emulate the WiiMote.

Sorry to hear the OP has had some problems, but for me, MotionJoy is one of my most essential PC apps for years(currently using MJ and BT driver versions 0.7.1001). No issues for me at all, especially what the OP describes. Using my DualShock 3 via Bluetooth is amazing for PC gaming.

In fact, the only reason I'm typing this message right now is because my DS3 ran out of juice in the middle of a quest on my rig. As soon as it recharges, me, my DS3 and MotionJoy will jump right back into the action.
Just plug in your PS3 usb cord in your PC and play while it charges, just like you would do on your PS3.

ffs, I've already linked to sites saying the popup ad is caused by MotionInJoy, and the popup disappeared after I uninstalled it
Right, and I've used this for 3 years, only multiple computers, and know multiple people that do as well. The tool uses internet explorer to work, you could just have some malware related to it instead of the actual tool, you could have gotten it from somewhere else, it could be a hosts hack, it could be anything else. Something I'm sure though, is that it wasn't DS3Tool if you got it from the original source.

TLDR; OP is angry at free program which gives us best PS3 dualshock controller support because it is ugly, has problems with drivers and it connects to China (god damn communists)

Seriously OP chill out. Sure it looks kind of ugly but it is at the same time best software for PS3 pad which covers everything from BT to sixaxis and emulate perfectly as X360 controller (for games support). It is highly configurable so i can play game like X3 without any problem.

As of drivers. Problem is that PS3 pad never was certified to windows or anything other than ps3. For a reason all other software don't get you working analog R2/L2 and sixaxis. Lataly he bought cert for his drivers so you don't have to switch off driver autorization in safe mode to install his drivers correctly.

And yes his drivers can fuck up usb port or BT dongle but you can always uninstall drivers for those from system level and let windows reinstall them again. Also his drivers conflict with a lot of Logitech BT hardware so cable is where i use it.

Also there is offline version if you don't like support developer or you have shitty connection

Yeah Septimius, did you get your download from the official site? I've had two different versions of motionjoy without a single hitch. Also, what game is that avatar from/ I have to play it.

Pixelart of Ornstein from Dark Souls.

Oooh. Is there any guide on how to set that up? Would love to use it with DKCR on Dolphin.
Just choose the "Custom" profile and click options, go all the way down till you get to the "tilt" inputs, and assign them to some axis like Rz/Ry

MotionInJoy almost ruined my computer.

If you have a Logitech Wireless Mouse (or Keyboard), MotionInJoy can cause you a lot of problems. It's a common issue.

I have a Logitech Wireless Mouse. I tried a wired mouse recently but the way my desk is set up, it just didn't work. So I switched back. But my computer stopped recognizing my wireless mouse on the 1 USB slot.

It turns out it's because Windows thought it was a MotionInJoy device. I think the reason is that MotionInJoy over writes your USB driver for whatever USB slot you used for the PS3 controller.

I'm not very good at computers, so I'm not 100% sure what happened. I think there are a lot of forum posts if you look in your favourite search engine for it. I had to do some very weird and deep things to remove the MotionInJoy drivers. They do not get removed when you uninstall the program.

It worked well when I had it and I loved using my PS3 controller but everyone should be aware of the risks.

To me, MotionInJoy is a virus. It took over a part of my computer and even after uninstalling, the drivers would continue to reinstall itself whenever that USB was used. It took a lot of work for someone like me to get rid of it so I could use my wireless mouse again in that USB slot.

It's ugly, it has to be online to work, but it works fine for me. But I wish there was a less shitty alternative that emulated the 360 pad in the same way.
You know there's files to make it work offline right?

And I have had zero problems with it the last few years. The earlier versions gave some issues but I have it working wired and wireless via BT adapter. Flawless. No popups and certainly nothing Chinese.

Agreed, this was on earlier versions. There has been no issues like that on my wired or wireless Logitech products (I've uses Logitech exclusively for 10 years). That has not been an issue since the last 1 or 2 releases. I've done a simple install of the app and loaded the drivers with zero problems on my last 2 re-installs.

Not enough lols in the world... That's how Windows works, they get stored unless you tell it to delete them.

Thanks for laughing at me!
I already said I'm not very good with computers...

But I know that did not work for me. It would uninstall it temporarily. But when I used the USB port again, it would just reinstall itself. I had to delete the driver file from Windows/System32/drivers and do some other stuff I forget.

I understand it's a very loved program. But it has very big problems and people should know that. Not everyone is a computer expert.
