Slain was leaning slightly too much towards the style end of the style vs. substance spectrum.
Good way to put it. As a kickstarter backer I felt burned at first, just as I did by Mighty number 9.

Haha, then dive on in, arms flailing!Disagreements over tastes in metal, that's like my bat signal.
Came out recently on Nintendo Switch tooSeeing all of this awesome art is making me think I should go back and play Slain.
Fair. Valfaris aims to be very varied in terms of its encounters, but more on that in due course!Slain was leaning slightly too much towards the style end of the style vs. substance spectrum.
Hey everyone
Want to see what a Valfaris character looks like before it gets 2D-ified for its in-game appearance? Of course you do.
The triple-headed potbellied brute you see below is a Tomb Keeper. He keeps Valfaris' subterranean tombs nice and tidy by eviscerating anyone who dares stray into them.
TOMB KEEPER: BEFORE

As you can see, it's rendered here as a low-poly 3D model. After the initial sketch concept phase, this is how Andrew [Andrew Gilmour – dev druid/art warlock] likes to start working on Valfaris' characters. When he's happy with how it looks, he extracts the pixels and sets about bringing it to life in the game.
TOMB KEEPER: AFTER

And, after its preliminary three-dimensional fling, here's the Tomb Keeper in all his flattened (but still fully enfattened) 2D pixellated glory. A hulking colossus of an adversary that towers formidably over Therion.
I should point out the game is still deep in development so everything you see here is work-in-progress and may not fully represent how ass-kickingly awesome the final version will be.
Oh, and I don't think it's too late to wish everyone a happy New Year and all the best for 2018!

Valfaris will add to Slain's combat system, rather than replace it.Is there melee combat involved? Could you give some details? Thanks.
The genre of musicHeavy Metal as in the genre of music or the adult magazine? Not that it matters, granted I'm a huge fan of the magazine and this game looks amazing.
I fcking love this. Art again 10/10. Growing up with pixel graphics this is like a wet dream bois. Sometimes indie >>aaa. Especially when you get older and don't have much time to play.
When is this out again? Can't fuckin wait!!
looks like their old game with a "new" skin
Yes! This looks like a wonderfully good time. Thanks for sharing the video. I never got the chance to play Slain but I think this will be a day one purchase for me. Love the art style and always enjoy a well made side scroller. Looking forward to it!
Yeah man, I'm just as hyped - you can't beat some badass metal music to go along with the pixelated carnage!I'm on board for getting this when it releases. Awesome pixel art and badass metal music is always a winner for me.
Aye, that it does! If you haven't checked it out already, there's an awesome gameplay video available on YouTube here - it's definitely worth a watch!Damn, it looks amazing.

Maybe this has been answered or maybe it is not yet something you are publicly confirming/declining: physical release?
Boooooooooooo! That’s not what i wanted to hear. More like a ‘end 2018 release date’
Seriously though: take your time. Will buy for sure.
I can't speak too much on ranged vs melee, but there'll be 20 upgradeable weapons at your disposal throughout the game.
Some of the animations are fab as well (particularly enjoy using the energy sword and having the cleaved corpses walk a little bit before falling over.)
Tried the demo this morning before work. Pretty cool. Runs very well on my shitty laptop so I'll be interested to try it on my gaming PC. Very raw, feels like a new-age Turrican to me which is a good thing.. Seems like a demo is a great idea, hopefully it helps drum up interest.
Thanks man - I've passed on the feedback regarding the sword. Depending on the scenarios in game it is beneficial to use certain weapons over others though, so this could potentially just be a design choice for this particular boss.Just played the demo and came to mention this. Amazing. Kinda like this style more than Slain but thats just preference. Whats this horror/cyberpunk genre called has it a name?
Another thing I thought the sword is pretty OP. You can slay the junk gargoyle by just rushing in and hitting it like 10 times and then finish with the machine gun (forgot the name).
But other than that I really like the upgrade system too. Will buy Valfaris for sure (if I dont forget about it by the time it releases)
Looks pretty sweet. Thanks for keeping GAF in the know.Hi, all. We wanted to share more of the exciting details about Valfaris from our Steam Community hub. The latest update revealed new glimpses of Valfaris' areas and enemies, including the dense undergrowth of the Hive and industrial caverns of the Landing Pad.

You can find more GIFs and information in the update here. And if you haven't yet, the demo remains available to play from our Steam page.
I'm in, Slain had amazing art and they really tuned the gameplay after release. Let's do this!
