[Verge] Lenovo’s second SteamOS handheld is the Legion Go 2

May I ask why you don't want a dedicated console or TV or monitor setup?
I have a family, it's simply too much friction to sit down and look at a TV + had the sound everywhere in the living room. Might be difficult to explain, before getting the Steam Deck I played maybe for 10 hours total in 2023 on my PS5. I also do not want cables lying around, I only have AppleTV and WiFi router visible in my living room, even the printer is stashed in the cupboard.

Likewise on the family. I love my ps5 but I feel the same that sometimes handheld gaming is easier. I saw the device at Best Buy and I'm blown away. This thing is amazing. I really do want one but damn I'd need to finance this thin over 24 months at this point lol

Yeah, I use my Steam Deck or Legion Go S all the time while my wife or kids watch some TV that I would otherwise have 0 interest in.

I may wait for a price decrease in the future and just continue using my switch 2 and ps portal for now. But the steam OS device is what I am looking for at some point.

You could try to catch Lenovo Legion Go S Z1E on sale. Bunch of us did that during BF. Sometimes you can even get a Best Buy "like new" return on top of that.

Performance is only about 10-15% less than Z2E (if that).

I don't have a gaming PC, nor do I want one

So for me dropping 1099€ on this makes sense, even more so if I will get 350-400€ from selling my SD OLED.

Actually 1099€ for 8.8" OLED 144Hz VRR screen I get, I have no idea by Xbox Ally X costs 899€ though

It's true that any hardware becomes a much better value when it's not overlapping with something you already have. You could take either my pc or ps5 and let's face it - I'd be just fine and playing just as many games. Mostly the same games, too. So I spent a lot more than you to get two hardware sets with tons of overlap and very little benefit.

Yeah my conflict is that I have always been a PS fan but at this point, I only care where I can play most games for cheaper. In this case, I guess PC gaming makes sense, but I don't play games at my desk no way. So maybe a steam machine hooked to the TV and a portable like this would make the most sense.

Yup, I got an OG Legion Go open box from BB for like $599

Very worth, and IMO the Go 2 is not worth that price premium.

One of the things I like the most about steam is that I can log in on any hardware I want and play whatever it's capable of running. So I like having something portable, but the handheld form doesn't work for me. So I picked a tablet that I can kick up with a paired controller and I'm super happy with that. The tablet was for normal computing anyhow, and I didn't consider gaming performance at all. Just figured I'd play whatever it will run, which is a lot. If it was important to me, I could have looked into one of the stronger gaming tablets. It's great to have so much flexibility in the hardware. You do end up with little hiccups here and there, though. That's the tradeoff.

Yep, a bunch of us got Go S Z1E during BF as BestBuy had a good sale, there were bunch of "like new " open boxes AND PayPal had 20% cashback. It was like perfect storm of discounts.

I missed that one unfortunately. I'll have to hope that there is another sale on its way at some point.

It's set to launch in June.

One year ago, Lenovo became the first company besides Valve to announce a handheld with SteamOS instead of Windows. The result was the Legion Go S with SteamOS; no Steam Deck killer due to price and battery life, but a big step forward in performance and pick-up-and-play portability.

Now, Lenovo's doing it again — it's bringing SteamOS to the Legion Go 2, its flagship handheld with detachable Nintendo Switch-like controllers and the most advanced screen in a handheld yet. Lenovo plans to begin selling a SteamOS version in June starting at $1,199, the company just announced at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. Specs are otherwise the same.

Yes, that is quite the price tag and quite the wait before it arrives! Lenovo already launched the Windows version of this handheld at the end of October, so it'll already be seven-to-eight months old by the time SteamOS debuts. (With the Legion Go S, the Windows version only had a three-month head start.)

By then, it's possible we'll have handhelds with more powerful Intel Panther Lake chips — we've already seen Intel's existing Lunar Lake offering better performance in some games than the Legion Go 2's AMD Z2 Extreme can offer.

But simply switching from Windows to SteamOS can offer a notable performance boost, too, and the Legion Go 2 isn't just premium because of an AMD chip. As of this writing, it's the only handheld on the market with a variable-refresh-rate OLED screen to make games look amazing and one of the few that doubles as a tablet, with an excellent integrated kickstand and comfortable sculpted detachable wireless controllers for tray table play. There's even an FPS mouse built into one of those controllers, with a snap-on puck to let it glide smoothly across a table.

I called the original Legion Go "the Swiss Army knife of handhelds," and my time with the Legion Go 2 is much the same. I still find the newer Legion Go 2 a bit heavy and awkward with all the extra mouse buttons beneath my fingers as I grip, but there's no denying its versatility. Speaking of which: you can already load Bazzite onto a Legion Go 2 if you want a preview of SteamOS there. Everything seems to work, including the detachable controllers and RGB lighting.

Lenovo's also prepping the Legion Go 2 for Microsoft's Xbox Full Screen Experience for Windows 11; it's already possible to force-install it there, but last we heard it should officially arrive this spring.

I hope Lenovo or Asus make a Panther Lake handheld. Dat Xe3 GPU is a beast compared to the old grandpa that is RDNA3 on all other handhelds.

1. On the Hibernate part - I have tried it over the night with a game running, I forgot to take a note of the battery state in the evening (will do it tonight), so I don't know if there was a drain or not. Game (Oblivion Remastered) woke up with absolutely zero issues, however the save time added the whole night as if the game was running (Steam later on reverted from 68hrs to 61hrs). Given that it takes a few seconds to launch a game (much, much faster than on the Steam Deck) I will probably hibernate directly from Windows from now on.

2. The performance overlay showing FPS that I mapped to one of the back buttons was working two days ago and stopped working yesterday, I need to investigate.

Hibernate is working no problem, to avoid any problems I just hibernate from Windows, takes a few seconds tops to get back into the game.

Device is growing on me, hands got used to the shape and weight. Looks like I will be keeping this one. Suddenly knowing I can play newer games with less compromises than the Steam Deck makes me wanna play all sort of things.

Yeah, once I figured out that you needed to change it from sleep to hibernate it made a big difference. I was almost to the point of returning it just because I couldn't suspend/resume like I could on my Steam Deck. It's no where near as fast as it is on Steam Deck but still better than nothing. I'll be switching over to SteamOS once official support for it becomes available.

I've been going back and forth between this and the Legion Go S Z1E. Things I love about the Go S is the ergonomics and the fact it was about $600 than my Go 2 Z2E. The things I don't love about it are battery life, fan noise and that the VRR range is 48hz-120hz. The Go 2 has a beautiful screen, a wider VRR range - 30hz-144hz, better battery life and the fan doesn't get nearly as loud. Right now I intend on keeping the Go 2 and returning the Go S.

How are you guys justifying the cost? I feel like my wife may kill me if I get something for this price and I literally just bought an OLED TV for $1,400 during the Christmas sale for my ps5 pro, lol.

I got my Z2 version for 1099€. Same 32GB/1TB for Legion Go S with Z1E I couldn't find below 785€, so 300€ difference.

I really can't justify it lol. Similar to your situation, I spent $1,800 on a 77" Samsung OLED last September and then 3 months later I buy a handheld gaming system for almost the same price as my TV. I have until February 3rd to return either device but as it stands right now I'm keeping the Go 2 over the Go S simply because of the 8.8" OLED screen - it is that good.

Man, I just can't justify something like Go 2 considering I got my Go S Z1E for $530 (BF BestBuy Open Box) - 20% PayPal credit. Like there is no way for me to pay 3x for 15% (if that) more performance and better screen / battery life.

Selling my wife on a $500ish device when Steam Deck went to the kids is one thing but $1200 is a whole other animal, lol.

Lol I know. I just recently got a Switch 2 and to go back and say hey I might go ahead and grab a PC/steam handheld as well... I don't know. I might just have to wait on this one.

Had it for 2 weeks now, it's staying. Some general thoughts:

1. Windows being Windows is not a problem most of the time. I update drivers every few days, have a small issue once every 3-4 days. So far I had only one game crash once, it's less than on the Steam Deck e.g. there Oblivion Remastered crashes a lot due to memory limitations.
2. Hibernate mode works without a single hitch - it drains battery way less than similar mode on the Steam Deck, over there it's approx. 10% per 24hrs, here it's almost non-existent. Resumed from Windows, resumed from the game itself - 10-15 seconds and you are playing.
3. You get used to the weight and ergonomics. I sometimes move my palms a bit lower to have the corners in the middle, when I don't need to quickly access the triggers. Similar the thumb sticks - they were feeling really odd at the beginning because I was used to the Steam Deck ones, now it's not an issue at all.
4. Thermals and fan noise are great so far on Performance mode - it's audible when plugged in because the system takes more power than on battery, but it's not louder than a Steam Deck in a similar game.
