Verizon sells Tumblr for less than $3 million after acquisition for $1.1 billion in 2013

Verizon has agreed to sell Tumblr to WordPress owner Automattic Inc. for an undisclosed amount, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Verizon, which first acquired Tumblr in 2017 after it purchased Yahoo, started to explore a sale earlier this year. Automattic reportedly bought Tumblr for less than $3 million, according to Axios, a stunning drop in value from the $1.1 billion Yahoo paid for it in 2013.

“Tumblr is a marquee brand that has started movements, allowed for true identities to blossom and become home to many creative communities and fandoms,” Verizon Media CEO Guru Gowrappan said in a statement. “We are proud of what the team has accomplished and are happy to have found the perfect partner in Automattic, whose expertise and track record will unlock new and exciting possibilities for Tumblr and its users.”

Although it makes sense. Tumblr was once a hugely influential force in the blogging and social media sphere, but it become less so under Yahoo and then Verizon’s ownership. Meanwhile, platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube moved to fill the void and become much larger cultural forces as a result. Still, Tumblr does have a very active and dedicated community.
That became very apparent to Verizon leadership last year when Verizon decided to ban adult content on the platform back in December. Tumblr acted as a safe haven for many LGBTQ members who used the platform to explore and express their sexuality and to find an online community that shared those interests. The decision to ban all types of adult content led many to boycott the site, and the ban alienated a significant portion of Tumblr’s user base. There are no plans to reverse those decisions, Automattic Inc.’s CEO Matt Mullenweg told the Journal. Instead, Tumblr will act as as a “complementary” site to WordPress.
1) Acquire Tumblr
2) Ban adult content
3) Lose entire investment
4) ??
5) Profit

Depends what was Verizons tax situation like? This may have been calculated, destroy a platform and bonus tax write offs.

Wow. I still have no idea what Tumblr is. I know it is a thing, but I never interacted with it once.

Good for the creators. Bad for , I guess Verizon.

It's an advertiser issue. Nobody wants to advertise on a site that won't protect content. Even NeoGAF was that way at some point, if you recall certain periods where cursing was censored. But honestly for $3mln, this looks like an acquihire and they really should just let the porn back in.

The whole site is just women telling everybody that they are lesbians.

One of the most retarded business moves I've ever seen in my entire life. It's hilarious.

You don’t want it as a containment zone?
Nah we’d all be ok.

The same fears were expressed around the internet when Gaf imploded. Nobody wanted the contagion to spread to their little corner of sanity. Luckily the numpties founded their own Numptyland, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

Reckon the same would happen here. Kill Tumblr and no doubt TumblEra would be founded. A place where the crazies could roam crazy and free-ish.

Consider the former is leading to some pretty horrible things happening to kids and the latter is a fetish around kids I'd say that's a pretty big it. If those things aren't a big deal to you that says something about you.

Who would have though that taking popular platforms, gutting their content, and replacing it with PC standards would have come to this?

Fetish around Kids? WTF are you talking about. Sorry I'm not deep into this whole gender thing. And please don't start so early in implying what kind of Person I am.
so please tell my what big of a deal you mean in more than one sentence.

*sigh* honestly I would but you've given no indication so far that you're worth the effort, no sign of any intention to have an honest discussion so I'll leave you to it.

Unfathomable that they don't try reversing course first. The news generated from that would get so many people browsing their sight its almost absurd. But regardless, I bet the purchaser will do just that. Of course they'd say there's no plans to do so before ink dries and plans are finalized to avoid giving the seller incentive to back out or renegotiate the price. Even if the purchaser is afraid of being branded a porn peddler, you can still change course and sell for a handsome profit in short order.

He makes a point. It’s not really that effective to discuss such a topic with one sentence replies and assumptions of the one asking.

Don’t have the time or will to explain, fine, you’re not obligated at all. But don’t fall in the trap of assuming people are whatever because of a question. That’s disengenious (is that the right word?).

It could have been the greatest furry porn* site since DeviantArt but they then banned that and Twitter took it instead.

*It had great original non-creepy content but my god.....the furry/hentai art...it took over.

He asked for examples and I gave some. He then said 'is that it?' - implying that he knows the topics and doesn't think they're much cop. Or he's being disingenuous and just dismissing something while knowing nothing about it. Neither option is someone worth the effort.
