Check in, everybody!

Tried it at Club Sega Shinjuku West today, saw some fellow GAFfers making the rounds, getting their new cards and signing in.

Observations!

-Wow this looks lovely. The game is running in an HD widescreen mode. The screen they are using is completely awesome, looks like a HUGE, flat CRT.
-Character motion looks really smooth. The facial mocap looks heaps better than anything we've seen before in the VF series.
-Background are like woah. There was one in a canyon with Anasazi cave dwellings (or something) that was pretty amazing.
-Character models are really good; really insane facial details on some of them. It's like the guys have photorealistic skin with pores and shit while the girls are more DOA-style smooth (either that, or they all have really good skin). El Blaze's model is FUCKING PHOTOREALISTIC, it's totally creepy and I love it. Oh yeah, the girls are hotter, but Vanessa got her skin pigmentized (wtf?). Aoi got reconstructive surgery. Sarah does not look like a dumpster ho.
-Lau looks like he's about eighty years old and is about to die.
-Character voices are still extremely annoying. LION LET ME PUNCH YOU IN YOUR CROTCH. "You'd better take me seriously!" Argh.
-There's a new girl in the roster who uses some sort of Kung Fu. Snake or crane or something, I'm not going to pretend to know.
-El Blaze is a stone cold pimp but nobody is playing as him :(
-Yu Suzuki was in the bathroom and told me they are making a Mega Drive version first that will come with an "expansion cartridge that will put Virtua Racing's to shame." Just wanted to make sure you were reading there and not skimming.
-Character customization is rad. I saw Vanessa with a gas mask, Bald Jeffry (looks like Marduk!), Dredlocked Jeffry, Angel-wings Sarah.
-There was a "VF.TV" monitor attached. The system is amazing. This was a large plasma screen that displayed stuff like the current round (with running voiced commentary!); while the game runs in a window, you'll see a schedule in the bar to the left and other information to the bottom. During a VF.TV broadcast I saw:
-- The current matches (of course) with commentary
-- An interview with Kataoka
-- A list of recent players, showing their customized fighters making cool poses
-- Commercials for Ryu Ga Gotoku (oh yeah!)
-- Virtua Fighter News (I assume this will be updated daily)

Gameplay-wise, I'm not even going to go there. I used to be okay at VF3, but playing VF4 in the arcades in Japan was utter humiliation so I gave up on it and concentrated on mastering the Japanese art of drinking instead. I guess my final impression is "The graphics are awesome and VF.TV is awesomer."

Some of the folks there will be writing lengthy English impressions later on, so I trust it to them! Please add any English gameplay system comments if you have any!

NOBODY was playing Jacky or Wolf :((((

Wolf looked awesome in the rolling demo though, same with my man Jeffry. Tecmo is to boobie rendering technology as AM2 is to hairy dude rendering technology.

This is actually kind of surprising, Wolf is a pretty popular character in VF4

VF.TV = gotham tv = practically confirmed for 360
Most popular market for VF: Japan
360 sales in Japan: small
PS3 likely sales in Japan: pretty good

Sega seems to be playing it safe by publishing, but not developing, many games on the XBox. I'd be surprised.

How is the gameplay different from #4?

Japanese companies are usually willing to bite the bullet and make Xbox versions of shit if they know it will sell in the USA. I don't think VF does particularly well in the West though. :( Could someone give me some sales numbers to prove me wrong?

Also, is Lindbergh DirectX-based?

i think evo sold around 450,000 copies in america

respectable i think

Didn't VF4 PS2 actually do better in America than Japan? I don't have access to the numbers but I am pretty sure.

its possible, theres not much of a need for vf on home consoles in japan. theres atleast two machines in any game center you go to. Or atleast there was during the height of its popularity.

Crap, this sounds nifty. Why did they have to make Vanessa less black, I donts understand.
-Yu Suzuki was in the bathroom and told me they are making a Gizmondo version first, one where you fight other dudes with prearranged commercials.

somehow i dont see those showing up at a golfland or the like in usa :( but you never know with all these HD kiosks and what have you...

I doubt it's a CRT, as (RP)CRTs that big tend to be interlaced, and also tend to need a ton of maintaining, especially if it's in a high traffic area. The movement of people, then again someone bumping it, could knock it out of alignment, making convergence a huge issue.

What are the alternatives? The screen was as bright as a CRT and viewable from all angles...

For those arguing sales numbers, it should be noted that VF4Evo in the US was 20 bucks, and in Japan it was 60 bucks. :)

Please be a PS3 launch game, please be a PS3 launch game.

No way it will. It will still be huge in the arcades by that point so no need for a console version. : (

-Yu Suzuki was in the bathroom and told me they are making a Dreamcast version first to apologize for screwing everyone with VF4 on PS2. Just wanted to make sure you were reading there and not skimming.

:lol

I notice no one can say shit about the visuals when they see it in person. The haters are on notice.

Here's the info you want.

- tons of new stages now. Lots of remade stages from VF2. If you want to know, yes, Shun's stage is back, but no bridge. There's also Jeffry's stage from VF2 remade. All of the stages look fucking AMAZING. One stage in particular is in a jungle setting (I have no idea whose stage it is), but it's surrounded by trees in the foreground, and in the background you can see giant waterfalls surrounding the area (think FFX's FMV sequences but without the spirits floating around). Other stages include a snowy mountain, an excavation site (complete with muddy water that ripples according to the character's movements), and a night time city. Anyone who dares compares VF's stages to DOA is going to be shocked. the difference is literally night and day.

- Eileen (new monkey girl) was playable but she wasn't complete. She has a lot of special movements using P+K+G and certain directions. u/b+P+K+G does a backflip, b+P+K+G does a spin back, f+P+K+G does a hop forward (like a monkey, natch). Her moves are pretty fluid but I couldn't do any of the really cool moves that I saw the CPU do.

- There's a new machine called VF Terminal, which is basically VF.net in the arcade. You still need a VF.net account, but instead of using your cellphone, you can now use the terminal to customize everything. You put in 100 yen ($1) and you get about 300 "points" (or seconds) to do everything you want. Pretty good deal, but I'm guessing you'll want to wait till you can customize a lot before using the terminal.

- As for the gameplay, from the previous location test it hasn't changed much save for the movement system. The new sways used to be u/f_d/f+P+K+G, but now they're just a double tap up or down. The old evade is still like VF (tap up or down once) but now doing a double tap will make you go further. It's pretty intuitive now.

- Someone I know was complaining that a lot of characters (Aoi, Jeffry, Wolf, Vanessa) are now buffed because of the slower throws. Basically, moves that were throw-counterable in VF4 aren't anymore because throws are slower, so these characters have gotten their moves powered up a lot.

FYI, I played Eileen almost exclusively today. 0 - 16! HOORAY! :(

Maybe when this title hits arcades I will start playing it.

I have always been interested in the series, and have played most of them, but I always suck haha. Maybe starting at the same time as others would help a bit...

Pick up VF4: Evo and go through the tutorial mode. Seriously, it's really straight-forward, explains all the basics that are essential in a 3d fighter, and anyone whose gone through all the tutorials will at least be a decent player. My friend had never played a VF game before until VF4 but after going through the tutorial and playing against me for a few months were pretty much on competitive ground.

Exactly how big was it?

I'm guessing if it was over 40 inches, either LCD (doubtful) Plasma (Your bright comments lead me to say this), or some microdisplay (DLP, [RP]LCD, LCoS). Nothing sounds like it would be exactly what you're saying, so if it's 32-36 inches it may indeed just be a massive CRT...

Color me curious, get any more info you can on it, and get back to me, please. You wouldn't wanna deprive me a night of sleep now, would ya? :)

Sounds like a plasma to me based on the viewing angle and bright comments.
