Videogames market grows on Mexico, Xbox remains as the leader with 57.9% market share

Xbox-mex.png

Numbers reported by the firm The Competitive Intelligence Unit on the video game market in Mexico indicate that the industry expects a significant growth for this year, but not exactly we owe it to the consoles, rather mobile devices.

According to the company, by the end of the year the industry would grow by 13.3% over the previous year with a value of 22 thousand million pesos, that thanks to a bigger number of users with smartphones with midrange specs and lower prices compared to home consoles

The distribution of the percentages of Gamers on each platform is as follows: 71% play mobile games and the remaining 29% is divided between PC and consoles, reaching, according to the report, "a weighting of 26% for home consoles and 15% for computers. "

Xbox is still the leading platform in Mexico with a 57.9% market share, PlayStation fell from 29.3% to 24% and Nintendo increased from 14.3 to 18.1%.

I remember Gears 3, especially later on in the game's life, had loads and loads of Spanish speakers. The series is crazy popular over there.

Wow Xbox sure is dominating in Mexico for some reason...

I'd be curious about the Canadian console market share, especially since Xbox has been a lot cheaper than PlayStation for a long time.

Aw, Mexico stealin' all our cheevos.

Aren't PS4s like crazy expensive over there?

EDIT: Oh no wait, that's Brazil.

Sony product pricing in Latin America is historically bad. Like they have the idea that Sony is a status brand or something.

Wait, does that mean handhelds are making up 59% of the remaining 29%? Or am I reading this wrong?

I worked in a game store in south Texas and I can tell you firsthand that our Mexican customers LOVE Xbox. Like a diehard passion. I've never seen anything like it it was incredible.

Xbone is cheaper here, have more bundles and promotions, last Christmas you could get an Xbone for the half price of a PS4

Also 360piracy is big here , meanwhile PS3 is scarce or no exist

Nintendo had a big fanbase here but Sony and MS are their share, if NX becomes something good surely Nintendo will surpass Sony.

Microsoft made a good job trying to gain the trust of the consumers... something that neither Nintendo nor Sony did. I remember that the ps2 launched officially in Mexico around 2005. And Nintendo... well everything Nintendo is overpriced here.

Also, if someone could link the original source, it would be great. Atomix don't deserve clicks.

Not an official source by any means but on Amazon.ca the best selling games and consoles are usually PS4 ones.

So I think Sony has the market share in the Great White North as well.

Mexico has been a secret top 5 country for Xbox since the 360.

Sony falling though is unexpected. Wonder what Canada market share looks like.

Mexico has been a secret top 5 country for Xbox since the 360. Really popular there since Sony didn't officially launch the PS3 until 2009.

Is there a reason for such late hardware launches? No market there or something?

Huh, I wonder what this could be attributed to.

Might have to do with the price of the console itself, plus the strength of the brand here. While the console normally is around $6k-7k pesos (even then, cheaper than a brand new PS4, which costs around $9k), you can easily find refurbished consoles for less than $5k pesos. In fact, I saw one at around $4k today.

Btw, the conversion rate is around $20~ pesos for a USD.
Actually, the Xbox is the only console that is not overpriced, comparatively speaking. The Wii U sells for around $8k (madness, considering it's the freaking Wii U), a New 3DS for around $5.5k and I mentioned the PS4 price before

I remember this as well. Wonder if GoW4 will take off in the same way.

While I barely watch tv now, I'm pretty sure that TV videogame commercials are rare here. With that said, just last week I saw a Gears 4 ad quite a few times AND on over-the-air channels (the rest of the commercials are normally aired on paid TV). That should tell you something about the franchise over here.

Huh. I pretty much never read content in Spanish, so I'm in the dark regarding current spanish publications. Any reason for that?

It is indeed, it's one of the most popular gaming franchises here

The Xbox Mexico team is awesome we are very good friends and I can tell you that they have a lot of passion and love for the games and the gamers, they make a lot of events during the year, also their Spanish localization kicks ass

Mark my words Gears 4 it's going to be huge here

Wait the XB1 has already reached the Wii? It'll be the 2nd best selling console there by the end of the year.

Not surprised. Mexico is a land of FIFA and COD, two franchises historically tied to te Xbox brand. It also has to do with MS correctly pricing of their consoles as well as good bundles, something neither Nintendo nor Sony do.

Pretty much this, both Nintendo and playstation always get the premium price.

You could go to a game store and still manage to snag a brand new PS2 until a year ago or so easily. I'm pretty sure there are places that still have PS2's in stock. Obviously, not that many, but they exist

FIFA it is indeed other popular retail franchises are Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty, fighting games (mexican gamers love fighting games)

Now you got me curious about the numbers that KoFXIV did, considering how well-known that franchise is over here.

Microsoft manufactures games here, directly, so games can be gotten for cheaper than PS4 or Wii U games, which are usually all imported. You can get XBO AAA games for around 30% cheaper than PS4 AAA games.

That together with the fact that the Mexican gamer tends to be dudebro-ey and the aggresive appeal that the Xbox has for that demographic makes for an easy win.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Don't forget that Xbox Mexico always makes special events the entire year like private events, games launch parties, tournaments etc

Doesn't surprise me at all. Back when I used to work in the industry almost everyone from Mexico I ever met preferred Xbox. They also seemed to love Gears of War

Thanks for the links!

Huh. I pretty much never read content in Spanish, so I'm in the dark regarding current spanish publications. Any reason for that?

Many reasons actually. I'd write some of them in spoilers so we don't deviate from the main topic too much:

I used to be a member of Atomix foros. Atomix is now a blog like Polygon or Kotaku, but they used to be a magazine + internet forums + website + TV program (briefly) + a VG news app (also briefly). So as you can tell they were pretty big back then. A lot of changes in administration and incompetence from the owners of the brand lead to the destruction of most of it, right now they are just a blog and I believe they have a podcast-like thing going on... unfortunately the current members of the staff are assholes: their current chief editor has said that gamers who don't buy stuff day one are kind of worthless... also, they have sided with all anti-consumer measures that have appeared in recent years in the industry and think that people who complain about them just like to whine as if we are some kind of spoiled brats.

The worst thing is that the community used to be pretty great. Their forums used to be similar (albeit less strict) than GAF, with tons of great users and acceptable moderation. But as the magazine changed staff regularly, the administration of both the site and the forums also changed usually accompanied by a less strict moderation and one of the owners liked so much the money from ads that they allowed the community to transform into a 4chan like site, with people harassing other users, scammers in their trade subforums and allowing well recognized trolls and fanboys to moderate the forums... it became a toxic mess.

Every time the magazine editors changed the older ones got banned form the forums and some of them started to speak about the working conditions in the magazine: Some collaborators didn't get pay for their reviews, they had to review games for the magazine using roms because when a review copy arrived to their offices the owner will take it to his house to play it instead. They hired people who actually took reviews from the internet and copy&pasted them into their magazine. One of the websites they stole content from was the Spanish site Meristation. Every time one of those things came to light the forums became a graveyard as many users would be banned for asking for clarification of those issues.

Atomix was a great community that was ruined by the assholes who administrated it.

Errr no, Ps4 its more expensive now than when it launched. Xbox one actually got cheaper.

What? No, you're totally wrong. The Xbox is cheaper but they actually raised the MSRP, the PS4 had a huge price drop at major retailers because they dropped the insane MSRP but it is still a bit pricier (10%-20% usually).

Off topic but where's the best place to buy consoles in Mexico?

I presume Sansborns and Sears aren't the way to go. There's a Game Planet near where my wife works, there?

Was hoping to pick up a Pro at launch(& maybe a xbox one S) , will it arrive day and date with the US? I'm from Ireland so I'm used to paying a bit more.

Just moved here recently.

It is pretty much a meme that Gears online is overrun with Mexican fans. Would not be surprised if it is more popular than Halo there.

Honestly thought the US, UK and Australia were Microsoft's only successful markets. Well, colour me surprised.

The price + piracy thing is a big factor though I assume. Piracy was a huge factor in PlayStation's success in Australia way back with the PS1.
