He paid you back in hard cash woman!

Only three years late. =(

This is true! But by that point adding "ripped me off" to "Axen" had already become muscle memory. ;)

It's one of those classic #vidgames memes, though, along with Che stealing O.pa's Saturn games.

No wonder some of of the people I most respect in this industry comes from a common forum. How was it? I suppose the tone was quite different from GAF.

(If anyone cares, I still in exile from gaf, just wanted to say "Hi" to Justin and try John anowledges he has a PM from me (sory for bothering you so much))

Heh I was gonna do this after the other thread about 8-4. Gaz beat me to it. Small correction first; I don't work at EA. I am in game dev though. Anyway, it's good to see so many #vidgamers here that I didn't realize were here. Definitely join the 1up club page that I set up so we can keep in contact. Sinz was also trying to organize a contact mailing list to keep people in touch and see where people have been lately. The irc channel still exists if anyone wants to stop by. Great job gaz on the write up. I can't believe that 9/11 is around. That was a surreal day and the last time I was in Japan. It's funny that you should put that up now cuz I just found my passport last night and I was looking through it and noticed the arrival stamp of 9/11/01.

In its heyday #vidgames was way more chaotic, unstable, and uncivilized than GAF.

I was a regular there for a good while a decade ago and I certainly don't remember it being so GAFfish. The regulars understood that multi-console gaming was the way to go. If it were like GAF, we'd have had constant screaming from Playstation owners that Saturn sucked, and so on.

if it wasn't for finding a post in r.g.v.n titled "What's wrong with #vidgames 10 years ago (!), I wouldn't be in a barcelona hotel bar right now, writing blog posts and watching our video team upload assassins creed footage and eating semi-decent mexican food.

thanks for the post, gaz.

No way, really? Tell us more!

You had me write a 'letter' for the first ish of IG. Glad things are going well for you in Japan.

Yeah, this place is crawling with old #vidgames folks. :)

Not really, right...? Or did Nintendo throw him in jail for leaking Zelda Tactics info?

I hear Zelda Tactics is coming for the Wii now... I guess Pris wasnt lying.. LOL!!!

I actually LOL'ed when I read that... because I forgot about it until I just now..

on a side note, I remember one time I was arguing with IIID about something in the channel and I told him to shut up and go animate the letter Q or something... because he was big into Maya, and sure enough about 10mins later I get a DCC request and when I open it, it was the letter Q bouncing around the screen...

Sucks about Darkfact... I actually spoke to him the night of the accident. He had called me asking if I wanted to go out on the town, and I said no because I was waiting for my girlfriend to call; strangely, she never did. That was probably my first, "might that have been me?" moment. I miss the kid. Good guy, cool friend, told me all sorts of fun stories about old school Gamefan.

God damn, man, you just bummed me the **** out. That was so... surprising when it all went down. Guess that's why they call 'em accidents. I still remember seeing the newspaper clipping and going "that's not him... naaaaaaah, just a coincidence."

If it weren't for living with DaveZ, DaveT and Smak in that tiny ass little one bedroom place in the Mission, I would never have been introduced to the magic that was #vidgames. And I probably wouldn't have had the opportunity to work with Shane, Christian, Che and John. Thanks for the good times, guys.

Here's a post from me defending #vidgames on USENET.

A Younger me said:
Well, the occassional SF2 stuff even annoys me, but even without
knowledge of the latest Japanese games (or even the latest games)
I have no problem holdinng a conversation there. And yes, it does
help if like the Playstation (and Saturn) since those two systems
are most of the conversation, and no advocacy or system bashing is
allowed. Saying "Sxxx Sucks. I hate that system!" will usually
get you kicked and doing it repeatedly will get you banned. (That's
probably what happened to those people who got banned "for no
reason.") #vidgames is not rec.games.video.* -- there's a lot less
pointless "mine is better" crap.

I then post the #vidgames FAQ from that time period.

Same attitude drew me to GAF, although GAF has lost a lot of the evenhandedness that it once had.

Haha. Sounds like the modern day equivalent of "why don't I get ops??"

What was your /nick?

EDIT: Milhouse -- Justin left Japan years ago. He was in the US for a couple of years and then finally went back to the UK. He still posts here, but nobody knows his username. :)
Heh, I used to ask for ops from time to time. Never got it. Had voice, never said much. I wasn't particularly popular on there, and I certainly wasn't there as long as others. I used a variety of nicks at the time: Duane, KiiLA, MasterBaiter. I was mostly ignored unless I was Sega-bashing. It probably didn't help that I don't really like talking about video games too much in chats. No one remembers me. :( PEACE.

EDIT: Reading Ignatz's post reminds me that I was probably still more into usenet at that time than web forums or IRC. I wasn't all that popular on there either. Not like DarienA and Marty. We have a lot of notable posters on this forum. This place collects garbage...I mean...nah, I mean garbage. ;)

#vidgames 4 life, PEACE.

Also, videosource ripped me off!

RIP Darkfact. I still think about that kid and wonder what he'd do if he saw the MGS4 videos from TGS.

I owe much to #vidgames.

I'm indebted to #vidgames and I never even visited it. Without the help and influence of numerous #vidgames members, both direct (eXxy!) and indirect (the creation of Gaming-Age, those who worked on thegia.com), I wouldn't even be close to where I am today.

Man I miss Darkfact myself. I have a picture of me, Sinz, Skip, Pris, Darkfact and Gaz in a bar somewhere at Universal City Walk hanging up in my game room. Heh I also remember one time when we both were in Japan, Dan was staying at Pete's place. I was over there, but Pete wasn't around. I think he had already left and Dan was just crashing there an extra day. Anyway it was late, and we were flipping through channels and we saw the oddest porn that was on Japanese tv. It was some european flick that took place in WW2 and instead of the normal German Kaiser helmet, there was a dildo attached on top. We just died laughing and it was an in-joke between us there on after. Damn I miss that guy.

Oh snizzap, partay time.

Speaking of, I will never, ever have as kick ass a New Years as when Sam, Dave, Dave, Marty, Priz, myself and... shit, I can't remember who else MGSed our way up on top of the SEGA building to watch the fireworks over the Bay. Z and I still talk about it every once in a while. 'Twas magic, I tells ya.

I can't believe Gaz failed to mention me as one of the founding fathers of Gaming Age. I only ran the editorial side of the damn site from day one :)

I miss the #vidgames days, though I was pretty much gone by about 2000. I still credit it for legitimately getting me into the industry (thanks John and Mark!). Nothing like sitting up all night working on GA and chatting with a bunch of people from all over the world who are just as nerdy about games as you are.

Good times.

I totally remember that New Year's. Ya, that really was a great night. One that I probably won't ever forget.

I missed out :(

Well #vidgames has certainly impacted my life and thanks to the GAF forums my potential career has absolutely skyrocketed and I've managed to meet fantastic friends such as Demi and Gazunta (and met WAAAAY too many freaking awesome people). I'm still not done yet, lots of work to do! Gaz we need to talk. :)

I apparently fell asleep in mid-laugh? I feel like I'm forgetting someone, though, was there anyone else there besides you and Pris?

Or Brady. Or Dennis Day! Or me. Some day the true story of how Gaming Enthusiast Online became Gaming Age will have to be told.

Isn't much more I can say about #vidgames that hasn't already been said.

I owe a hell of a lot to #vidgames. Everything I've done in gaming and at CNN started off with #vidgames and the great people inside it.

My favourite quote:

<Gazunta> I sit in front of my computer ALL ****ING DAY AND ALL ****ING NIGHT, CHURNING OUT HACK PIECES OF CRAP LIKE A ****ING FACTORY

How far we've come eh Gaz?

...WTF is there a "Yiff Hentai Art" ad on the bottom of my screen here?

Anyway, as much as I loved #vidgames, I'm glad I stopped going when I did. Job + #vidgames would've left no time to actually play games and try to, like, do other stuff.

Oh, hey - is the "Ant" that posts on here the same one from IRC? He's the guy that brought me to #vidgames from AOL, and I'd be interested in knowing what he's up to.

Gaz, unless you updated the list in the time I took to read the whole thread, you left out Brad "rudds" Shoemaker (GameSpot), Peter "PeteB" Bartholow (dunno), Andrew "Reno" Alfonso (teaching English in Japan and also prolific freelancer for IGN), Stephanie "sebab" Wukovitz (recovering from pancreas and kidney transplant), Curtis "Necromage/Citrus" Bryan (doing some game program at a uni in Arizona), Antony "Ant" Nguyen (???????), and Dan "Shoe" Hsu (you know where he is).

I'd love to know what's up with Hazama... least I know he's alive; saw him at the last E3 (or was it the one before?).

Roushi is still a Marine I think. He seems to have been playing and writing up PS2 games all summer on his LiveJournal (roushimsx)....

I bet pris will post in this thread soon enough...

He forgot a lot of us! I see how it is, Gazzo, I see how it is.

It is really cool to get an update on what everyone's doing these days, though.

If you include Steph you have to include Scott 'Oppressor' LeGrand and Doug 'Thunderbird' Engel. Scott was mostly on an even keel as much as Doug was a hotheaded sonuvabitch who was always looking for a fight.

I corresponded with Steph on and off for years after I left the channel. It was chilling to hear of her problems, and I'm so glad that she is still with us.

Hahaha... the mention of Oppressor reminds me that we forgot Brian "Osserman" Osserman... who I used to call Cervical Osserman. Ha!

And, lord, the very mention of the name Doug.... the Dougiest of them all, Doug "Castellan" Erickson
