“Vin Diesel is a super awesome dude, I can't tell you how much I like this guy,” commented James Gunn via Facebook. “I hope this [photo] puts to rest all the silly Thanos-Vin stuff which people just seemed to make up out of nothing.” The director adds that Diesel was never announced initially: “He said he wanted to do it and we said we were talking to him. Everything else was people guessing and thinking they knew what was going to happen” After confirming that recording sessions for Groot have already begun, Gunn also made note about the Groot bust featured beside Vin Diesel in the photo: “This was the bust we used for reference when shooting. It has changed slightly from this since we started animating him.”

This movie is going to be so nuts. Hype is through the roof after the credits scene in Thor 2

He already said he only has one line in the film. It'll be three minutes maximum.

Are we sure that wasn't a half-accurate joke about how all Groot says is his name? He might be recording it with different inflections and stuff.

Let Maximus the Mad correct you.

Funny thing is this is inconsistent with stuff that happened earlier during Annihilation: Conquest. He had actual dialogue during that event.

The I AM GROOT schtick makes no sense. And Maximus is known to be totally full of shit.

I want that Groot head. That looks awesome. Happy for Vin also, he was great in the Iron Giant.

Yeah that still irks me. He was a pompous ass aristocratic jerk before he became a one-liner.

And Mantis was a prostitute and Starlord had a gun that shoots rocks. We can't live in the past.

It's no huge deal, but they went from A to B immediately with no explanation so the transition was jarring. But for all we know the movie incarnation is closer to the Conquest Groot rather than the one seen afterwards. I don't know, that bust looks erudite rather than brutish.

Thought the ret-con for the Groot intelligence inconsistencies was that he gets dumber/less able to communicate as he grows.

He was burnt down during the Annihilation storyline. Ever since he regrew, he was only able to say "I am Groot!"

I think it was something about his vocal chords atrophying. Either way, establishing it right after Conquest would have been a lot better, but either rendition would be fine.

Vin Diesel is Groot!

The star of the Fast and the Furious and Riddick franchises will lend his voice to Groot in Marvel's live-action "Guardians of the Galaxy," rounding out the team that includes Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax (Dave Bautista).

Featured in four of the six movies in the fan-favorite “Fast & Furious” franchise, Diesel has helped the series gross over $2 billion at the box office; and will reprise his role in “Fast & Furious 7.” Diesel’s most recent film, “Riddick,” the third film in the franchise that has so far earned a cumulative $267.3 million across the globe, debuted this year at the top of the box office. In addition to lending his voice to several video games, Diesel’s received great acclaim for his voice work in the celebrated animated film “The Iron Giant,” directed by Brad Bird.

In the far reaches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, an unlikely cast of characters including Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket Raccoon must join forces to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions. Directed by James Gunn, the live-action "Guardians of the Galaxy" will take fans to new corners of the Marvel Universe when it hits theaters August 1, 2014, but in the meantime stay tuned to Marvel.com for the latest news as it breaks, including official casting, first looks and more!

In addition to "Guardians of the Galaxy," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" on April 4, 2014; "Avengers: Age of Ultron" on May 1, 2015; and "Ant-Man" on July 31, 2015.
