Virtual Boy™ for Nintendo Switch™ 2/Nintendo Switch: Preorders now open in the USA.

I think the massive clue was the Virtual Boy was announced as part of the online subscription service. This should not be a surprise by now as it's been a thing for the last eight years.

Whether it was a surprise or not wasn't the point of my complaint.

It's a simple choice, you either subscribe to the online service or not, and there are plenty of emulation routes available if not. Not sure the Virtual boy can be emulated, but it's not the biggest loss ever. I doubt I will ever use it, and most certainly will not be buying an accessory for it lol..

VB can be emulated - I can personally attest. Regardless, these 2 new VB games Nintendo wants to paywall behind an inconvenient method will not remain imprisoned as such.

It's up to them at the end of the day, people will either subscribe or vote with their wallets. To be honest I don't have all that much spare time to play the new games, and retro stuff will be a mild diversion at best...

I don't know if anyone is interested in these but just in case there are fellow USA marks* keeping their eyes out for them.

Here is a direct link to full headset/shell version:

I just about beat that Wario game on the Target demo unit when I was a kid.

It does suck and you do get motion sickness even standing still with it.

I wish they would have released these for 3DS or something back in the day. I actually want to play these games on a 3D display.
This is absolutely what they should have done. Although now that I've gotten to try the initial wave on NSO, I'd probably have felt like I got ripped off if I bought any of them aside from Wario and Pinball. I can see why the headset crashed and burned.

So I'm assuming this isn't popular as hardly any replies from anyone that has one. Got mine last Friday I think, but really waited until today to have a proper go as although breath of the wild is nice on vr for switch 2 it doesn't have enough options to make the view adjustable and Botw is setup for head tracking (note I have the full seated unit)
Played with the virtual boy games off and on today, setup is odd, some games like wario I didn't need to change ipd really, but some of the others I did. Getting ipd settings up is achieved by holding down the R joystick but found this intermittent as to bring up the setting which is frustrating and it has a lot of options within the games for the ipd and zoom options too (which will mean you need to readjust your ipd) but the 15 minute break thing is kind of necessary as games with more 3d movement do strain your eyes, whereas wario was pretty comfortable for a long time.
It's a neat novelty, but the headset was expensive and unless they correct things in software this gives me eye strain after about 20 minutes, weird as never had that on any vr before

Thinking of picking this up for it's 3D capabilities/compatibility with Switch 1 games. Playing BOTW and Smash Bros in 3D was very entertaining.

Seems like there is a big downside with the $100 VB shell. You can't keep the joycons attached and use it without the stand for head tracking like you can with the cardboard VB??? Ok it's a niche downside. FEw will care except someone like me who would have fun for an hour messing around with it in BotW.

I just can't get past the red and black, I never wanted this when it launched, in fact I thought Nintendo had lost their minds lol.. But awesome news for the Nintendo retro heads out there.

I had one. We all liked it. I think my mother got it from Montgomery Ward.
Our age is showing mentioning places like that lmao. I actually bought the Nintendo clock but can't even imagine buying this but I never was interested in playing the virtual boy ever again 😆

I am optimistic for the Switch 2 OLED upgrade making Virtual Boy justice. Everyone talking about the technology for the original Virtual Boy screen makes me think the Switch 2 high response time single backlight LCD will not work well at replicating it. Like at all :/.

Yea I saw that. No big deal though, just situate it on a table or hell, in your lap and play that way. Also, I'm pretty sure 3d parties will once again make a headstrap for a hands/stand free experience.

I'd rather have the shell as it will allow for different color filters and is more durable than cardboard

boy wait until you figure out about the meta quest.

I've already mentioned that emulator in this same forum thread, but I was replying to a request for these on 3DS. And the 3DS may actually be an even better way to enjoy these, because the quest sticks absolutely suck for games like Wario.

As a fan of the VirtualBoy, I'm pretty impressed with the new shell. It's almost 1:1. Side by side with the 30+ year old original, it's near identical. The stand is exactly the same and interchangeable.

If you're interested in playing BotW or Labo games in 3D though, this is not the accessory for you. The replica, like the original, has red filters over the eyepieces. You will not be playing any games in color unless the color is red.

But the red filter pops out.

As others have said the red filter pops out, however most labo vr games require head tracking to see the full screen else you are looking at just part of the screen, seems the cardboard version is the versions to get if you wanna do the labo stuff, haven't been back to it yet after Tetris gave me a headache, which was the day after my post, still haven't fully decided I'll keep the headset or send it back for a refund or flip it on eBay, have a few more games to test still and wario is very good.

As someone who modded his new 3ds a few years back (was bored during the pandemic) and installed the virtual boy emulator that supports stereostropic 3d perfectly that is definitely the superior way to play the virtual boy catalog
