Waiting for Niinou, a play in two acts (the story behind Image Epoch)

So a few people have been wondering what exactly IS going on with Image Epoch.

The developer popped up sorta out of nowhere to release the mediocre Luminous Arc; unrelatedly (at the time), as soon as Atlus's Etrian Odyssey was released, we found out that its director (who also directed Trauma Center) Kazuya Niinou had left the company. Then Image Epoch's site mentioned that it had hired both Niinou and Hiroyuki Kanamaru, a former developer with Namco Tales Studio and Telenet. A few pieces of art were linked to ongoing game development projects, but there weren't any details. Then Image Epoch's site went down as they moved to a new office, and when it reopened, it... still didn't really have any details.

Anyway, there's a little bit more information now, courtesy of Mikage and Niinou making the PR rounds and another update on their website. Most of this was translated by ducky, so thank him for it.

• Kazuya Niinou wasn't just randomly hired. He specifically was courted by the owner of Image Epoch, Ryoei Mikage, while Etrian Odyssey was in development. Further, he's not a peon there, either. He's named as a senior director and planner within the company, so expect him to play a big role in a lot of what they're working on. He mentioned that, in addition to directing his own game, he's giving his input on most of their ongoing projects.

• The company has expanded. A lot. Image Epoch has 110 employees with about 20 additional freelance contractors working on projects for them. The staff is dividend into four and a half individual teams. While it wasn't specified, we can assume three of those teams are Niinou's, Kanemaru's, and Mikage's. No idea who might have been hired to head the rest.

• The company also has pretty big plans. Following Luminous Arc 2, they're aiming to release a new game every three months. Look for the unveilings of some of their other projects (Project Ray, Project Salamander, Project DF) to happen near or after LA2's release.

• Marvelous is the only publisher we know for a fact that Image Epoch is working with. But they may have stuff published by other companies, too. As a matter of fact, the company just updated its website to announce that Square Enix is a client, which means that it's possible they're currently working on a Square Enix game. And as it's unlikely they would've added that notice to their site for no reason, it's also possible we may see a specific game announcement soon.

• Epoch is interested in following the Level-5 approach to development: good offices, good pay, and creative freedom with an eye towards making money. Feel free to take a look at their office. It's pretty snazzy.

• Niinou made a closing statement on game development. "he's aware that at the moment there's a big contrast in east and west; RPGs made in Japan are more traditional and stuff, while western gamers look for more action. he mentions Capcom and the success they've had in action games, but he also mentions that many of the people at Imageepoch are huge fans of RPGs"

• The only platforms they're currently working on are DS and Wii. They say the systems are accessible and easy to develop for, have brought in lots of new users, yada yada.

• Mikage and Niinou aren't huge on ports. They feel if a game is ported to a different system, you need to add something original to it, because each system has its own strengths and benefits.

• Mikage said it's really cool how both Final Fantasy and Mega Man recently celebrated their 20th anniversaries, and he hopes that in 20 years, people will be celebrating something he and his company have made.

And, the info we previously knew about their games...
• Project Ray: seems to be a 2D game, no platform specified; this is the game being made by Hiroyuki Kanemaru, formerly of Tales Studio and before that Telenet

• Project Salamander: a 3D DS game

And, key staff at the company...
Ryoei Mikage (the company owner):
Luminous Arc - director

Kazuya Niinou (senior director/planner):
Trauma Center: Under the Knife - director
Etrian Odyssey - director

Hiroyuki Kanemaru (director):
Emerald Dragon - design
Fang of Arunamu - design
Tales of Symphonia - script director, script editor, level concept designer
Tales of Rebirth - scenario script

I look forward to seeing what they come up with. While I couldn't actually play Etrian Odyssey to the end, I loved the fact that they had the balls to make such an old-school game.

Well at the very least I will be interested to see what Niinou and his team come up with. In this day and age of series and sequel whoring I'll welcome any attempt to create a new rpg experience. If Etrian Oddyssey is any indication of what we can expect from future Image Epoch projects that Niinou is helming we'll know that they will, at the very least, be oldcore.

For now I'll just block out my experience with Luminous Arc, cross my fingers anbd hope for the best with this company.

Great thread erthelred. Really interestig, these type of developers are possibly the best that can happen to Wii at this moment. Love the picture of the first project, wonder if would be possible to have a game imitating that syle.

As much as my frothing demand for Image Epoch's games increases, I will forever rue the fact that they stole Niinou away from Etrian Odyssey 2.

They could just be contributing a few employees or some specialized labor to some game.
Before they did Luminous Arc they did a lot of outsourced work for other companies-for example some graphics in Wild Arms 4. I'm pretty sure that's why companies like Konami and Sega were listed as clients on their old homepage. Small Japanese companies do this frequently.

On the other hand, given Square Enix's approach to the DS it probably is a situation like Revenant Wings or It's a Wonderful World-internal producers secretly working with an external development team. They've got perfectly adequate 2d production staff so they'd be a good choice for that kind of work. And, it would make sense for them to be doing work like that to help fund all of this expansion.

Anyway, I am cautiously optimistic. It's great that someone as talented as Niinou now has so many resources at his disposal. I don't think there are many developers in the Japanese industry with such limited seniority but as powerful a position. Most of the recently founded Japanese companies were started by senior developers past their prime(e.g. Okamoto)-this company is something else entirely.

Ok Bob.

Is it normal for so many new game studio companies to just pop up in the past two years? Every week it is someone leaves to start new company.

I'm really looking forward to it, too. I loved Etrian Odyssey, and it sold me on this guy's genius as a designer (plus, all the interviews he's given solidified that further in my mind, that he's a true gamer and really understands how to make different things and has a respect for the process).

I'm fine with that. The team from the original game should have little difficulty in making minor balance tweaks and gameplay additions to the game he created. Meanwhile now he gets to not only go and create something new, but have a far larger role that could allow him to shape lots of different projects.

I thought that Project Ray was for Wii and Project S is in fact Luminous Arc 2.

Then you were what we affectionately like to refer to as "wrong."

I am very interested in what Image Epoch will be cranking out. I hope Luminous Arc 2 is a marked improvement over its predecessor.

So, now that World Destruction (Project S) has been announced, it's time to dig a little deeper into this.

http://imageepoch.co.jp/company/info.html?id=12

They have 5 clients listed:

Sega, MMV, Intelligent Systems, Square Enix, Konami.

LA and LA2 = MMV
World Destruction (Project S) = Sega

That leaves Project Ray and Project DF unannounced, and only two other publishers - Square Enix and Konami. God knows what they might be doing for Intelligent Systems, but since they're not a publisher, it's either a collaboration or just grunt work.

Also, since they plan on having a game out every 3 months after LA2, that would indicate that WD's "summer 2008" date is likely to fall in August. With the next game due in November, we might not hear anything about it until July. :(

Since I was bored I took the two pics of Project Ray on the Image Epoch site and spliced them together in Photoshop for a bigger picture. I really like what the artwork is hinting at....

Very cute style. So this is meant to be the 2D one, hm? That is so awesome, I miss 2D so much.

We don't really know anything about the game, so that's not to say its entirely a 2D game. But based on what is known about the game, the art director who runs the art team working on the backgrounds says they have a smooth system of collaborating with members of the team from outside Image Epoch, but as the ratio of his work as art director gradually increases, he finds himself wishing he had more time to draw whenever he has to work personally on the 2D art.

I just can't put my finger on why, but FFIX sprung to mind when I saw that picture. Strange.

I had pretty much the same thought. It's the "cute" aircars-in-a-vertical-city motif combined with the "old-timey" architectural elements (wrought iron railings, rounded flourishes, etc.) -- it's just like Lindblum.

Could be, but why would Image Epoch be making FE DS instead of IS? IS has DS development staff right?

Will I.S. games are Advance War(just recently released on DS so its unlikly), Paper Mario(Then the partner should be named Nintendo as a client not I.S.) and Fire Emblem (we saw a DS remake and we are not sure its who's devoloping it) maybe I.S. DS development staff might be working on the rumored Paper Mario DS.

Do you know about the Fire Emble remake or hate the idea of Image Epoch doing the remake?

I know about the remake. I also know about Luminous Arc.

But hey, it's a remake. Nothing can go wrong... right?

Paper Mario DS was fake. Do not remind me of that abomination.

Really?! I thought it was confirmed somewhere later in the thread but I didn't know it was fake. Bummer.

Ethelred and a couple of other members here on GAF, I'd like to also say that I find it awesome how you know so much about the people behind the games you play. Personally I only know some of the big names and it's cool to see how some of the people on GAF can see, and hear, the different styles in music and art of some of the developers. I don't know why but, yeah.

To be honest I never tried Luminous Arc, its on my "Should I buy it?" list. I became very skeptical about ds Srpgs after Heros of Mana. Regarding Fire Emblem I don't think (if Image Epoch is doing the remake) will change the Fire Emblem formula so don't think anything can go wrong.

The air car reminded me specifically of the South Gate car (which is basically the same thing as South Gate was part of Lindblum and shared its architectural style). Regardless, it is a great piece of artwork. And after the fantastic Salamander/WD reveal, I'm really pretty psyched for the curtains to be pulled back off of Project Ray as well.

I enjoyed Luminous Arc even though it was pretty simple, and will definitely be looking forward to the sequel.

I'm pretty interested in this company; I hope they're successful in their business. I'm definitely supporting them with World Destruction.

In the latest blog entry by Mikage, he presents Luminous Arc 2's director. LA2's director is Shuetsu Kadowaki, and he has previously worked at Atlus and Artoon. At Atlus he was a planner on SMT3 and a CG Designer/planner for DDS and DDS2. At Artoon he was in charge of the World Map and Mechat parts. Apparently the focus for the sequel was to improve the controls/inteface and the game balance. Hopefully they succeeded, but I doubt we'll find out since no one is going to buy the game.

Please please be true. Assuming this is picked up for localization, that is.

Wow, he really is picking up talented people. Hopefully that begins to show in the future.

Finally, another update to Mikage's blog and some good news is coming up. He's been really busy lately, but World Destruction's content is now complete. All the various components of the game is in a complete form and they will be balancing, debugging and fine tuning the game until it is ready for releast.

He also mentions that at the end of this month, they'll be announcing their third original IP after Luminous Arc and World Destruction. This will be Kanemaru's game, which is Project RAY. It will be unveiled in gaming mags next week, so we finally have some interesting news to look forward to. :D

In his latest blog entry Mikage mentions that this year Image Epoch registered to be developers for both Xbox360 and PS3. This means they're active developers for every single hardware available this generation. He seems pretty excited. Oh and he also bought P4. Apparently he loves Persona too. Seems like a cool guy!

Another update from Mikage. This time he talks about upcoming stuff. Now that World Destruction is complete, he's focusing on supervising the polishing up of Arc Rise Fantasia as Tokyo Game Show is coming up. Promotion for the game is scheduled to resume shortly before TGS, and he thinks that they'll should have a product that's close to completion on display.

He also mentions that before TGS, there will be another game announced. This title is something that he does not want to announce even a day before it is ready to be shown. At the moment he can't say when it will be revealed, but he promises it's coming soon. A week before the game is announced (in Famitsu I support), he'll post on the blog like before, giving fans the head's up.

This is most likely Niinou's project, so I guess the long wait, and the original purpose of this thread, is finally coming to an end. :D

So the purpose of this thread and the great journey will finally come to an end next week. In next week's Famitsu, not only will Arc Rise Fantasia's media campaign resume, but Niinou's new game will be unveiled. Here's what we know so far:

http://dragon.sega.jp

- No title or platform yet
- RPG title
- The producer is Reiko Kodama of Phantasy Star and Skies of Arcadia fame
- Niinou is directing, Koshiro is composing
- The character designer is a doujin moe artist: http://mota.sakura.ne.jp

Hm... that geman Sega magazine, which had the first Sonic Unleashed screens said some months ago that Sega will definitely show Skies of Arcadia 2 at TGS. Now we know of a new RPG published by Sega and produced by the SoA producer? Maybe Skies of Arcadia 2 is real?

Okay, that's probably just wishful thinking. The style of the teaser site and the former work of the character deisgner doesn't fit SoA at all.

All of Image Epoch's 3 current projects are new IPs. It won't be Skies.
