Either I made up lies about the Boston Bomber or I fell for someone else's crap. Either way, I have absolutely no credibility and you should never pay any attention to anything I say, no matter what the context. Perm me if I claim to be an insider
We all know what the Cleveland Browns are named after.

Cleveland Steamers?

Don't get me wrong. I love the Cleveland Browns.

I agree that the name should change but I'll miss the Cowboys vs Indians theme that was played up with their rivalry with Dallas.

Ultimately the Native American students on campus asked them to stop. The Sioux asked them for the Chief's battle regalia back (But I think the school probably just bought it back int he day.) I think the tribe who they say the Chief represents asked them to stop as well.

If that's the case, then I guess I'm fine with it. I think it's more the graphic designer in me that finds it disappointing, because it really was a fantastic logo. Illinois' athletic department badly needs a redesign of their overall graphic identity.

It makes me glad my alma mater's mascot is a nut. I don't think the nut community is going to be protesting us any time soon.

The Browns are named after a person. Does anyone have a last name of Redskin so we can save the rivalry?

That's a great logo, though. I'll never understand why anyone would group that alongside the crude caricature that is the Indians' mascot.

Sure, it's no Wahoo as far as racist logos go (although as a white dude I'm reluctant to declare any depiction of another culture as racist/not racist, or get into defining degrees of racism), but any depiction of any Native American of any kind has become taboo in sports in recent years. It was surprising any team would move forward with re-introducing a portrayal like that.

How about this?

Redskins are Communist of Left Wing Socialist skinheads. They align themselves with SHARP.

This can be the new logo

I don't think every single Indian-themed team name is bad. There are tiers.

Offensive - Redskins
Borderline - Indians
Fine - Braves, Chiefs, Seminoles, Blackhawks

It's possible to honor the native people of these lands and their fighting spirit without being dicks about it. Celebrating them as brave and regal is cool with me. Calling someone a "redskin" is pretty ugly and mean-spirited, so why would you want to join a team with that name?

I can see how people could be offended. I do think the team, name and logo are timeless though and classy in their own way. I would be sad if they changed it, well if they changed it for politically correct reasons. But I would understand.

So do the Orioles. But, teams older than 100 years old should.

I would like the Colorado Rockies to change their logo. Anything meant to capitalize on the LA Raiders/Kings fad needs to go.

I cannot even compute "Communist of Left Wing Socialist skinheads." Are these people who just shoot themselves in the head as soon as they join?

Sorry, Communist or Left Wing Socialist Skinheads.

I have no idea what they are about, it was just what came up in Google.

Well, that have a creedo.

To dispel the myth, in both the media and in mind of the general public, that all skinheads are racist.
To keep alive and expand the true skinhead subculture through means such as music (Oi!, Ska, Reggae, Soul, Hardcore, Street Punk, etc.), fashion, fanzines, fliers, concerts, dancehalls, and gatherings.
To create a space for left-wing ideas to exist in the skinhead scene.
To combat, physically and politically, the existence of far-Right ideas in the skinhead scene.
To win back the good name of our subculture from the boneheads and racists.
To articulate the connection between the young, working-class, multi-racial skinhead subculture and left-wing ideas.
To organize for the physical self-defense of left-wing skinheads from attack by all those who declare themselves our enemies.
To participate as an active, organized force of anti-racist skinheads in the radical Left and anti-fascist movements.
To make sure our vision of the anti-fascist radical Left (working-class, multi-racial, street based and militant) continues to exist

Apparently, they formed due to schism in their original org as a result of the beating of a gay man by SHARP skins in NYC.

Here's an interesting article:

http://www.redskins.com/news-and-ev...Our-Name/cc374c86-5782-4bb2-a0e0-d8c4c9f313b8

McLoud High School is nestled in Pottawatomie County, Okla., approximately 30 miles east of Oklahoma City.

In a community rich with Native American history, the school district made the decision more than 50 years ago to switch from the Tigers mascot to the Redskins, as a tribute to their pride and tradition.

“A few years back, there was a movement of a group that attempted to change our name from the Redskins,” he said. “Many of the Native Americans in our community stepped forward and said ‘No, we’re not going to do that. We are proud of being the Redskins.’”

Read on.

So my question would be, is the name only acceptable if used by the Native American community? Or could any sports team use it and say its honoring them as well?

I'm offended that the University of Colorado uses "Buffaloes" as their nickname when their mascot is actually a bison.

Get on that, ChiTown.

Since Blackhawks is named after a specific person (Chief Black Hawk), it's fine.

It's a really nice logo, too.

Some universities and schools have a great relationship with the tribes they are representing and the tribes support the use of their names.
If they don't and the community is offended, they should change the name.

There are a little under three million Native Americans in the United States. I don't think their numbers were much higher in 1776, as the Native American viral genocide began in the late 15th century. By the time the United States had been founded, nearly all of the damage had been done.

It's a completely inappropriate name, like we haven't progressed at all from the 1950s.

It's not going anywhere though. The redskins are the 2nd most profitable team in the NFL and that kind of money speaks very, very loudly.

I don't understand the money argument. If they change the name and start selling the new merchandise, don't you think that will be extremely profitable? Are people going to stop going to games and buying merchandise just because of a name change? Has it happened before?

if it was called the Washington Blackface, there would be an aproar.
so yeah, change the name.

Native Americans need more resepct being the original real Americans

Exactly right. If the public actually turned on the team and stopped buying merchandise, the name would change in a heartbeat.

It's going to take that or a court order to change the name.

The name itself is offensive in origin but I think that it's pretty abstracted at this point. I don't know what they would do about the logo as it is iconic but they could say "redskin" means the reddish skin of the football.

Is there a problem with people calling other people redskins?

Unless there is in pockets of the world I'm not aware of, it's a lazy false equivalence to compare it to the "N" word.

College and high school teams have been renamed for PC reasons. Not sure whether it effected their bottom line or not.

How is the name classy? It is a reprehensible name that should be changed immediately.

I don't know that anyone knows what would happen, which is enough of a business reason not to make a change unless you have to.

Keep the mascot and just get permission from Native American groups to name it something that isn't seen as offensive.

The French are to blame. French trappers coined the term buffalo, from the French boeuf[/]. Apparently they name has been around longer than bison in North America.

Unless of course you mean this ill thought out alternate mascot uniform

Do you think Dan Snyder would want to risk it?

I'm a Washington fan, but the "Redskins" name is so ridiculous that I don't want to wear anything with the name or logo. They've lost dozens of dollars in potential sales. DOZENS!

Redskins is too far. But it's been around so long that people will defend it intensely.

Chiefs, Braves, Blackhawks, etc are okay. Redskins is bad though. It should be changed.

That is where I fall in the end. It is a term that in my mind is quite horrible, but nobody uses it in a disparaging way towards Native Americans. But then they are such a small part of our population now that I rarely interact with straight up Native Americans. I have been to a few reservations and a few casinos with pals, and nobody uses that term. It is a dead word outside of the football team.

Syracuse University changed from being the "Orangemen" to just "Orange" due to wanting to remain gender neutral. Supposedly the name is entirely related to the school colors but I remember hearing about before getting Otto the Orange as a mascot they had the "Saltine Warrior" so they stopped that in the 70's r 80's when a lot of programs were trying to be more politically correct. I remember St John's also being previously called the "Redmen" to now being called the "red storm" though i like this name better.

actually Buffle is the French word for the animal type but yeah Buffle is direed from Boeuf.
