Weezer sucks

Weezer is the band of a generation now?

Hell yeah.
The most commercially successful band with such a psuedo-punk rock, apathetic (emo) edge.
I'd also credit them with bringing rock music that has a more personal meaning instead of the generic love, drugs, heartbreak.
I mean, who else would it be? Dishwalla?
EDIT: Nothing against Dishwalla.

I never got into Weezer. I was a fan of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and the like and in '94 going from the angst-filled grunge music to something like Buddy Holly was too much for me to handle. With Kurt dead and the new punk era coming around marking the end of grunge I stopped listening to rock radio and oddly switched over to rap/hip-hop.

I haven't had a chance to read through the thread yet but I can only hope that everybody has been saying something akin to "Dude, blue album and Pinkerton," because those are two of the best albums of the 90s.

The 2000s? Yeah, green album and Maladroit were super mediocre and they eventually turned to crap. But Hurley was their most tolerable album since the 90s (only 1/3 of it made me want to claw my ears off, and another 1/3 was kind of good!), so I guess I have a small flicker of hope that they could have a minor rebound. But we'll see. I could just be still riding off the high of those Memories Tour shows.

It's crazy how much of their unreleased material is better than their actual releases in the last decade. STFBH, post-pinkerton stuff, summer songs of 2000, album 5 demos, etc etc etc.

haahaa, OP was wrong! the new album rocks and there's 5 great songs on it alone. "foolish father", "anonymous", "go away", "da vinci", "ain't got nobody"... rest is alright too.

The World Has Turned and Left Me Here

you're one of the good guys, but i knew that already.

They had some good stuff but they are always the first band I think of when thinking about bands that should hang it up. I don't even understand how their terrible songs get air play anymore.

I'm in the minority, but I think Weezer only lost their way (or, perhaps, simply chose to target a different audience) after Maladroit, an album which I consider a perfectly good listen.

no guys, the new album. its great. honestly i've already listened to it more than any of their other albums :O something about it just clicks with me perfectly.

The new album is outstanding. Can listen to it nonstop. Really a return to form for them.

Also, you really showed that guy who posted 2 years ago!

This is a weird thread that I think I've posted in before. The best Weezer is best, the worst Weezer is the lowest of the low. Just avoid albums 3-9 (with some song/maybe album exceptions) and you'll be golden.

Before you get all "OMG WEEZER IS BEST BAND" on me, name 5 songs that aren't Hash pipe, Island in the Sun, Buddy Holly, Pork and Beans, or Beverly Hills.

Bonus points if you can do it without Googling.

RevDM is back.

easiest thing ever
and I'll attempt to not post any blue or pinkerton

burnt jamb
pig (demo)
you gave your love to me softly
keep fishin'
hold me

and then every song on pinkerton and blue

EDIT: and the new album is definitely pretty damn good. a lot of songs i really, really love

Oh wow I had some fun in this thread a few years back. The funny thing is I don't think I've listened to Weezer in the two plus years since this thread was started, I guess I should give the new record a spin sometime.

Only 5...

aint got Nobody
Back to the Shack
The British are Coming
Da Vinci
Go Away

just off latest album.

WEEZER is my shit son!

I dunno the new album only got a 6.5 from pitchfork, so I don't think much has changed. probably will skip altogether if I hear a negative review from theneedledrop.

Pitchfork is the absolute shittiest place to get music reviews from. I've used that site to find new music, but they are a bunch of pretentious wankers over there. They haven't even reviewed the newest Taylor Swift yet... I guess they had to award another 9.2 while writing 1000 words praising some idiot group that was able to use every button on their synthesizer without writing an actual song.

Yeah, about Weezer... I like their first couple of albums and not much since.

Weird necro bump.

Blue is obviously the best, but they've had quite a few good songs through the years. The last few albums were pretty bad, but the new one is good. Keep Fishin' and Perfect Situation don't get enough love, the videos especially are just too good.

Edit: Right on GAF, never knew why people liked Beverly Hills.

I like Weezer's new album...I have The Futurescope Trilogy on repeat.

Saw them at the Cosmo in Vegas back in August, they still know how to rock the house, yo.

Blue Album is pretty much perfect from start to finish

The ex-lady and I named our son after "My Name is Jonas" and she used to always sing "In the Garage" to him when he was a baby. We're not super fans or anything, but it's still a lovely album that will forever be close to our hearts.

That OP is so bad, haha.

The new record is good, not sure if it's closer to Blue/Pinkerton or Green/Maladroit but I was very surprised with how much I liked it. Frustrating band though. Each one of their records after Maladroit would have some decent songs but they were almost always disappointing on the whole, some more than others. I think Red is a little underrated (about half of it is great) but the new record is the first time they've put something out in over a decade that I think is unequivocally good.

It warms my heart that they were able to turn the slide around so dramatically.
There are a lot of cringe lyrics on the latest album, but musically it's really enjoyable. I'd rather see a move back toward the painfully personal lyrics from Pinkerton, but I'll take what I can get.

Good Life, Say it Ain't So, My Name is Jonas, The Sweater Song and El Scorchio.

First two albums are brilliant pop. They went to shit after that.

New album is great. Has a couple clunkers, but on the whole it's awesome. Best thing since Pinkerton (I know, not saying much). But in general, i do think it's actually a good album. I saw them on Tour recently, and they played 10 Blue album and Pinkerton songs on acoustic. Was amazing (felt like their early 90s tours). And then they played new album front to back. And it was much better live, because the songs had more bite and were played faster/harder.

So it made me appreciate the album more. I can agree that overall "Weezer sucks" as an idea, makes sense. Looking at their overall output, it's pretty awful. But Blue Album and Pinkerton are classics. So they have talent. It was just squandered and burnt out. And the new album shows they still have it (well, given their age. It's an album that makes sense given their age and where the band is at).
