Western release of Final Fantasy X/X-2 on Switch requires the card to play X-2 even though it's a download

While the Asian release of FFX/X-2 HD on Switch includes both games on the card. Square cheapened out for the western release and went for a lower capacity card that only includes the first game while the sequel comes in the form of a one time use download code. The problem is that this digital copy of FFX-2 requires the game card as a form of physical DRM to launch.

So you are basically getting the worst of both worlds: A digital copy you can't trade or resell but that requires a physical game to work.
It's also a move that goes directly against the second hand market, any used copy will only include the first game while simultaneously locking the original owner out of their digital copy of X-2.

EDIT: Damn, fucked up with the title. Should say "card" instead of "cart". Mods, please change

Shitty move IMO. If they want to spend less on the card but also don't want people to be able to keep the digital copy of X-2 they should have put the missing data into a day 1 update/patch instead of a one time use code

First the odd online DRM that was slipped into the PC version of FFX/X-2 recently (and it was then removed...I think?) and now this....Square needs to chill out with this kind of nonsense.
