What does NEOGAF think of the graphics on Wii U's second wave of games

How many RPGs have achieved the same sense of scale though, without sacrifice? Too many RPGs this generation have become too closed off, due to technical reasons or resources. It looks like Monolith Soft won't be facing such restrictions, since the scale here is certainly reminiscent to Xenoblade's.

That small island near the mech's leg in the first image is the same island the character is shown battling in the second one. This one part of the world is ridiculously large and can be explored on a friggin mech without load screens. Very few games can get that done at this level of detail. It certainly is impressive, both on an aesthetic and technical level.

Now how much of that is actually explorable? You're comparing different types of RPGs, but X is definitely on a whole other level graphically.
This is what I am saying....where the hell are the open world JRPG's. Thank God we have at least two to look forward to now. I don't know if it is impressive on a technical level but the draw distances and overall vastness does look impressive albeit slightly unpopulated.

However if we leave the JRPG scene, I would say that the game is on par with RDR (lighting in RDR is spectacular though). When I first saw this I thought it looked next gen but after seeing posts about RDR and Just Cause 2 I think it is not. To get this on your first game shows how good Monolith are or that extra umph the WiiU has over current gen.

wait, people here really thinks Xenoblade 2 (or any other game that was shown for that matter) was more graphically impressive than any PS360 game? really?
fanboyism at its finest. the games looks good, ill give you that, but not the 'better than anything on the PS360' kind of good.

Well it looks better than FF13.

Its pointless to argue against hype. Nobody is going to be convinced of anything they haven't already decided. Lessons learned, etc. Some people are convinced its the greatest thing ever, others think it looks like a wii game. Most people fall somewhere inbetween, and that aggravates the hell out of the extreme-types.
Pretty hard to evaluate 'second wave of wii u games' when there are no second wave of games have been released. What we are evaluating is some development footage.

I think the games showed today look fantastic, but it's nothing technically impressive.

And here is a video of Shadow of the Colossus using that rasterizing technique.

Then why post how good it looks in the ultimate technical discussion thread, where it is clearly not in its place, given the fact you think it looks unimpressive technically?

For one thing you're asking everyone to separate two integral pieces of a whole.

Xenoblade was impressive both on artistic merits and technical usage of the hardware constraints designed under. Two parts of a whole. Just because you don't see something ground-breaking or new in the technical design does not mean you can't have an appreciation of what it renders. This is my stance on most of these recent WiiU software reveals. "Visually stunning, but technically very much grounded in the current class of consoles."

I'm sure we'll see improvements, but I doubt any of it will be completely out of the reach of either the 360 or PS3.
I guess you didn't bother to read what i wrote. If he doesn't think the game is impressive FROM A TECHNICAL point of view, then why post about thinking it looks great artistically with screenshots and all in a TECHNICAL DISCUSSION thread, where that has no place when he was clearly NOT making a point about how unimpressive it looked technically. That i could have understood.

It looks good, but not "better than anything the 360 and PS3 have" good.
Well, i'm not going to disagree (yet - it is early footage from a studio's first game for the hardware which is just out). I would say, as it stands now, if the game ends up looking like this trailer, it looks like one of the better/best PS360 games out there. Maybe you'll find a few games on PS360 that look even better technically, but it will be no large amount by no large leap. Hence, i do not agree with your downplaying of the effort put into it as "not imressive". By that standard, what is impressive? Only the game that looks better than anything out there for a short period of time until another game tops it?

I can understand the argument if you are expecting PS4 level graphics. But we know WiiU is no PS4 and a relatively smaller jump from PS360. So calling it unimpressive or mediocre seems like a stretch, when the game clearly falls in line with the best efforts on those consoles, for a first effort on new hardware as well. Yet i don't care for many of your other arguments, which are borderline trolling. "My brother says so, so that's that"... WTF? Because the people you're arguing with have never played games before, hence your brother's opinion is superior?

Here is footage of the console version of Far Cry 3.

1/ yuck
2/ pop... pop... pop... pop.pop.pop...

X impresses me quite a bit given its scale... In fact, I do think the fidelity + scale is means it is up there with the best games this gen. Rendering really reminds me of Halo 4

It feels to me a bit like the jump that Gamecube was from PS2 - There are likely things that the Wii U will be able to do that 360/PS3 possibly can't - but it's not enough to call it a jump.

That said, Nintendo have always been the best at using a great art style to bolster the visuals of a game, so I wouldn't be surprised if the new 3D Mario is absolutely stunning.

Well it looks better than FF13.
You think? It looks pretty comparable with the grand pulse scene and what we've seen of versus two years ago.

The thing that's really impressive though, are not the trailer graphics but how fast Monolith is able to achieve this level of graphics.

It took S-E a team of more than 300 people and many, many years to produce a JRPG without HD towns and we're still waiting for versus which has been in development for like 7 years. This will probably launch before Versus does.

Monolith does what S-E don't.

I hope you guys know that X isnt finished yet. Everyone is comparing X to finished games as if X was complete already and theres no room for improvements anymore. The game is going to look better than it already does when its finished.

Ok, time to open some eyes i think.

------
Very low polygonal terrain

Sun height doesnt affect shadows at all. Here sun is about in 30 degree, but shadow is cast from 80 degree. So lighting is static, mostly prebaked. Shadow resolution looks like 1024k.

Particles quality is on pair with pre PS2 era, alpha texture resolution 64x64?

Water rendering is very simple, there is no refraction or distortion and no reflections from objects. Also next example of very low resolution alpha textures.

Foliage is completely sprite based, same as in Xenoblade

LOD is very aggressive, even for sprite based foliage and that means bandwidth problems of WiiU

Yeah, its on pair with midtier current gen open world games, but even that is generous. What is good in this footage? Characters/NPCs models, materials and HDR.

Wow, good check, really. Yeah, tech wise is far beyond to be a step above, it's almost a step back to be brutal, especially the last 2 pics :\ To be honest I will appreciate if some developers will use the same trick on ps3, indeed to reduce the grass, in the free roaming.

also, it looks remarkably similar to FF13 Gran Pulse area, it even shares the "barren landscape with huge monsters" theme.

The trailer shows more action than the entirety of Gran Pulse....(which isn't that big when you are in it).

Edit: This thread is getting ridiculous. It's a new game, it looks good. That's it. Comparing it to 3rd and 4th gen games is meaningless. How does it compare to the games unveiled in the first three months of the PS3 and 360? pretty fucking well actually. Lets have a real conversation about the relative abilities of the Wii U compared to the HD twins when the Wii U has had chance to be pushed. See you in two or three years.

I can't tell if that is supposed to be a joke post or not.

"Low polygon terrain" = one obvious corner

"Sun height doesnt affect shadows at all. Here sun is about in 30 degree, but shadow is cast from 80 degree. So lighting is static, mostly prebaked."

The only shadow I can make out in this picture is of the vehicle which obviously isn't pre-baked. Someone already pointed out a shadow from the environment casing onto an enemy. There is probably some amount of pre-baking - just like there is in KZ2 and Rage among a million other titles.

"Particles quality is on pair with pre PS2 era, alpha texture resolution 64x64?" - ok yeah, this is a joke post.

Good one, you had me going for a while.

Outside of whatever shiny tech they're using for W101 and the DoF for Pikmin, they all look current gen quality. The art style helps the visuals.

X looks like a current gen game. Not sure what people are looking at. Low-poly, poor textures, LoD/pop-in, baked lighting, low quality particle effects. It would be one of the better looking games for current gen, for sure. Certainly not next-gen, though. Watch_Dogs and 1313 both look a gen ahead of this game.

I'm getting really tired that the majority of threads os NeoGAF lately is all "next gen oh yeah rendering triple x motherfucking hdr x 2000 moving grass omg is this next gen or not I won't buy if the graphics ain't good enough look at this it next gen u mad bro have u seen this 5000 triple buffering graphics you can even see the nasal hairs lucky me if I couldn't see the nasal hairs it would have been a no buy".
Cringe-worthy post.

Otherwise, will you argue with something else than a gif, supposing make fun of what I said ?
I doubt we've seen something with that graphic quality + draw distance + scale on PS360.
Even Final Fantasy Versus XIII doesn't look as good or as huge.
The best looking games comparable in scale/size would be Skyrim and Far Cry 3, and neither look as good as Xeno.

When we're balls deep in next-gen?

Yup. Let's wait until then and favourably compare the Wii-U to systems that will be a decade old and have been superseded.

It has dat feel of next-gen graphics.

Seriously, as long as Nintendo games stick to non-realistic artstyles mixed with current gen rendering techniques, I think they will be visually impressive. They might not be technically impressive, but what do you expect from hardware which obviosuly isn't on par with next-gen consoles.
