What happened in 2003 that led EDGE mag staff to quit?

Oct 2003 saw the walkout of editor Joao Diniz-Sanches, deputy editor David McCarthy, and "other staff writers" (Ste?)... Unreliable source Wikipedia makes it sound like there were only two staff writers left after this: Tony Mott and Margaret Robertson.

Tony Mott took over as editor for ~ three years, he eventually ceded the throne to Margaret Robertson in 2006. And then, in May 2007, Margaret stepped down and Tony took over again.

Not particularly important in the greater scheme of things, but I am intrigued and curious to know what happened that caused such an uproar in 2003. I haven't been reading the magazine long enough to notice whether there was a dramatic change in direction once they left, but surely something fishy had to have been going on.

Anybody have any idea?

I was wondering today, in 1912 the Titanic sank. Why did it sink? I was looking on Wikipedia and all I could find was something about a Iceburg.

It sank because of man's hubris.

Why do some women seem to have a G spot but others claim they dont? Why dont they tell men were it is as soon as the going starts? Why make them guess.

:lol You ladies are awfully ridiculous

While we're at it, when will Chrono Trigger be re-released on a modern system?

I didn't realise there were so many OLL fans on GAF. I search for it being mentioned every now and again, but I never get any matches. It's an awesome show.

As unfunny as these responses are, I am interested in the answer to the OPs question.

I guess that a brit forum like rllmuk would be better fitted to answer the OP. Tony Mott posts there from time to time (but I really doubt he'd go into any kind of detail regarding the issue).

From memory, the reason was that there was a Red Eye column which accused Rockstar of using magazines aimed at children and young teenagers to promote their 18-rated GTA games. Future Publishing got upset as many of these magazines were owned by them, the Edge staffers stood by what they had written and quit in defiance rather than post an apology/retract the comments.

Something along those lines. You may get a better response on the Edge Forums.

Thank you! I'll try Edge and rllmuk later today when I get back from work.

Simon is leaving? Why?
Presumably because of the baby coming.

Anyway, I got a response from one of them, but it doesn't really say anything controversial as such.
I left because I felt we (and our readers) were badly treated by our publisher. It's all water under the bridge now.

I don't think it's permanent.

He's missing the final episode because of the baby as mentioned, but they didn't say he wasn't coming back for season 4.

You'll probably get eaten alive on Rllmuk if you haven't posted before, it's not the most welcoming place for new members.

Great to hear somebody come up with a smart answer.

Truth hurts - and unfortunately business usually comes before ethics.

Edge probably is read by a mature audience where as the official magazines cater for a younger crowd.

That explains why Redeye's articles disappeared...

Because "half of all women were estimated to have no G-spot." (From the section Findings in the May 2008 Issue of Harper's Magazine)

I'd disagree. As someone who has only really started posting there (although I joined a while back), all it takes is a little common sense, no fanboy baiting and something worthwhile to say.

The last part is something I wish more of GAF took notice of.

The key thing to not say is that you're a new member. They/We don't care and you'll get abuse (more like unfunny jokes thrown at you)

Ste used to write the RedEye columns so when he left, they obviously ended.

I've been on Rllmuk for years and I guess you're right; I've just seen far too many new posters given a roasting. You just have to lurk a bit and get a feel for the place.
