What is your current game of the generation so far?

Right now i would probably have to say Dead Cells
Astral Chains might be up there but i need to finish everything i missed in the story files and then try to complete file 12 before i can judge it properly
Dragon Quest XI might also get in there. I have only played the Switch demo so far but i loved it
Then there is Nier Automata which i just started. I see so many people praising it so i can't rule out the possibility that it might top the others
Into the breach would have made it if it had more content. I absolutely love that game but once you've unlocked everything, there is no reason to go back to it. Some kind of endless mode or just increasingly hard new game+'s would have made it a contender for sure

Probably Bloodborne but I'd argue RDR 2 is the most impressive game of the gen. I also really need to replay Doom 2016, it's nearly at Bloodborne's level for me last I remember, maybe Doom Eternal will be the new king.

Before I answer: I assume current generation requires the game to be available on a current gen console. PC-only games don't count? Or if PC games count, how to tell if they are current gen? A certain release date? What about remasters?

Between November 2013 and now is a fair way to do it since that's when PS4/XBOX One launched.

Was waiting for someone to mention this.

Playing Astrobot was like playing games for the very first time all over again. It evoked the same wonder and excitement I remember while playing Sonic and Mario twenty-something years ago. It's a priceless experience.
This thread would be full of Astrobot votes but theres only a few million psvrs, so most everyone misses out.

Its probably my #3 this gen and I don't like platformers.

A tough call between BotW and No Man’s Sky. NMS wins though because it’s the game of childhood dreams and the VR aspect elevates it to legendary status for me.

The Witcher 3, nothing more to say.

God of War, Yakuza 0, Dragon Quest XI, Persona 5 were other really great games, but it's the Witcher 3 that truly opened a completely new world to me.

I refuse to choose a winner out of GT: Sport, Bloodborne and MGSV. So for me it's a 3 way tie.

There's quit a few for me; i can't choose one so, these are my top 12 games so far.....i think Code Vein will be added to the list soon ;)

1. Zero: Nuregarasu no Miko
2. Salt & Sanctuary
3. CryStar
4. Lord of Apocalypse
5. Record of Grancrest War
6. BloodBorne
7. Soul Sacrifice
8. The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition
9. SHIN HAYARIGAMI 1 AND 2
10. Zombi U
11. Vampyr
12. Code Vein (Maybe)

I haven't played a lot of the mentioned games here, but for me it is probably either Monster Hunter World (mostly in respect to previous games though), Fire Emblem Three Houses or EDF 5.

If for current generation you include the switch then for me Is absolutely breath of the wild, easily the best game in the last 20 years.

Otherwise my pick Is for mgs5 the Phantom pain

Exaggerations like this are why I hope certain games/companies fail.

Alright, let me think, which games released 2014 or later and I really loved?

I must admit I found this generation to be by far the worst so far. Not a single JRPG I truly loved. My favorite developer tri-Ace released Exist Archive and Star Ocean Integrity And Faithless, but I didn't consider either as good as their previous games. The big and popular titles were all not for me either. Too text heavy, too many complex mechanics, too much menu browsing. I'm also a big Akitoshi Kawazu fan but so far he only remastered Romancing SaGa 2, which was pretty fun, but also far from my favorite SaGa entry.

So anyway, let's see which games I really liked this gen...
- Undertale
- Deltarune
- CrossCode
- Parkitect
- Slay The Spire
- They Are Billions
- Lords of the Fallen
- The Surge
- Frostpunk
- La-Mulana 2
- Tooth and Tail
- Hollow Knight
- Vaporum
- Cuphead
- Battle Brothers
- Downwell
- The Park
- Serpent in the Staglands
- Stasis
- SOMA
- Elminage Gothic
- Lords of Xulima
- Phantasy Star 20 years past
- Tetris Effect
- Lumines Remastered
- Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana
- Romancing SaGa 2 (Remastered)
- Star Ocean Integrity And Faithlessness
- Exist Archive

I'm sure I forgot something...

Alright, now I'll strike out the ones where I can find at least one title I can clearly say I enjoyed more... done... that didn't help too much.

Alright let me try to sort them...

1. SOMA
2. Undertale
3. Parkitect
4. Slay The Spire
5. Hollow Knight
6. Lumines Remastered
7. Deltarune
8. They Are Billions
9. The Surge
10. Phantasy Star 20 years past
11. Downwell
12. Vaporum
13. CrossCode
14. Elminage Gothic
15. Lords of the Fallen
16. Frostpunk
17. Tetris Effect
18. Tooth and Tail

Alright, I guess that means the answer is SOMA.

I'd say it was playing Hotline Miami on my Vita.
That felt like something really new to me style wise at the time it came out.

I really cannot understand the Bloodborne hype. For me the whole souls-formula already got stale after Demons' Souls.

I think it is Nier Automata for me. There were a lot of great games but this one gave joy I only feel every few years with a game so it has to be it :D

Man, that's a hard decision for me. I am torn between Nier Automata and Breath of the Wild. But I'll give it to Breath of the Wild because it let me feel like a child again, exploring the woods and city outskirts near near my old home.

Honorary mention: Persona 5 (best turn-based RPG I have played in years).

EDIT: Biggest surprise for me would be Monster Hunter World. That game has gotten me into Monster Hunter. And also big shoutout to the animators at Capcom. Those cooking and eating scenes are one of the most wholesome things I have ever seen in a game.

Multiplayer: Rocket League. I've been addicted since I first played it.

Single: NieR: Automatajuice or Nioh.....or Gravity Rush......Or Doom....or Alien: Isolation

Remaster: The Kingdom Hearts games. I'll always have a soft spot for their nonsense.

Driveclub. I'm still pissed off we'll never get the next game. It's one of the best racing games I've ever played. Cars handle very well, but it's not a simple arcade racer, visuals can look stunning especially when you add weather effects, the career progression is superb and the studio delivered on tons of varied content.

Forza Horizon 3 or Sea of Thieves or Life is Strange. All for different reasons.
