So gaffers, what will happen if Final Fantasy 7 remake project fail to meet square enix's expectations? Or worse if it ends up making a loss. Will square enix still make further installments? Or will they pull the plug on project and let it go the way of half life 3.

Making new games like ff16 but not what you want. I am making this thread so my fellow gamers can prepare for such possibility and not end up too disappointed.
If that happens I can only assume it would only be a matter of time before someone finds a way to traverse back to this dimension because there's no way that could happen here.

I'm not sure bud, havent seen the sales figures. Things are getting worse and worse in the UK on a daily basis. The country went into lockdown last night. I'd imagine the digital sales would have to be significantly be up to make up for the almost total loss of retail and peoples lack of cash (as they dont know when/if they will be paid while unable to work).
You were saying? ;)

Episode 2 cancelled, Tetsuya Nomura and Kitase start working with Yuji Horii on a Chrono Trigger remake in the style of DQ XI.

Haha damn. I guess the question becomes is that because of the situation or in spite of it? Doom 2016 was a surprise hit and very well received. I guess we will have to see what a few more games sell to try and predict a trend.

Still brilliant news 😁

Not likely, it going to sell a lot, FFVII Remake looks and plays really good, the music is great, the gameplay is really good, I have always hated the turn-based system, so this is more like an action game but with the use of menus and commands, I really enjoy that you can move the characters freely and attack. I can wait for the next chapters, it will be a long wait, but there should be more games to play in the mean time. I would really love a Vagrant Story remake, but my only concern would be the voice actors and what kind of English they would speak.

Have you witnessed all their attempts at making "new games?" :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_loudly_crying:
FF XV was awesome indeed.

Much better than getting stuff like Trials of Mana or FF VII Remake. I would gladly exchange remakes like that for new games instead.

I think upcoming releases should do fine or even better than predicted since more people have free time to play video games. We should be more worried about distant projects, because they may be delayed due to the virus. Even if a firm relies a lot on people working remotely there are still things that need to be done in person.

This game will annihilate sales. It will make so much massive amounts of money. It would have anyway, but the whole Covid thing is gonna send this thing so far over the top - I have no doubt in my mind at all.

Agree with most in the thread, it failing is essentially impossible.

But if it did, they'd probably drop it completely and move everyone onto FF XVI.

But that ain't gonna happen.

This is really going to be interesting to watch. I'm not buying as I'm waiting for either a cheap price on PC for the first episode or the entire thing to come as a collection in 5+ years. I'm sure there are others like me, then you have people with limited disposable income right now due to our buddy COVID-19. You have reduced retail presence, you have Tifa-gate (read boobs) haters, you have gameplay purists that didn't like the button mashy stuff. It's going to be very interesting to see if FF7 as a brand and a nostalgia magnet can overcome all of this stuff and sell gangbusters.

I personally think it will sell modestly, but cause SE to panic thereby dropping the quality of the remaining entries if we get them. Hope I'm wrong!

Its not getting dropped, the next parts are gonna be cheaper and faster to make. Its the same reason they made 3 entries for FF13 even though the sales kept going lower and lower.

Normally I'd agree with you, but look at what they did with the FFXV DLC, dropped it like a bad habit despite all of the resources and assets available to them. I mean, FFXV was the 4th highest selling FF game in the series, so it's not like the userbase wasn't there, so there is precedent. XV definitely didn't have the fanfare or the sales of FF7 though, so it's hard to say.

Who wouldn't wan't to buy a remake of an incomplete game that's changing the complete genre it was originally built as?!

I don't hope for it's failure, I suspect that once people run out of content and it's not the end of the actual FF7 game it will not be received well specifically for so much hype and so much time taken to release.

I won't be touching it until it's a complete product likely on PS5 and even then I will never pay full price.

Yeah, a total remake of one of the most highly lauded video games ever created won't sell well.

Might as well start a thread asking about what happens if the fucking sun crashes into the earth.

If it doesn't sell? I don't think they have a choice I think they have to finish it at this point the backlash would be like never before seen if they just left it at Midgar.

Having said that, I think there is going to be backlash anyway from people who pick it up casually shopping around and expect the full game. They aren't exactly advertising it as just part 1 and not everyone hangs out on gaming forums to know it only will be.

I do not think there is a chance in hell it will fail to sell well, but if it does, my guess is Square would focus on improving it and trying to resell it, as they have done with other titles. Then take those lessons they learned to developing a better second chapter or whatever they're calling them.

Let's be honest this is one of the most anticipated games in years. I think you're looking at 10m on PlayStation 4 alone. Lifetime sales but I really do think the remake will shadow the success of FFXV and hopefully it'll make Square remember what makes Final Fantasy so special.

It will sell well, probably. If anything maybe SE itself is setting up too high of their expectations.

I'd imagine they make a fraction of the money from DLC that they do from new games even if it costs less to make and the director left the company.

It’s plausible they won’t make much money if they don’t sale well. But people are having a hard time paying the bills with what’s going on in the world.. so yeah .. priority

Its going to sell well... its freaking FF7 first of all and due to Coronavirus, everyone is either bored at home or bored at the hospital... plus that $1000 stimulus check

What I'm expecting is that the first part will sell really well but will actually turn out to be a crappy game, so then part 2 will flop and part 3 will be canned.

Why do you expect that to happen? Squeenix's bad track record?
Yeah, haven't liked a Final Fantasy game since X, so it's been a while. Hoping it'll be good though of course, but I'm definitely not boarding the hype train with these Devs at the wheel.

I'm in a similar boat - I took Squeenix off my "developers who can do no wrong" list around the mid 2000s. However, the demos of this game that I've played have been great, and seeing the developers talk about their love for this game and needing to do right by it gives me confidence.

Just the effort they put into the remade soundtrack alone is phenomenal.

Well they definitely deliver on the OST (so far) as well as the graphics actually, which are stunning but so did FF13 and....yeah. I don't want to be too much of a doomsayer though, we'll have to see how this ends up but I'd just encourage people to keep in mind that demos do not a game make.

100% Yes, they very much will continue it as I see it massively unlikely they stop development as that doesn't really make much sense.

I see this title breaking many records for them.

Also I'm sure the team even making FF16 isn't the team that currently working on FFVII remake.
