I'm curious about this. With focus shifting to the 3DS, and Skyward Sword likely launching in the first half of 2011, what sort of Wii games do you think Nintendo will unveil for release in 2011?
This year we learned about -- and then received -- such titles as Kirby's Epic Yarn and Donkey Kong Country Returns. I'm digging the 2D platformer renaissance, so I'm hoping it'll continue in 2011. How about a new Yoshi's Island? Like DKCR, it could be fully constructed of polygons. And like Epic Yarn, it could have an inspired arts-and-crafts aesthetic -- maybe cel-shading with crayon coloring? It'd be a great year-end release, and a fresh way to add another Mario title without it being just another Mario title.
The above is more fantasy than anything; we don't have any reason to suspect there'll be a YI title. But if Nintendo wants to make another 2D platformer, it's certainly a viable franchise to do so.
I strongly suspect we'll finally see Pikmin 3. Miyamoto confirmed this past E3 that Pikmin is still in development for Wii. I was lukewarm on the first Pikmin but absolutely LOVED Pikmin 2 -- shame the latter never got a proper New Play Control release -- and I'm looking forward to what Olimar does next. Another colorful, undeniably Nintendo title to keep my Wii warm and inviting next to my PS3. (That's not a comparison -- I love them both!)
The two obvious franchises in need of an update are Star Fox and F-Zero, and while I won't speculate or wish-list who should handle them (oh what the hell, Retro Studios or Treasure or EAD Tokyo for Star Fox and Retro Studios or Amusement Vision or maybe Nintendo Software Technology for F-Zero), it seems like both would really flesh out Nintendo's 2011 offerings. Fast, fluid, accessible gameplay, IP star power and brand recognition -- if Nintendo keeps reaching into its bag of tricks, surely it'll pull these rabbits at some point... Right?
The quick and easy money-makers would be a Pokemon Battle Revolution 2 to facilitate 3D battling of the 156 brand new Black and White Pokemon (including the Dark/Steel-type Power Ranger in my avatar!), and I think it's time for a Mario Party 10 (yes, in 2011!).
And finally, maybe we'll see Nintendo doing with the Wii what they said they'll do with the DS -- namely, taking formerly Japan-only titles and localizing them for foreign markets in the system's twilight years. Will the U.S. finally see Another Code R and Disaster: Day of Crisis? Maybe even Captain Rainbow?
And then there's always the question of what Nintendo's wild card could be. This year it was arguably Kid Icarus: Uprising on 3DS. But it's fun to think they may be pull one with Wii. Hard to think what titles they could tap, though. Many will say Star Tropics, but I don't know anything about Star Tropics, so it's hard to imagine what a modern-day version would be like...
Well, your turn! And rather than just listing franchise names, it'd be nice if you could explain your thoughts on either why it will happen, or why it'd be cool to see come true.
