Whats the Current Status of GAF in general right now?

It's fine, but people talk about/reference Era way too often, it's obnoxious. Wish people could keep it to the community thread it belongs in.

unfortunately not enough dedicated power users to keep communities and up to the minute news going.

its slow, but its growing. nothing you can do really.

i havent noticed the RE talk as much as you point out, but one thing that i do love is the designated politics channel.

Nah, what we need is a dedicated ResetERA sub-forum. You know you want it.

On a more serious note, a feedback bulletin detailing what things are being implemented would be nice.

The biggest of them all though: Sticky the Ban Justice thread. I don't want to sound obnoxious but i have requested this a few times now and others want this aswell. It seems rather pointless to have a Ban Justice thread when it is not visible as a sticky.

Things seem to have grown pretty well. There's now a nice steady flow of conversation here. As others have said there's still a little too much talk about Resetera. But I feel like things are definitely moving in the right direction.

One thing I really like about GAF now is that people take time to write proper, extensive answers. Others than neckerz too.

I think it’s a function of lower poster count. You know your post won’t get buried in three minutes, so you can put effort into it. This has created really interesting discourses that are also fun to follow.

A subreddit called kotakuinaction is imploding. SJW Supermoderators got hold of its modship and are working to destroy it from within. 100,000 potential members for gaf. If only 5% made their way here this place would grow significantly. They tend to mostly be libertarian types. No risk of tipping the ideological boat so to speak.

Sadly most of them still think gaf is a place like resetera, worse, they think you need a paid email to join up. There needs to be an active drive to show that isn't the case. I'm 100% done with reddit. It is astroturfed to hell, and wholly owned by big corporate and big government pushing agendas left and right. This forum is now more open and less tightly controlled than most other platforms. The perfect storm is brewing. Don't miss this train EviLore EviLore . Also be honest with us and yourself into perpetuity. Nothing truly bad has ever come from that.

I believe the referencing has to do with the fact Era has sort of come to represent the sort of mentality that many see as detrimental to constructive criticism or discussion. Of course having splintered from Neogaf, its the most obvious comparison group that users here would be familiar with, in the same way people would talk about what a clusterfuck something like reddits Trump thread is.

It's just a 'go to' to express how confronting or unreasonable some views are.

I view Resetera quite a bit just to keep up with news etc, but some of the discusssions, or more specifically the out of control hot takes are eye openers.

It isn't solely due to a lower poster count, though.

The mods do a good job of discouraging drive-by and inflammatory behavior. When there's blood in the water, the posts get shorter because people are hungry to make their mark on an epic thread. When people have to actually argue against the other person's points and come up with an explanation for their reasoning, it naturally lends to longer posts.

This environment is uncharitable to drive-bys and hot takes, and that's in large part due to the moderation.

All that said, as one of the local blabbermouths I am happy that people are attracted to the longer posts and in-depth discourse.

Could you (or someone) explain in detail the whole thing with KiA? I feel like everyone in the world knows but me. I have no idea what the subreddit is even about in its entirety, as I too am moving away from the media site.

I quit reddit a while ago and basically only use it now to ask very specific questions with throwaway accounts. I checked out KIA today while asking a vape question elsewhere. I haven't been there since some mod drama a few years after it started, and it's like what the fuck is that place anymore? I don't know how anyone in their right mind would want to maintain a reddit account and wade through those comment sections, not only because of the often shitty redditors but the site and it's workings are not very intuitive.

KiA is a subreddit created after the whole gamergate debacle in 2014. When games journos (led by kotaku) got caught covering and protecting in-group corruption, and declared gamers dead. The sub was created as an official forum for exposing unethical behaviour in games journalism.

Post 2016 election it was thrown into the whole alt-right bandwagon (because it doesn't tow the standard agenda) and things got dicey when new rules were imposed on 'dissident' subs, KiA among them. Moderators of KiA were forced to adopt those special dissident sub rules. An example of such a rule is; your sub users can't link to other subs; but if other subs dogpile your sub, ban users for posting there, etc reddit management won't do anything to uphold sitewide rules in KiA's favor.

Recently new moderators were added, and they began going above and beyond this unequal treatment-introducing rules that basically cripple discourse, forbidding most self posts; thus making it very easy for mods to direct discussions about ongoing issues and to control was is and isn't posted there.

Right now there is an ongoing userbase revolt and a huge influx of fake accounts that are inciting various agendas from falon gong affiliated anti-chinese youtube channels that have nothing to do with games and journalism to just random divide and conquer tactics by ultra conservative anti-vaxxing maga-tards to far-left AstroTurfers from correct the record peddling the usual muh russiah fare. All semblance of normal discourse is being drowned out.

It became very...artificial overnight. Like the conspiracy sub, news, worldnews, politics etc it is going down the same path, into a sad and highly deviant reflection of its former self; it is turning into a shill infested train wreck...a mosh-pit of extremists.

HI folks

Just so everyone is aware, we're doing some dev testing in the background that we don't want to go too much into detail on. We're hoping delivery will be in the short term for sure. And then we can move onto the next big three deliverables which EviLore EviLore will share when we have something formal drafted.

In terms of the drama happening - not just at KiA, but patreon, twitter etc. we're hoping that Gaf's current position (with moderator's that have no interest in driving discussions that adhere to a certain alignment) is something that encourages more people to return/join us. For what it's worth the quality and value of posts is largely good, but slower. There is less reaction and more substance. Also, although most of you won't see clear actions like reply bans we do use them in order to quell massive derails. We just don't jump the gun, and allow a bit of time for the troublesome posters to run out of steam and be discredited or alternatively change their opinion through reflection.

What's interesting is that those users considering leaving KiA and reddit would be well suited to the new community changes we are testing. We're aware communities are stalled somewhat, but the resurgence of what we're going to make them depends on some infrastructure changes and back end upgrades. The mods and admins are quite excited about them. And while we're rightly having some organic and steady growth we feel this is what will really set us apart and be a USP.

And yes, we are aware in the current political climate that those trying to besmirch the name of neogaf are using the same tired cliche references with no evidence and then propagating this through the social media channels. Personally, I take heart that the established narrative now is that the split has caused an offshoot capable, and responsible for far worse than what neoGaf ever did. It's somewhat ironic that the site that started up and tried to shed the stigma of the previous site, has now stigmatised the newGAFs direction. But that's an aside. Somewhere, as this storm is weathered, what we offer will become more valuable and more noticed and we welcome all (old and new members).

Redneckerz Redneckerz we don't want to have too many stickies in OT but I'll humour you and we'll see how it goes with a month's worth of sticky white stuff.

You moderator staff walk through the discussions at the GAF offices every day?

I got one of those myself this week.

Those were dark times.

The inablity to not prove someone wrong... suddenly i had free time and space. So i played a game instead :p

In all seriousness i understood why but we do need to have a heart to heart with posters that attract commentary purely for the kind of content that they post.

It's somewhat ironic that the site that started up and tried to shed the stigma of the previous site, has now stigmatised the newGAFs direction. But that's an aside.

There’s porn on Reddit? My normal brain could never understand its schizophrenic fever dream layout enough to navigate it.

It's a damn sight better than it was a few months ago.

Honestly though, the whole site needed (still needs) a reboot/simplifying. While the new features are fine, it just feels over-engineered.

Resetera isn't going anywhere, so for NeoGAF to be successful in the long term, it needs a new angle rather than just being another forum.

Personally, I would've nuked Communities a long time ago. Absolutely nothing go on in those sub-forums and they just serve as a reminder how much the dynamic of this forum has changed.

I think this forum could use a better variety of emojis. And also the lack of reactions on each post is hurting this place a bit too.

Look at another forum like systemwars.com, which has a far more advanced emoji usage https://systemwars.net/bb/topic/205...build-videos-on-youtube-via-copyright-claims/
And also notice that each post can have not just a generic 'thumbs up', but also a 'thanks', 'confusion', dislike etc. This could make posting here a lot more fun I think.

Nah, I like the minimalistic layout here. I wouldn’t change a thing about it except maybe adding a rotten leg emoji.

This place is growing again.

Resetera is out of control with the mods there, constantly banning people for the slightest infraction or opinion that differs from their own, loads of mods with agendas too (Xbox fanboy mod seems to be banning any debate on crossplay that isn't calling out Sony or criticising Crackdown 3, for example).

I haven't been on Reddit in quite some time but I did frequent KiA a lot. What happened? How did an sjw mod get on the mod team?

Dwell into some of the current and former meta threads on there to see more details. One of the original creators of the sub went crazy few months back and conspired with hostile reddit amins to try and get the sub shut down. From then things have been going downhill. There are good days and bad days. Lately very frequent bad days.

??? Being a bit harsh if you ask me.

Anyway, I maintain that some kind of outreach to these places in turmoil is an ideal way to bring a great deal of quality activity to this place.

Feeling great about my decision to return to GAF last October, it may have seemed like a controversial move back then, but time and again it has proven to have been the right choice. Activity has increased to pretty much an optimal level now, threads get quality replies but I don’t miss 10 pages if I blink.

More importantly today, a legendary return to the good times of GAF, welcome back HUELEN10 HUELEN10 ! Awesome to have you in GAF again, your hype is positively contagious!

Has the number of users increased?
Activity seems to be higher, but everytime I check how many people are online, it always seems to be around 200, it's been like for the past 3 or 4 months.

We’re in a better place right now. I haven’t seen many suicide accounts lately, people joining daily and the admins are cool unless you’re a piece of shit. Me and many of other members are trying to put work especially on the gaming section. Thank you all :)

I left back in 2015 when the insanity was beginning to reach it's peak levels. I was surprised when some folks on twitter and Niche gamer mentioned gaf had changed, so I decided to stop by to see for myself. I was pleased to see actual debate and discussion again. Conservatives and liberals going back and forth. Not always civil, but different opinions were acceptable. When I saw the thread about fan service and it wasn't immediately inundated with self righteous hate, I decided to return.
The forum doesn't move at the break neck pace it once did, but I feel comfortable here again.
