What's the point of "requested" bans?

EDIT: I'm mostly talking about the non-permanent requested bans. Like, "i want to get banned for a while and then come back in a month or two" types.

I'm NOT talking about attention seeking account suicides either.

I see more and more popular/liked members being banned and when i get to the ban sections it seems some of them are requesting them. Thankfully for a short time.

While it's great to see that these members didn't get perma ban for some dumb thing and they will return, i still don't see the point of requesting a ban. Can't you just not post/browse GAF? Is it a power of will thing?

Some people request a ban without making a scene. I guess some people can't control themselves and eventually realise they are spending too much time on the internet.

I don't get it personally, it's not retardera where you're being squashed by the mods for not staying quiet and not agreeing with their point of view 110%.

A sense of Nirvana to see the True Friends of GAF from those who like to bring this place to Avicii.

It is also to play more games as well. Getting stuff done!

That seems reasonable, yeah. So it's a power of will. If you can't get off GAF you ask the mods to keep you out for a while.

No, not everyone can do that especially if GAF is in their daily routine if not an all day activity. So the simplest thing to do is request a self-ban for some time and then you come back fresh

Having a time off every now and then is refreshing. I’m sure Tesseract got a lot of shit to do right now and doesn’t need any distractions

I'm guessing this is a reason for requesting a ban for a period of time. I'm assuming if you can't control your own time online (for various reasons), ask a moderator to enforce a period of time away by instilling a timed-ban

It kinda makes sense, but you know when you get rid of a hobby, you just replace it with another one. So they prob just went off to another forum.

I think as you get older, it's much easier. Life simply gets in the way.

It's just a self control thing, some people have less than others. I eat too much. Tesseract spends way too much time shitposting on GAF. With self bans you remove any temptation because you literally can't do it.

It's something a lot of people need to start doing with their mobile devices, or at least Twitter.

Fair. You know, I'm sure everyone has that 'thing' that they can't put down.

Sometimes I think I need a temp beer-ban.
Yeah, true. I got similar things too and it makes me feel weak. That’s why I started dealing them by myself

Like when I wanted to quit smoking and the cig won every time. I said “no. Fuck you bitch! I’m in control not you” and I quit smoking in one day

It's real simple. People need a break but they know that the lure of GAF is too much so an enforced break is required.

Personally I've requested a temp ban before when I have had to get on with RL stuff for a period.

I'd like the ability to self suspend if that's possible. With a different message versus banned and a clear expiry date. Plus no clogging up the ban page.

That is remarkable and impressive self-control considering it's also a chemical addiction. Congrats on that.

Requesting a ban and putting people on ignore. On an internet forum are two things i'll never understand.

I don't care where (just far)

It just comes down to different strokes for different folks. I think ignore functions are pivotal features, and I can understand why people don’t use them even if I think they are necessary.

They do seem to fall in line with one another, as I feel people who need a temp self-ban also probably use the ignore function, while people who would never request one probably never use ignore.

🤷‍

people work in different ways. As long as no harm is being caused by either method, it’s all good

In a cave outside of Whooville.
Let's really start getting specific. Maybe some users are supposed to practice piano from 4-5pm EST or their parents get mad. Just ban them on a daily basis during those hours! Maybe some people are supposed to pick up their wife's kid from school at 3pm but they can't pull themselves away from the politics section. Daily time-window bans for everyone!
