What's with all the hipster commercials?

Are they really their own demographic now? I thought those awful Kin and Miracle Whip commercials were the worst of it...but I can't flip through channels without seeing those homicide-inducing Hyundai commercials with Pomplamoose destroying Christmas songs with all the sex appeal of an autistic child. Honda is using Vampire Weekend on their Civic commercials. Do hipsters even drive? Tommy Hilfiger (the authority on hipster fashion, I guess) also uses the same Vampire Weekend song for their holiday commercial. McDonald's runs commercials with two hipsters doing some sort of synchronized drumming on their table as they enjoy their caramel mocha frappe.

I feel so old, intolerant, and out of touch. :(

That McDonald's commercial actually stars a performance duo that do really snazzy hand dances. They have a website, but I can't remember the names for the life of me. They're South American, I know that.

The rest of the stuff, I don't know. There was even that Honda Jazz commercial, "How many hipsters can you fit in a Jazz," it was incredibly stupid. Hipster-dom is breaking into the mainstream, especially in fashion. It's a very urban style, and people really like the whole "look cheap without being cheap" aesthetic (this goes beyond just clothing and into food and entertainment). Everything at this point can be commercialized and profited from, so you're going to see a huge decline in the "counter-culture" being underground.

Hipsters drive Volkswagen vehicles anyways. If they have more money they can usually be seen in Hybrid or Audi vehicles.

Vampire Weekend are hip, but the Bucktown-living hipsters probably prefer Deerhunter.

Flannel and scarves are what 20-somethings wear nowadays.

Wait.

So.

If hipster-dom is mainstream now... then to be a hipster, who does the opposite of mainstream, you have to... be mainstream?

But if mainstream IS hipster, then hipster is still hipster, except it's not because it's also mainstream.

Therefore, 1=0.

That's the one I thought of when I saw the thread title. I was thinking, those are the asses that post on GAF these days! Me being immune to that statement since I started posting in the 90s.

The hipster whining is as tedious as the hipsters themselves, you guys act like you never come across a sub-culture before.

Is Vampire Weekend really hipster? Does merely having a song from a so called "hipster" band playing in the background qualify it as a "hipster" commercial? You don't think that maybe hey...they just actually like the song on its own merits, or see the demographic it pertains to as "young" rather than some loosely defined sub-class? Have you told any kids to get off your lawn recently?

Holy fuck, can we let the hipster hate die already? It's getting so tiring to see every other thread bashing "hipsters." We get it, you're cool for bashing something popular.

It's like the people who can't wait to bash Apple, as soon as they see the company's name they rush to post "Hipster computer lolz!!" like Pavlovian dogs. Just STFU already about hipsters, your ranting about them is far more annoying than they ever are.

Not as tedious as the "hipster whining" whining.

In all seriousness, hipsters get brought up in the threads I read once or twice a week, aside from the Scoot Pilgrim week where there were 2-3 threads a day. It's hard to get worked up over something that doesn't really happen all that often compared to other things talked about here.

We WANT this bullshit to become mainstream so it can quickly die out. Now that it's being commercialized like everything else a year or two too late, we can enjoy it's on coming demise.

I'm not whining about the abhorrence of these things as much as I'm trying to figure out who the fuck they are targeting with these campaigns. Running commercials like this on ESPN seems like such a bad idea.

Hipsterism is an empty sub-culture, it has no substance.
The only thing they do have is uniformity, and many of them do indeed love Vampire Weekend.
So yeah, that would make them a hipster band.

These were non-stop during the Heat game last night. I'm not sure the urban market is the best place to showcase these two's boorish styles.

I thought the word "hipster" referred to a demeanor, like Cosmo Kramer's way of life, and not a dress/grooming style. Was I always wrong or has it just changed in usage?

Knew the Hyundai commercial would get a mention as soon as I saw the thread title. It's on constantly, I want to rip my ears off.

These threads are the modern equivalent of an old '70s hippie in the late '80s seeing guys in high-tops, neon shirts, and denim jackets and wondering why everyone's so fucking weird.

Wearing a scarf is perfectly okay as long as you...
1) Wear it when it's actually cold outside.
2) Wear one.
3) Don't buy a keffiyah.
