Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
As a kid I'd get creative and give my characters names I thought were clever or sounded fancy (looking at some old save files, yikes), but now I stick with the default option if there is one. If there is a canon/official name for a character, I leave it as is. I can't imagine playing Chrono Trigger as anything but Crono, or Zelda as anything but my character named Link (though I was really tempted to change Poo's name in Earthbound though during my recent 1st playthrough on Wii U... Like really? Poo?).
If the game's main character is player created (Skyrim, Fallout etc.) then I use either my first name or middle name.
If the game is an RPG where the entire team has no canon name (like Final Fantasy 1 for example) then I'll just use names I like (either friends or names I've made up) with the "lead character" having my first or middle name.
If there is an animal in the game I'll give it my cat's name :3
What do you do:
-get creative (like giving your character the names of the Seinfeld cast or making up your own names)?
-stick with the default option?
-use your own name?
-use something ridiculous that's funny that'll make every dialogue section a laugh riot?
-or another option if there is one?
