When games give you the option to name characters do you use DEFAULT or get creative?

enigmatic_alex44

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
As a kid I'd get creative and give my characters names I thought were clever or sounded fancy (looking at some old save files, yikes), but now I stick with the default option if there is one. If there is a canon/official name for a character, I leave it as is. I can't imagine playing Chrono Trigger as anything but Crono, or Zelda as anything but my character named Link (though I was really tempted to change Poo's name in Earthbound though during my recent 1st playthrough on Wii U... Like really? Poo?).

If the game's main character is player created (Skyrim, Fallout etc.) then I use either my first name or middle name.

If the game is an RPG where the entire team has no canon name (like Final Fantasy 1 for example) then I'll just use names I like (either friends or names I've made up) with the "lead character" having my first or middle name.

If there is an animal in the game I'll give it my cat's name :3

What do you do:

-get creative (like giving your character the names of the Seinfeld cast or making up your own names)?
-stick with the default option?
-use your own name?
-use something ridiculous that's funny that'll make every dialogue section a laugh riot?
-or another option if there is one?

I used to use my gaming tag (Cyryus) but after playing the Mass Effect series, I decided for once to try out the default name and it felt so right so ever since, been using default.

I'm always goofing about.

Until recently I have always named everyone either Trey, Kenta, or Genesis. Those were either my OC I made growing up (Genesis sure isn't try hard at all) or my real name. Lately I've been using my online nicknames I've gotten in GAF chat rooms we've started, so often I'm Shery or Sugoi.

Depends. As far as I'm concerned, Link is Link. For a game with some generic soldier or something, I'll go ahead and enter my own name.

I usually use my own name, or Zareka for MMOs and stuff like Dragon's Dogma/Skyrim. I have a different name for female characters.

Never default though, that's way too boring. I like to make the character my own at least a little bit.

I usually name characters after old Final Fantasy characters and if it's an RPG I play it as if it was them. So if I name a Skyrim character Locke, you bet your bippy that I'm a thief.

Always Mu if I can. Works well for male or female.

For games with generated characters like an SRPG, I use Phantasy Star IV and Skies of Arcadia names. I generally don't rename static party members like in older FF games, although I called Red XIII 'Kitty' for some reason.

In XCOM I name my soldiers after friends with classes/roles appropriate to the archetypes they play in online games. Also I always try to have a frontline assault named Takeru Shirogane.

J/C RPGs = I leave the original name (in the latter case for the party members).

Otherwise, "Zukuu" at all times.

Mostly I'll use my own name if is a more simulation kind of game.

For the fantasy stuff, I usually go through a rotation of names that I stick with for a while before moving on to a new handle. Of late (Pillars of Eternity, etc.) I've been going with Angkor Wat. I like the way it rolls of the tongue.

Typically Aesnath, or maybe Richter--I'm not that creative.

My daughter is on a kick of naming characters "Toast!" and then naming other characters after breakfast food or paraphernalia. Ah, to be young again...

I always go as default since I'm not a super creative person. (when I have to name someone, everyone is always Windir for male and Chloe for female. :D )

This thread reminds me of a guy from Dtoid who said he always named his JRPG characters, "I say, I say" so everyone in the game would sound like Foghorn Leghorn when talking to you. :D Good times.

I'll usually use the default name if there is one, as it helps make things easier to discuss afterwards. I made the mistake once with Earthbound, and their actual names don't come naturally to me now. I guess it may not be a huge deal in Earthbound, as the game clearly wants you to enter your own values, but it makes it harder to share your experiences.

default always.

I am currently playing golden sun 2 and at the beginning I was asked to confirm the main character's name, which is Felix. By mistake I deleted the last character of his name, no now his name is Feli. It's bothering me so much, that I am tempted to restart the game just because of that. But I am almost 20h in :(

Default, but if the name is in all caps, I fix it (LINK -> Link).

If the game has a character creator, like Dark Souls, then I use an original name.

Default but I fix capped names like above poster.

If it's an option where the character has no name, then I come up with something. Never anything good unfortunately.

I usually use default. Expect on Pokemon games. There my rival is usually Dickless or something. Also my pokemons are usually word games and such.

Unless I feel the character is already well defined I either use my nick or try to get creative, but I'm terrible at it.

I'd have a hard time changing Felix's name considering you can't change his name in the first game.

As kids, my brother and I would always name our characters / pokemon crazy names. We found out this didn't help when we consulted Tips N' Tricks guides or GameFAQs ("Wait, who is Terra?"). So for the last decade or so I've been using the default names.

There are some names that I can't help but associate with the character just because of how often we would play the games with bizarre names, an example would be:
IX2mTw6.jpg

The fat guy on the far right from Wave Race 64 would always be named "Bean Dip" - with his costume color changed so that mark on his butt would be brown.

i use default if it's a cool name, if not my PSN ID, if not then i use (not) very creative 12 year old thought-like funny names like Fuck You, etc etc you get the gist

in MMOs or with online play is harder though because they ban you and what not

Did you guys know if you name Link ZELDA in Link's Awakening, bizarre music will play on that screen? Freaked me out when I discovered that, but I don't think it does anything special beyond that.

that looks like an RPG, did you name another character in the game Anus don't lie

Given the chance, i always change the name. It's usually Ember, and i've created this imaginary world, where this character is telling her grandkids a lot of diferent adventures where she is always the hero.

I have (apparently according to some people), a talent for telling stories to kids, and i hope to create a book of sorts when i have my own kids.

Always default if it's available. I'm boring and I don't want to spend too much time coming up with a character name.

I just name main characters either Linux or Feete. If I'm playing a game with creatable generics I name them after characters I like at the time or friend's net handles.

Default in a story driven game (RPG/Adventure/etc). If it's a game where you HAVE to name a PC like Skate or something I will always name my character Dork. Kind of like, I've decided on this multi-purpose name I shall use it forever now.

In Zelda, I always name Link my actual first name. In nearly every other game, I leave the default names.

If it's a JRPG and there are several characters I have to name, I just name them after my friends in real life.

So they all end up being called:

When I'm lazy or when its a second playthrough, I go with the Default.

If its for the first time, I might get creative.

For JRPGs, I go with Kei or Keiichi for males. For females, I go with Keiko.

Default for the most part

if given a gender choice and name choice (such as the pogeymangs), I do name the protag eclair or claire
