Garry Whitta, neogaf user says about neogaf's posters:

"Everytime you have a certain knowledge of a certain subject and you see how much ignorance there is out there, When you see people who have no knowledge of neither, outside of their perspective opinion, I often have to hold my tongue and remind myself how little their opinion is worth, just become it's not coming from a position of someone with knowledge"

How does the OT feels about this?

Everyone has opinions. Some are just dumber and more proud of their stupid opinions than others. (Not referring to G-Whitta, but about those who he talks about)

Eh, people have opinions. Some people have informed opinions and some people don't. The ones that do are the ones I find myself listening to, in any event.

I think we've all felt that way at some point during our time here. But I feel compelled to say that YOUR MOVIE IS GOING TO BOMB BRO.

Edit: I always expected Evilore to have the accent of a Polish immigrant. I don't know why. Kind of surprised by the varsity style.

lots of merit to what he's saying about people and forums in general. himself included, nobody is above doing what he describes though some are much better at educating themselves and holding their tongue when they feel they're responding more from their gut than their head.

Meh. Everyone comments on stuff they have little knowledge of, some present their opinion as informed when its anything but, others are more honest and confess to their ignorance and willingness to learn. I'm sure Whitta himself chats a lot of shite, eitehr on here or elsewhere. Its the human condition.

He's correct and a huge reason why I rarely participate in message board film conversation anymore. It'd be one thing if some people didn't pretend to know so much or force their opinions down everyone's throats.

The general public is letting their opinion known this weekend. The prognosis isn't good, Gary.

Peter Travers isn't a fan either:

After Earth merits comparison with 2000's Battlefield Earth, John Travolta's godawful film tribute to the sci-fi novel by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. Yes, it's that bad. This time poor, ravaged Earth, uninhabitable by humans, is occupied by predatory birds, monkeys and tacky computer-generated aliens. So what are Will Smith, 44, and his son Jaden Smith, 14, doing there? Ask Big Willie, he dreamed up the story. What we see on screen, with a sodden script co-written by Gary Whitta and director M. Night Shyamalan (a galaxy away from the glory days of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs), is an unholy mess of platitudes and posturing that makes 90 minutes drag on like a life sentence. Daddy Smith plays Cypher, the militarist leader of Nova Prime, the planet where humans live after they destroyed nature's balance 1000 years ago. Cypher is one stoic, thin-lipped dude. No wonder his son, Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith), can't get close to him. Kitai can't even cut it in the United Ranger Corps, where his father is considered a God. OK, he's a general, but you take my point. What can bring father and son together? A disaster, of course. When a spaceship crash strands Cypher and Kita on Earth, the boy must become a man. Cue the clichés. Cypher breaks both his legs. This means he sits around staring at computer screens while sonny boy does the heavy lifting, running a 60-mile obstacle course to another part of the ship's wreckage to recover a beacon that will save the day and both their lives. If you're thinking this movie won't be going where you think it's going, snap out of it. So what we have here is a Will Smith, devoid of humor, charm and screen time, waiting in the car while his kid does the driving. Whaat? The young Smith has energy, but not the acting chops. And he's no miracle worker. The burden of carrying this dull, lifeless movie is just too much. And it's hell on an audience. It's not a good sign when you sit there thinking – Make. It. Stop.

It's terribly written.

Someone's got sand in their vagina over opinions held about After Earth.

Seriously - knowledge is infinitely subjective. Just because the average idiot with no knowledge expresses an opinion, who is anyone to say it has no worth? Its OK Gary - I'm sometimes shit at my job too. Don't listen to them, their ignorant its all ignorance.

The kid's name sounds like Kitty Rage.

He's correct. People like to talk as though they are experts on certain topics, but if you happen to actually work in that field, the shit they say is eye-rolling. It's not unique to GAF.

Edit: but evaluating a film does not require specialized knowledge, so his statement has no application in this context.

I see nothing controversial here. Informed opinions are worth more than uninformed opinions. I'm sure I have plenty of both.

I'm sorry, but you don't need to be an expert to see what a stupid idea it is to westernize Akira by having Japan buy Manhattan and rename it to Neo Tokyo.

Actually I think that's his biggest problem, he just thinks the rest of the world / his movie audience is just plain dumb. You don't need to come up with an overly complex explanation of everything, for us to understand.

I haven't watched the video yet but does this even have anything to do with After Earth? The quote seems to just be a general feeling about GAF overall... which isn't really wrong per se but he himself is guilty of doing the same things too.

The general public doesn't know what it's talking about.

He's absolutely right. When it comes to talking about how the gaming industry works, I'm pretty much clueless. I'm glad of that, since I don't like how the industry works.

He is right. And as expected, feelings were caught by the insecure.

Not a fan of AEarth, but that doesn't make him wrong here. We are all guilty of it at some point.

He is right but at the same time saying that is just a really easy way to dismiss someones opinion.

Saying "your opinion is worth nothing" is much easier than having to actually explain why someones opinion could be wrong.

Lol, classic defense. Somehow negative opinions always seem to require qualification while positive ones do not. Oh, you loved the movie? Thanks so much, I really appreciate the support. You hated it? Well, your opinion isn't really worth that much anyway.

How childish.

It's the same shit Shyamalan said after The Last Airbender. Terrible movies are terrible guys; just because you spent millions of dollars doesn't mean you are owed praise.

It happens with every topic. Yeah, everybody has a right to an opinion. That doesn't make it worth anything.
I wish more people who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about would just keep their stupid opinions to themselves and STFU. More often than not they're a complete waste of posts and the board gets flooded with useless content.

It is one thing to write a movie and another thing for someone to criticize it. It takes far more effort, far more agonizing, and far more creativity to build. Tearing something down it easy.

As well, you would probably think that the Wachowski's could write for shit if you saw their name attached to Assasins. They you would read the actual script they wrote and wondered why it didn't appear on screen.

Execution is 99% of everything when it comes to film.
