Most of those 'foreigners' are Germans, which the Swiss hate for some reason (I suspect it's one of those "dey took ar jerbs" things).Just look at the PISA studies, Switzerland is on the top quarter of all participated countries and the population is like 30% foreigners.
You forgot to get in a dig at Australians, Sharkx.
Come on thread, get good. I'm in a lot of pain and I could use that good ol' bannin' high.
Misinformation and stereotypes: The thread.
There's a lot of xenophobism, I give you that, but some countries have integrated foreigners way more successful than the US have ever done. Just look at the PISA studies, Switzerland is on the top quarter of all participated countries and the population is like 30% foreigners.
First I'm hearing of this... between casually using the n word, wearing blackface, throwing bananas at black athletes and making monkey sounds, all the crazy far right politicians... Europe basically sounds like the 1950s South.
As someone who has spent half his life in the north and half his life in the south, I can say without hesitation this is utterly false. They don't have any black people.
Same reason Northerners are more racist than Southerners.
That statement is half a century too old... Did you learn that from history books? Also a lot of "immigrants" are in Europe aren't actually immigrants. They're foreign temporary workers, so they're in for short contract work (3-5 years). They're not allowed to bring their families so this makes true integration impossible, which doesn't help with the image of more settled immigrant communities.
Oh yeah, you're right! That's not a very good example. Apart for the British, your average European is just as likely to confuse Sikhs with Muslims as your average USA-er.
so far the most racist place ive been has to be fucking spain by a mile! man i have never seen so much hate for Argentinians in my life lol.
plus i saved a man from a car accident once while walking around after leaving my cousins coffee shop and when i told the cop i was american he mad dogged me, closed the book, and told me to beat it. besides my cousin was a nazi growing up on top of it and i saw lots of swastikas on church buildings.....im just going to come out and say they be racists! lol.

Do 'boat people' (even the name seems a bit dismissive) really deserve to be such a large issue?
I blame American rap culture. And we really don't mean it in a negative way anyway, most often I would assume.here's one thing about Europeans though. They drop the word nigger as if they were saying orange. That nigger that, that nigger this.
Is it just the varying degrees of the multitude of Euro cultures or are Euros just more naturally bigoted than Americans?
US still has terrible people with license plates such as...
So I wouldn't act like it's all fun and games over on this side of the pond while everyone sings kumbaya. There are plenty of racists assholes all over the world sadly.
Is it easier for the Indian and Chinese student to come to the US, study, work, live and be accepted, or is it easier for them to go to Switzerland and do the same?
not really a reflection of europe as a whole but zwarte piet is pretty messy:
Op is probably one so he can't help you.I was hoping for a more fleshed-out OP. Like, could you provide some evidence for all the GAFers who've never been to Europe?
North America takes in largely educated and skilled immigrants in fields where workers are in demand.
Europe just takes everyone.
This is the main reason, but it can be a multitude of other reasons e.g. French ban on many Islamic symbols in public buildings causing high unemployment and ghetto-ization among immigrant communities.
Also a lot of "immigrants" are in Europe aren't actually immigrants. They're foreign temporary workers, so they're in for short contract work (3-5 years). I'm an American but I always assumed it was very easy to get citizenship in America compared to other countries. I kinda just thought you could show up and be welcomed by Lady Liberty (of course it is more complicated than that). I know there are several ways of obtaining citizenship but I don't really know how immigration to the United States works. I also assumed other countries were a lot stricter. Anyone have experience or knowledge of this?
Not to give a pass to the Americans, but AB1070, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Lou Dobbs as the height of xenophobia pale (word chosen on purpose?) in comparison to centuries of major ethnic conflicts on multiple continents.I can't believe i'm actually granting this thread a reply. But seriously wtf? It's a horrible generalization and you guys know it.
Most of the values of the xenophobic parties of at least northern europe exist in the US rightwing mainstream.
Call me when a state or national government in western/northern europe grants something like Arizona SB 1070 or when a person lile Glenn Beck would host one of the more popular shows in a western/northern european country, and where Rush Limbaugh would host the most popular radio show in the entire nation.
Is it just the varying degrees of the multitude of Euro cultures or are Euros just more naturally bigoted than Americans?
Only a little bit: http://reason.org/files/a87d1550853898a9b306ef458f116079.pdfI'm an American but I always assumed it was very easy to get citizenship in America compared to other countries. America has dealt with race issues for a longer time because of our history as an immigrant nation, slavery, civil rights struggles etc. We still struggle with it a lot.I guess European society is more homogeneous when compared to ours so that maybe a reason.
The word doesn't have the same weight in the non English speaking countries as the tend to have their own racist words for races they don't like. A lot of people just think you can use it to refer to a guy dressing like a rapper because a lot of euros learn English off the Telly.I've been to like two countries in Europe and its kinda shocking how many "niggas or niggers" I got called. I go the idea that they didn't have any idea of what the words mean and that they were just trying to be cool.
Europe was always heterogenous, now even more than ever. People in Europe have moved to other countries for decades. The bigger problem is the lack of the mentality of a migration's country like the US. That's why most countries don't make you a citizen just because you are born there, whereas you get the citizenship in the US just by being born in the right time on the right place.
Ah. Yes. There was a point in separating western/northern europe. If the question was why eastern (and to some extent southern europe) were generally more racist than the US I would not be that frustrated. Not to give a pass to the Americans, but AB1070, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Lou Dobbs as the height of xenophobia pale (word chosen on purpose?) in comparison to centuries of major ethnic conflicts on multiple continents.
I know you are only allowing Western/Northern Europe, but a certain part of Europe has been basically a never ending ethnic conflict in recent memory.
I, of course, am opposed to any collectivization in this manner and thus therefore allowed to make blanket comments on arbitrary collectives of my choosing.
Not quite. Getting citizenship in the US is pretty damn hard. Hell, even just getting a visa is quite difficult if you don't have family there. Even in some of the more "racist" countries like Japan it's much easier (I'm from Spain and working in Japan, but right now it'd be pretty damn difficult for me to go to a US company).

They're just copying black people. Blame rap music.I've been to like two countries in Europe and its kinda shocking how many "niggas or niggers" I got called. I go the idea that they didn't have any idea of what the words mean and that they were just trying to be cool.
Man I wish. I've been here legally for 19 years and they still won't give me my citizenship. About a decade ago my grandfather said fuck it and moved to Spain where he and his wife got citizenship in like two years.I'm an American but I always assumed it was very easy to get citizenship in America compared to other countries. It's especially awkward when my friends say it. I dunno what to say to them when they od this
This is a pretty good point, Wilsonian self-determination didn't exactly bust up the U.S. like it carved up the rest of the globe.I wouldn't say that Europeans are more racist. What I would say is that anglosphere countries like America, The UK, Canada and NZ have a civic conception of nationhood and not an ethnic conception of nationhood.
It's obviously not an absolute statement and elements of both exist within all cultures but in most Anglosphere countries, the civic conception wins out. If someone comes to an anglosphere country and accepts their values they will be accepted as a member of that society. It's probably why America, Canada, The UK, NZ and Australia have been so successful with migration populations.
The civic conception of nationhood really is something unique to the Anglosphere. It's not something that I've really seen in other cultures.
