Why are the Call of Duty developers so afraid to transfer to a new graphics engine?

When you pick up Black Ops: Cold War after playing Modern Warfare 2019 it becomes painfully obvious how outdated the Call of Duty graphics engine (based on the ID Tech 3 engine) has really become and how great of a of a job Infinity Ward did at revitalizing the engine last year.

But regardless of that, with new (FREE) engines such as Unreal Engine 5 coming out that can handle photo realism on a much greater scale than CoD's engine there really is no excuse.

Why do you think the CoD devs haven't embraced a full blown change? It seems like it would certainly be possible with their typical three year development cycle.

I thought Call of Duty Cold War was a really impressive game graphically from what I've seen I haven't played it

No gaming engine is only a graphics engine.

You have everything in there:
Audio systems
Input systems
Networking
Graphics
Physics
File systems
Encryption
And a dozen other parts

Changing engines doesn't mean changing only the graphics part.
Changing engines means having to re-learn ALL of these parts.
Some things can be ported between engines, most things can't.
A team well-versed in engine A doesn't mean the same team will work just as well with engine B (see BioWare & Anthem...).

It is a VERY serious investment of time and effort and therefore money.

I didn't like it but Modern Warfare is one of the most beautiful games from last gen and a huge leap forward for their tech.

CS 1.6 is fine.
Same as CS GO.
Dota also.

If it's strictly a MP game and the game is fun, people don't give THAT much crap about graphics if they are already addicted, which 15-20M yearly sales depicts they are.

MP in the same engine standalone game
SP standalone game in new engine which is not gonna happen should be the way for them.

Exactly. Bobby Kotick is a bit skint these days. We cant expect him to fork out on adjustments.
It's way more than an adjustment.

That doesn't mean CoD publisher wouldn't have the money for that - of course they would.

But the argument was that there was "no excuse" for not switching engines.
The truth is that there is a very good excuse - especially if all you care about is profit.
