Recently, I've been on another Resident Evil craze, this tends to happen to me once or twice a year where I feel this absolute urge to play Resident Evil games. I played and beat 5 in co-op a couple of days ago and loved it and I'm currently reinstalling RE 1, 2 and 3 for PC, as well as 6 and Revelations 2 in-case I ever get the chance to play these properly.
Anyway, this has been on my mind for a number of years now, but it's strikingly odd that we haven't seen a "remaster" or re-release of the trilogy of RE 1 - 3, and Silent Hill 2 - 4 on Steam now. With remasters and classic revivals being hot shit right now, and Capcom wanting to sell more RE units, why aren't these games on Steam now? Yeah, the classic RE games are available digitally on the PSN, so that furthers my case: why aren't they on Steam?
I mean, look:
- RE 1 - 3 and SH 2 - 4 already have PC ports
- RE and SH are very popular franchises, there will be a high number of guaranteed sales
- Survival horror is still a popular genre right now, this is a good time to make money on games you've already released
- It's next to making free money; just hand the ports over to a competent team to "remaster" them for current use - or hell - emulate them like how FFIX is
- Capcom are remaking RE2, they could re-release the original RE2 to help fund it?
- Silent Hill is, probably, a dead franchise now. Revive it by re-release the games we all love
- PC games are no longer "zomg teh pirates wunt pay dood"; REmake and 0 HD have sold extremely well
I'm fully aware the PC ports of these six games aren't exactly the best, being many years old, and have problems running on modern OS. However, it's nothing a talented team can't do to make them compatible with mods or even reverse engineering. For example, RE2 on PC won't optimally run unless you have the disk inside the disk drive (as far as I know anyway since I beat RE2 on PC for the first time last year on PC and I needed the disk for it to run properly), and SH4's PC port is missing environment lighting.
I also made a thread a few months back asking where a HD remaster for Outbreak is, it really seems Capcom won't release their classic RE games anymore, although I think their is HUGE potential for profit margins.
