Why aren't the classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill games on Steam at this point?

Recently, I've been on another Resident Evil craze, this tends to happen to me once or twice a year where I feel this absolute urge to play Resident Evil games. I played and beat 5 in co-op a couple of days ago and loved it and I'm currently reinstalling RE 1, 2 and 3 for PC, as well as 6 and Revelations 2 in-case I ever get the chance to play these properly.

Anyway, this has been on my mind for a number of years now, but it's strikingly odd that we haven't seen a "remaster" or re-release of the trilogy of RE 1 - 3, and Silent Hill 2 - 4 on Steam now. With remasters and classic revivals being hot shit right now, and Capcom wanting to sell more RE units, why aren't these games on Steam now? Yeah, the classic RE games are available digitally on the PSN, so that furthers my case: why aren't they on Steam?

I mean, look:
  • RE 1 - 3 and SH 2 - 4 already have PC ports
  • RE and SH are very popular franchises, there will be a high number of guaranteed sales
  • Survival horror is still a popular genre right now, this is a good time to make money on games you've already released
  • It's next to making free money; just hand the ports over to a competent team to "remaster" them for current use - or hell - emulate them like how FFIX is
  • Capcom are remaking RE2, they could re-release the original RE2 to help fund it?
  • Silent Hill is, probably, a dead franchise now. Revive it by re-release the games we all love
  • PC games are no longer "zomg teh pirates wunt pay dood"; REmake and 0 HD have sold extremely well

I'm fully aware the PC ports of these six games aren't exactly the best, being many years old, and have problems running on modern OS. However, it's nothing a talented team can't do to make them compatible with mods or even reverse engineering. For example, RE2 on PC won't optimally run unless you have the disk inside the disk drive (as far as I know anyway since I beat RE2 on PC for the first time last year on PC and I needed the disk for it to run properly), and SH4's PC port is missing environment lighting.

I also made a thread a few months back asking where a HD remaster for Outbreak is, it really seems Capcom won't release their classic RE games anymore, although I think their is HUGE potential for profit margins.

Silent Hill because Konami.

RE is a bit more puzzling but seeing as they're remaking 2 and already have REmake and 0 on Steam, my guess is that Capcom would rather just release more modern games.

Because Steam is not a pachinko machine.

Konami goes where the money is. Thing is, ROI on digital releases of these games would be in the millions of percent by this point, unless there are some unknown technical or contractual issues that aren't public knowledge. I guess they might be looking at ROCE or something and seeing a relatively small number (in comparison to casinos and health clubs anyway) which would explain the lack of interest.

To be honest, I'm glad Silent Hill isn't on there. I'd hate to see Konami make any more money. Especially off the Silent Hill IP in particular.

Resident Evil because fuck Konami

Silent Hill because we failed Capcom's test

yes I'm sorry, it was low hanging fruit with the two series mentioned. 😂

Thing is, I would buy both and I'm sure I can't be alone.
If anything I'm more likely to buy the original then the remake. I know what I'm getting with RE2 so it's an easy decision. I still don't know what form REmake 2 will take.

I'd buy all of these classics if made available again. A RE classic trilogy set with RE1-3 would be perfect.

Because Konami hate their legacy titles. Jim Sterling had a source on this where the management or something disregard previous achievements of developers

SH because of Konami. Ports are old yes, but with a bit of work you can put them on Steam or GoG for sale, as the fan-patches prove. But you actually need to give a fuck, which Konami doesn't.

RE, well, Capcom is doing its best I think. It took them years but they cared enough to make a decent RE4 port after that horrible thing from 2006. We got REmake and RE0 remasters as well, they did a magnificent work with Dragon's Dogma...at least that shows us that they care and they try.

Thanks for reminding me how poorly managed the Silent Hill franchise is.

Also, as someone whose favorite series are exactly Half-Life and Silent Hill, the modern gaming climate is depressing as fuck.

I really do wish that Capcom would at least put the original versions of Resident Evil 1-3 + any version of Code Veronica on Steam.

It would be nice to have them all in one place.

Include the Metal Gear Solid games. Most of them have PC ports too.

MGSV (both Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain) are already on Steam. MGS1 and 2 have some pretty problematic PC ports which will require some tuning to become usable at all. 3 and 4 will have to be ported first.

Our hate towards Konami shouldn't be at the expense of people being able to play seminal classics like Silent Hill 1-3

Do the Resident Evil ports even work on modern operating systems?

They do, but from my memory RE2 needs the disk in the tray for it to run properly. 3 works best as it uses a modern installer, never tried 1 but I've seen it played in Windows 10.

The newer Japanese ports run great and have fan translations. That would be the ports they need to port to steam.

I've never tried the Sourcenext port but looking it up just now, apparently it works perfectly right out the box so to say. Uncompressed FMVs and higher resolution backgrounds with the most content AND works on Windows XP/7/8.1/10? The only problem is it's not in English and I doubt Capcom will ever translate it at this point and won't use that fan partial translation.

You could trick Konami into it, by releasing a Pachinko machine that runs on Windows and requires it's games to use the Steam API.

If i remember correctly the Silent Hill 2-3-4 PC ports were pretty broken even back then and/or straight up don't run on current hardware. More importantly, it's Konami.

As for RE, the first game's already on Steam in remastered form and IMHO that's the proper way most people should play it nowadays.

The other games, I dunno. There's the age-old rumor that Capcom's supposedly was working on some kind of RE2 remaster/HD-ification. On the other hand, RE7 came out and even though it's a numbered entry, it kinda reboots the franchise, so I wonder if they even want to revisit the old arc.

I would imagine they don't care about revisiting old games because Resident Evil 4-6 came out, not to mention a very recent port of PS2's CVX, and revelations port still coming. I'm sure they don't want to spend the resources.

If RE1 is hard to run at all, and RE2 (sourcenext) doesn't have an English translation, they aren't going to spend a penny to update them. The PSone to PS3 are just ISO dumps, and probably needed minimal adjustment.

My hope and dream is that backbone entertainment does a Resident Evil legacy collection.

Capcom have a history of not putting their games on the right platform and Konami have a history of being fucking idiots. They both suck ass.

I don't think that capcom is that inept...I mean we have Disney afternoon games on current consoles.

I think the difficulty is Resident Evil 1-3 have pre rendered backgrounds. They never got ported to ps2 or xbox360 which would make their port to current consoles easy. I guess you couldn't really make them HD. Resident Evil's backgrounds are 240x360. 2 and 3 are 480x640. How do you work with those assets, or do you just keep the 3d models at 480x640?

Silent Hill would be really easy because all their assets are 3d and they could easily be made ps2 to PS4 games, but Konami is really inept after Hideo Kojima has left.

As much as i love Silent hills,i'm not going to give Konami another cent and knowing them we will need a 1080ti to run SH2.
We already have REmake,REmake 2 is in the works and i'm fairly optimistic that REmake 3 will happen too, so i don't think it's worth the time imo.

That's not a good reason on why fans & newcomers shouldn't experience these classics on the PC. It would also be far more accessible & cheaper than grabbing a physical retail copy from an online retailer for a potentially high price.

Two of their biggest IPs (Monster Hunter, Ace Attorney) are only available to a small amount of gamers. They refuse to put them on other platforms despite the demand being there and porting being relatively cheap. On top of that you have Dead Rising 4 Windows 10 disaster/skipping PS4, Street Fighter 5 skipping Xbox, Dragons Dogma re-release skipping PS4/XB1, BoF6 skipping everything and becoming MOBILE LOL, Mega Man skipping out on life ready to kill himself. That's just recent stuff off the top of my head.

They are absolute morons.

edit: oh and RE Umbrella Corps even existing really backs up my line above^^ That money spent could have been used to port games that are actually going to sell to platforms where they make sense.

I recall some Capcom community manager posting on their forums saying that they've been trying to put the original RE1-3 on Steam for a long time, but Capcom Japan won't allow them to.
