Why do Gamers have such a boner for SkillUp (and others like angry Joe)?

Don’t get me wrong, he seems like a reasonable fella and I even watch his reviews sometimes, but Gamers on Reddit and the like have been slobbering over this guy ever since his Last of Us 2 review. They await his word as if it’s gospel, and not just some random guy on the internet. The most annoying part is people who will be arguing online and post one of his videos in substitution of their own opinion. So people who haven’t even played a game will regurgitate whatever he said. Why can’t people make their own opinions?

He’s a lot better than Angry Joe, I will admit. I can’t believe people unironically say shit like “I’m waiting to see what Angry Joe thinks” lmao

I personally don’t watch AngryJoe anymore but I do value SkillUp when on the fence about purchasing a game. He’s detailed, has a generally good sense of game design and what makes certain games enjoyable while also relating game stories, mechanics etc. to other similar games for good reference. He takes his time, explains his opinions and is more thorough than your typical 6-8 minute IGN review.

people like things. maybe they like things you don't like. this is not an issue unless you are a snob.

the worst thing about snobbery is dehumanization. you can't just allow people to say "I like this Angry Joe" video, you have to characterize them as sex-crazed ("boner?") and "slobbering" freaks. get the fuck over yourself. watching a youtube video does not make you a drooling neanderthal. lol. seriously.

nothing wrong with Angry Joe. why do people listen to Youtubers talk about video games? Angry Joe talks about games. SkillUp talks about games. you aren't even talking about games here, you are doing some content policing or something.

you are complaining on a video game message board about people on ANOTHER video game message board talking about videogame reviewers? why does this upset you? perhaps you are the problem here.

I don't care about SkillUp nor Pissed Pedro.

The last one is insufferable for me. Just overreactions one after another.

I never heard of Skillup till people on GAF started simping for him because of this exact reason. Not really familiar with his other content though. Seems ok at a glance. And even Skillup was pissed that his TLOU2 review was being used by dumb-asses against the game.

But to answer your question, people like them because they validate their preconceived opinions.

Because both are entertaining and very detailed with their reviews. Joe is never afraid to call out the BS in games and I can respect that. Skill is more level headed and detailed but Joe is more entertaining to watch.

Obviously, a picture from "Skillup" would have helped.

But if you are so keen on sharing picture of your thing, then go ahead, knock yourself out.
Well, you seem like a nice lad, so I'll do as you ask.

Been watching Angry Joe for years, back when he used to be a slim fella :messenger_grinning_sweat: His videos are generally entertaining still, even watch some of his movie stuff from time to time

Never heard of SkillUp.

Que diablos? SkillUp is an actual good reviewer. Angry Joe OTOH, is overly-long, parrots what everyone else has already said, unfunny, and comes across as a grifter. But as to your question, you kind of already answered it yourself🤷🏿‍♂️

Angry Joe has been shit for like for 2+ years now. Skill Up reviews are good, but sometimes can be a bit too harsh.

What would be your recommendations when it comes to YouTube channels?

For serious or in-depth reviews, I like ACG, MandaloreGaming and GmanLives.

For other kind of stuff, Civvie11 for boomer goodness and SsethTzeentach for... Well, whatever he does.

I don't always agree with him like with his TLOU2 review but he seems like a decent and reasonable guy and I can see where is coming from in his reviews. Angry Joe can be funny at times but I don't take him seriously.

It appears as though you're fishing for a reason to hate him other than his views on that one videogame you like.

This isn't that complicated or difficult to understand. There's a ton of reviewers for videogames, both professional or not. The point is to find a reviewer who values the same things in a game that you think are essential. If that person is consistent in their values/judgements you can then trust them when they give a game a 6.5/10, because you know they consistently care about the same things you do in a game.

People follow skillup, because the things he consistently critisizes like microtransactions and unfinished games, reflect the sentiment a lot of gamers have at this time.

I don't really watch his videos, but we like the same type of games, and it's expensive to form your own opinion.

I usually like his reviews, and mostly share his opinion, but lately he's been having some blunders and straight up wrong facts in some of his reviews. Most notably in his AC Valhalla review he gets fed up for a good 10 minutes about the power lv requirements and how he "can't advance the story for the last order member" yet he didn't take a second to just return order member medallions to Haytam which leads to the quest resolvement.

Skill Up is well-liked because he's a thorough reviewer and gives his honest thoughts. He also typically deviates from the larger publications like GameSpot and IGN, which adds to his perceived integrity to his fans.

I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 and I don't know who the fuck either of those fart nuggets are.

So I think your analysis might be skewed

probably 2 random punks who get paid to play minigames like minicrap, fortnap and among ass all day long for the amusement of millions of lowlife and are thus seen as highly respected "game specialists"

People are always seeking for others to reinforce their views, or have something to defend their shared-belief group with. So with TLOU2 it was a classic example, because now they had a review to beat others over the head with 'see, I'm justified in hating this game because this review agrees with me and it's from a popular channel and got lots of views'. It's as if their own opinion to themselves is worthless. It's not enough to come to your own conclusion about a game, you HAVE to seek out others that believe the same so that you feel justified in believing it. And that applies to any game (and indeed even other things), tlou2 is just an example.

Me, I used to read a lot of game magazines when I was a kid but hanging around their forum and growing up a bit into my early teens I realised these were just some other assholes' opinions and I stopped paying attention to them altogether. Similar thing happened with literary criticism, movie reviews etc. over time. End of the day I can think for myself.

He's a pretty good reviewer- thorough and explains his thoughts well. I dont' worship him but I get why people like him.

I feel that moreso with SkillUp than AngryJoe his "I Did Not Enjoy This At All" review of TLOU 2 largely appealed to an audience that was seeking validation. This turning point has certainly garnered him almost unconditional trust from gamers.

The same has sort of happened with AngryJoe. But, in his case he's been doing the "Epic Fail" shtick for years now which lets gamers know he doesn't cookie-cutter his opinion. Lots of people get behind that.

In the case with AngryJoe i do agree he tends to overreact a bit. As for SkillUp, I've tried watching his reviews but i can't seem to get into then. One youtuber i fully support is ACG though.

Hell yeah! I love Sseth. Just last night I was watching a couple of his vids and had to keep rewatching parts 'cause they made me bust up laughing. Also got turned onto others like InternetHistorian guy and a few others.

I'm not keen on most Youtube "influencers" since often times they seem like fakes to get where they are, such as Angry Joe being a stupid prick all those years ago to the Dorito Pope just to try and Larp being some angry "gamer" journo. The Laymen dudes and SkillUp also never got my support for their constant hot takes that felt like they try to do the opposite of whatever the popular media opinion is. I also greatly dislike most of them for hopping on board internet rage trains over the years. He guys, -insert random nerdtuber name here- here! Smash that like, sub and bell icon to get notified of my dead horse beat 'em ups over the same shit we've all heard from every other outlet about scummy industry practices that you should be outraged about.

Angry Joe fawning over Occasional Cortex(AOC for the uninitiated) and SkillUp saying on twitter some crap about people not voting for the wonder of Socialism that is Bernie Sanders being a piece of poo also turned me off. Ooooh so edgy. One of the quickest ways of getting me to tune out is to start throwing around poilitical commentary regardless of side or views. Even other channels I used to love to frequent I now rarely visit because the quality of material has decreased significantly, with most "jokes" being the usual echo chamber fodder. There are others I follow who often get early copies of niche genres I enjoy, with some making trying to make a career out of it, but even them I don't rely on others opinion on something. I'm just looking for footage and hearing somebody else's reasons for liking or disliking something.

I especially dislike reaction vids and such since they are generally super f'ing fake. I love people just passionately talking about games for fun and nostalgia. I can see why others would put stock in larger channels' opinions since few buy as many games as us hardcore gamers, and people tend to find others whose opinion matches their own. I learned quite young not to trust publications reviews and it has carried over to youtubers as well. Only guy who does this full time(from what I gather) and is still trustworthy despite my tastes being different would be ACG. Nothing wrong with people liking somebody else though. I do think there is a sort of personality cult around celebs with ecelebs not being to different, and for some people the hobby isn't so much gaming as it is justifying their spending habits through popular opinion. It seems like many just want games and companies to fail with immediate knee-jerk reactions despite knowing full well this isn't plug-n-play Kansas anymore Toto. Cyberpunk, Witcher 3 launch, Hello Game's Sean Murray and NMS, Battlefront 2 and ME: Shadow of War plus others with the Lootbox outrage, Anthem, Destiny 2, Schreier and that heavyset bloke going on about the suffrage of the proletariat.

Fortunately though its not hard to ignore and people have the right to enjoy what they want. Live and let live I say.

I’m old so the only Youtuber I have a boner for is Azzyland ...am I a bad parent for allowing my daughter to put her up on the big screen so I can marvel at her fabulous rack, accent, and naturally tanned skin?

It's weird seeing Skillup being known as some big game review channel, I subbed to him when he was a The Division builds and content creator. The guy pivoted when TD2 released and wasn't good, good on him I guess.
