I overheard a conversation to today, with two young guys who talked about their diets and dieting. And it got me wondering.

why do normal MEN without special medical conditions DIET?

Im not talking normal limitations like not eating 1 kg of candy each day or not stuffing your face with pizza for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Im talking about diets. Like eating less, eating low carb, low fat low this low that.

It truly is a completely moronic concept for 99% of men.

Almost irregardless of what it consists of it makes you miserable. It does not make you look good when you are done nor does it really make you feel good when you are doing it. It does not work, and if it does you have suffered for months and months of pure fucking agony. Constantly hungry and eating things that taste like shite. Thinking about food all the time. Like a junkie with abstinence.

And the end result is most of the time slim fatty.

Its fucking crap and is retarded through and through.

Going to the gym 3 times a week, 1 hour at the time and lifting heavy shit and constantly upping the weights is 100 times more effective. It makes you slimmer, it makes you stronger, you can eat within normal boundaries. You dont have to go hungry. You constantly see positive result, either your weights go up, your waist go down and in the long run your muscle show.

You are doing things instead of focusing on things not to do, like food abstinence.

I wish someone would have told me this 15 years ago. Dieting is stupid.

Maybe it works for them and you should applaud people trying to live a healthier life.

There is so much wrong in your post it's mindboggling. At best exercise is 25% of weight loss. Your diet is faaaar more important in that regard. If you're talking about toning, then yeah, but no one diets to get toned.

Diet isn't just about losing weight, it's about feeling better because you are eating better, or it's about improving the results of the exercise or sport you do.

I'd imagine some men don't want big muscles and would rather be slim than buff. And you're implying that they aren't working out, something which you don't know. You can work out and go on diets.

Oh and in regards to losing weight, one's diet is infinitely more important than working out.

Dieting as a quick fix or temporary solution will always fail--so diets in and of themselves are stupid for any sex.

I'm more into changing lifestyle choices; it's more sustainable in the long run.

What the fuck am I reading... looooool

Looks like OP has the idiotic concept of "starving yourself to death" = dieting.

There are diets that you have to eat 3800+ calories per day, if not more......

Weight loss is more about your diet than your exercise.

It's better to have a moderately healthy diet than going through dieting phases, but dieting from time to time to accelerate a goal isn't bad in of itself.

Even people who lift go on diets, they call it "cutting". Sorry that you find it so repulsive.

Even if you exercise regularly you still need to moderate your intake of calories and carbs in order to maintain a healthy weight/diet.

Duh.

I've lost about 25 lbs this year from dieting. I'm quite happy. I don't want to try and convert all my fat to muscles. I just don't want to slim down significantly this year.

Because maybe some people have unhealthy habits outside of eating pizza for every meal.

I know I do. The perfect way for me to get into better shape is to cut down on the crap I eat and 3-5 hours exercise per week. I know this because I've done it.

"Dieting, the deliberate selection of food to control body weight or nutrient intake" now have a look at the first part

OP, you've said a lot of dumb things. You might want to stop using the computer like a woman, and get back to hunting and gathering.

I'm getting ready to do one in a few weeks (after we move), but it's not a diet in the typical sense of "OMG I'm fat and need to lose weight", but more to reset my metabolism. I have an auto-immune disease, and this was suggested to me as a way to help me get my energy levels back up to those close to a normal person.

The answer is that not everybody has that kind of drive. Going to the gym even just three times a week and spending an hour doing exercise isn't a trivial thing for everybody. Mind you, I understand that if you prioritize it, most everyone can probably find the time to do it. But many adults with demanding jobs and/or families aren't just sitting around with empty spaces on their schedule wondering "what can I do here besides sit around and do nothing? I guess I could go to the gym, but that really cuts into my 'laying about doing nothing' time." Getting into a workout rhythm can be difficult, particularly when one is out of shape.

The appeal of the diet is that it doesn't require a time commitment, and often, many people can probably recognize that their diet is dubious to begin with. So, that'll seem like a good place to start. I can agree with your assessment that crazy dieting alone shouldn't be the first choice if one isn't eating all that badly to begin with. But anytime I sit down and decide I need to diet, I don't exactly have to consult some food journal I've meticulously kept to identify why I may have put on a few pounds as of late.
