Why do some games get a 'pass' with certain themes (nudity, sex) from some outlets? Are East/West treated differently?

So there seems to be several scenes with exposed breasts, skinny dipping scene, sex noises, sexual intercourse of a 16 year olds in a game called Life Is Strange 2 and western game journalists seems to like it a lot.

Here is the sex scene of a 16 year olds. but don't worry guys, it's okay since it's a western game and the characters looks like real naked underage minors:messenger_winking:

you do know it is legal for 16 years to have sex here, right? in some other european countries it is 15.

also, they aren't showing straight up nudity or sex scenes.

Where's the problem? 16 is a legal age of consent in most countries.
16-18 in the USA, depending on where exactly.

As long as they don't show anything straight pornographic, I don't think there's a problem here.
It's not like the same isn't "depicted" in various TV series... It is an important topic to teens, so a series about teens going there just makes sense.

In Europe 15 even is legal outside of tutor-student relationship which is illegal.
That's not entirely true. The age of consent in most European countries is 14-16, depending on the country. There is no intention to persecute anyone at a few years younger if both are that age, though.
But as you said, the exception are relationships of trust like tutor-student, etc.

Sorry, man, but if you wanted some anti-journo cool points with this thread, there are many way more fruitful topics ;)

I think the OP is not arguing against the depiction itself, but trying to draw a juxtaposition between this and the coverage of Japanese games with similar imagery and themes. The counter-argument would be that one is "tasteful" and the other "tasteless" but arguing taste across cultural, linguistic, geographic lines is, ironically in itself, a tasteless act by western, multi-cultural standards, no?

I have to admit that I'm arguing in somewhat bad faith. I have a taste for tastelessness.

this is nowhere near as bad as a lot of japanese games. they are straight up sexualising underage girls but "it's ok! they're over 18...believe us!" are you saying that this isn't as bad? or these characters who are ~16 years old in high school?

Nothing is bad in the sense that I think you mean. Murder, maybe. Definitely not cartoons.

Prove to me that's underage. Oh wait you can't because it's just a made up character. People like you are the reason why women in western games all look like 35 year old lesbians now. Oh and congrats on posting pics of a game where the characters are wearing bikinis in high school. I thought we were talking about sex and not underage people wearing swimsuits at the beach like you know normal people.

Oh no, a teenage girl in a bikini is a lot worse than literally sexual intercourse lol

1. Legal age in France, where this is from, is 15.
2. It is non explicit and does not sexualise the characters for the viewer.
3. It is not unrealistic for 16 year olds to have sex.

Still not legal to record or portray anyone under the age of 18 having sex with nudity in games dude.

in the persona game they are between 15-18.

in dead or alive they are 18.

well yeah women are gonna look like woman...there are plenty of western games with younger girls. the last of us, horizon, LIFE IS STRANGE, to name a few off the top of my head.

my point is that OP and yourself seem to think a little bit of nudity shown in Life is strange is worses than the way japanese games sexualise females regardless of game.

the sexual intercourse is not shown. it's implied. totally different. you should learn the difference.

Oh you're one of those people. I'll make sure to let all women irl know that wearing a bikini is sexualizing themselves and how wrong it is. Goodbye.

That's fine though. It's a western game. They can do whatever they want. Japan can't though. Japan bad. Underage girls with gauges, retarded hair, tattoos, and fucking is good.

And of course ones again THANKS GOD I am not in a specific other Forum.

I really hope there would be a more bright future of how freely videogames can express a vision of a director/artist/etc without any kind of problem.

What I am trying to say is that isn't bad people exploring some new Boundaries if they are fictional.

While I don't think there's a whole hell of a lot of difference between a 16 year old and an 18 year old, as a homosexual who grew up in the 90s I still follow the Mike Pence rule concerning underage kids.

I am pretty sure this game is legal in France. Telling a story, even in movie / games that involves underage persons having intercouse is fine. Making a porn movie with them is a different thing, but this is hardly porn. Don't be a prude.

OP, unfortunately it needs to be spelled out for a lot of people here. The problem isn't with the sex in a game, it's the double standard that gaming writers are showing.

I think this is deliberate by most people. OP, PM a mod for a title change maybe. No-one has a problem with the scene - it's with the double standards as you say. However, I do feel the metro is often quite decent and this point of view fits in with what I see of their general coverage (though I'm no expert on their backdated content). You'd either need to provide the same source with a contrary article or use a different source to evidence the claim (e.g. Kotaku/Polygon/Waypoint).

Yeah, i thought i made it pretty clear but i guess some people just can't understand western journalists hypocrisy, we even have someone here argue that showing nipples of a teenage girl is less bad than showing a teenage girl in a bikini.

Ugh must we be so petty and sarcastic over every contradiction that games journalism produces? It's still individuals writing even if some banded together in a scary hive mind state. If OP has a point to make about double standards then make it instead of acting like children "but but but he did it too" all pointing fingers. Sarcasm gets you a grin from people who get it, it's seldomly productive or taken seriously.

Europe? Strange that you would use that a catch-all term really. Most countries in Europe age of consent it’s 17-18, Spain was 12 at one point, but that’s been increased. Nowhere have I seen it’s 16.

I don’t really get why they’re praising this one while demonising Japanese lolis. Seems a little hypocritical. This kind of thing isn’t really my jam though, so I’m speaking purely as an outsider looking in

Depends on the country, actually.

I was expecting those horrible lolis when I clicked on the links, but those are actually kinda ok to me. Have you ever seen how 20+ Japanese girls look?

I don’t really get why they’re praising this one while demonising Japanese lolis
Actually lolis are kinda looking like they're 12, even when they come out with the usual "YOU DON'T GET IT SHE'S ACTUALLY A MOON FOX GOODESS OVER 9000 YEARS OLD!!!1!" bullshit. And they're fucking disgusting to me and sometimes a plague on games I enjoy.

By the way, I don't see any nudity in the video posted above. What the fuck is the problem?

Wait, aren't you the guy who made this very successful anti-censorship topic? You mounted a vocal defense of fanservice in that topic, so consider me surprised seeing you feign outrage about a nipple-flash in a video game.

First of all, it is not uncommon for teenagers to have sex. It's really not surprising to see a game, that is aimed at this particular demographic, tap into these experiences and portray these situations in a tactful manner. Yes, intercourse is implied, but it is not explicitly shown, so I really don't see the problem here.

Secondly, you're always complaining that american game journalism is imposing its cultural values on Japanese developers. Then why are you unable to acknowledge that this game was developed in France? As you should be aware, we Europeans are rather open-minded about nudity. It's not uncommon to see women of all ages walk around topless on our beaches for example. So excuse me for being a little bit incredulous when you're complaining about the depiction of a frikkin' nipple. Or are you, perhaps, imposing your own cultural values upon a European developer?

Aren't teenagers allowed to enjoy a creative product that is relevant to their own experiences? Such things have been depicted in movies for a long time now (American Pie, Kids, Wetlands, The Diary of a Teenage Girl). Even a lot of classical literature is about such themes (Homo Faber, Lolita, The Reader). I really don't see why a video game isn't allowed to do the same. Your whole hyperbolic accusations of pedophilia are quite frankly ridiculous and certainly does not help your case. If you want to enjoy your 300 year old Japanese dragon lolis, that's fine, whatever floats your boat, man. But don't be turning into Tipper Gore the moment you see an innocuous nipple!

If you want to expose the double standard in western games journalism, that's fine too. But the way how this topic and this discussion are framed is certainly the wrong way to go about things. Feigning moral outrage about the depiction of romantic teenage relations is just as culturally bone-headed and creatively small-minded as american game journalists drumming up outrage about sexy Japanese games.

so it's OK to be showing off under 18s in bikinis and having male characters stare at their boobs? tell me how that ain't sexualising them.... and yes i know that asian woman look young but again these characters range between 15 and 18 years old. it's disgusting.

Pedo's are going to pedo and they're going to try to make it appear as natural and normal as possible to gain traction and a defensible victim position. This is all spear headed by the extreme left, this is Era type people, the same kind of people who were exposed here when this place blew up.

When the girls look like 12, then yes it's pedo.
yes, i'm not arguing that. as you see my other posts i am criticising how young these characters are and how they are being sexualised.

my problem is that people are just ready to call someone a pedo for defending Life is Strange which showed no full nudity or sexual intercourse. yes sex is implied but not shown. it's no secret that 16 year olds have sex in real life which the game is portraying through art. the pedos here are the ones defending these japanese games because "it's fiction!" "it's cartoons!" "you can't prove their age!".

Why are there sex scenes with nudity in game of thrones but porn isn't on HBO?

Because people aren't stupid and they can tell the difference between purely smutty stuff and a scene within something else.

Because one is sex among teenagers, while the other one is sex with little girls. If you don't see the difference, you might need help.

Bruh.

Denmark 15.
Finland 16.
Iceland 15.
Norway 16.
Sweden 15.

And that's only the Nordic countries.
It's actually harder to find a country where the age of consent is 17 or over in Europe than it is to find a country where it is 16, 15 or hell even 14.
